Hello- Would it be possible to have a separate "auctions" section?...apart from pin trading. Also, could everyone put the end date and time in their title? I think that would make it easier to keep track of every auction. Thanks- Jason
 
An Auction Section would be Awesome. I am waiting to see if one will be made before putting any of my own auctions up as I have quite a few really nice pins to be put up for auction and I want people to be able to see them.

Just remember, per DPF rules, that auctions for $ are not allowed. But auctions based on trades are allowed (and very popular)!
 
I vote for a separate auction section too! I know they can be fun, espcially if it's something you want to bid on, but it is cluttering up the trading forum.

Thanks to the Admin if this can be done!
 
I think that would be a great idea as well. Also, is there a way to "standardize" some of the rules for the auctions. One thing I noticed is some people want all bids posted in the thread, and I have seen a couple have them PM the bids, so there is no way to know what has been offered already. I mean, sure on E-Bay bidding is private, but you at least know the amount you are committing as the other amounts are shown.

Also, if you do a auction, does that mean the auctioneer is committed to making a trade of some sort, or can they not trade on the grounds the pin did not meet a "reserve level"
 
The thought was to put a title tag "auction" like there is for trade and wanted. I think maybe it should be a sub forum on the trade area, with a set list of rules/suggestions like we have for PIF...

rules for most auctions so far:
  • Most of them like bidding on the thread.
  • Day and time auction ends is listed in the OP.
  • Most will only commit to the trade if at least 3 bids have been made. Gotta have a choice right? This makes sense, what if only 1 person bids an OE pin for your DA LE 100? can't have that!!!
  • Title change when announcing winner to close thread and alert bidders.

some auction occurances that just don't seem work in my humble opinion:
  • changing rules.
  • Not listing exact time of auction ending.
  • A "reserve", usually not listed, what is the reserve amount? a number of pins, or LE sizes match? what does that mean?
  • Bidder saying they reserve a bid spot and not listing a bid what is that? I think it confuses people.
  • Having an "instant accept" just doesn't work unless you state a specific pin as the instant winner.



So, make an auction format, require in the OP:
  • PP# or #'s
  • Description
  • Auction end date/time
  • special requests like "only pins from my wants list."

Goofy's formt for auction is very well thought out and should be a templat?
 
I agree. If you're going to be putting a pin/pins up for auction, then you're accepting the risk that you may not get what you want for it. There needs to be an end date and time and no reserves. Also, if you're doing an auction for more than 3 days, realize that you probably won't get much activity until the final day...probably not until the final few hours. So don't panic and remove the item. There are many people on the forum who are following these auctions. If you put up a desirable pin, you're going to get desirable bids. It will not go by unseen.
 
Also, Goofy's auctions are working so well because they are only 1-3 days and there's no comments to try to change bids, such as "this pin just sold for this amount on the bay" or "I have that pin can you offer another" or " could you offer 1 of these instead" or the constant updating of the "top 3 leaders" to create a bidding war.

wow..i can see the drama now when ppl dont get the trade or money they want or the pin is late.. or even worce what if a shark gets hurt.lol... just kiding about the last part... the other things are true.. lets not turn into the Evilbay of fourms. even with no money actions there could b sum trouble... .. lets keep it nice and fun around here

no, no, no...I've been talking about trade "auctions"...I hope everyone doesn't think I'm talking about auctions like ebay

While it is disappointing to those making the offers, I agree with this. Ultimately, it is a trade and people are making trade offers, and I don't believe people should feel forced to make a trade they don't like. Just like we can't "force" people to make trader offers on the auction, we shouldn't "force" the original poster to make a trade he/she is not comfortable with.

Just my thoughts...

It would be a shame if there were someone that would try to spoil the fun by offering one or two lanyard pins for an LE 100 or a very rare or expensive pin. I think a reserve or a chance to not accept any bids if they are unacceptable pins at the end should be the trader's (auctioneer's) decision.

I love watching what people offer for some of these pins when I don't have anything to offer. Let's start a new sub-forum!
 
Also i don't think auctions should be able to close early . . . there have been a few i have wanted to "bid on" but then go and find then and they accepted someones offer before the close date/time.
 
True, the person has the right to have a reserve, but let's be real. There's no way that an auction involving a desireable pin will go unseen, without getting desirable bids on this forum. On eBay, most items put up for auction with a reserve usually never actually meet the reserve because either the lister overvalued the item and/or they wanted it to sell for at least what they've seen it sell for in the past. I just see that happening on here. Once again, as an example, there's no way that an le 100 pin with 5 people trading it and 100 people wanting it only has a bid of a hidden Mickey during an auction lasting 1-3 days.

The problem is "desirable" is in the eye of the beholder. What you or I or the bidder think is desirable may not be for the original poster...
