Dealbreaker? really?

So without mentioning names I had a trade in place for my 2 110th legacy pins for 1 PODM.

Until this person asked about the backer cards. Well when I bought them I did not plan on trading them. So I threw out the backer cards.

Now this person backed out of the trade. Not because of the pins. Because of the backer card.

I understand some of you on here are very very particular but really? I guess it is just me.

I take pride in displaying my pins and keep them in the best shape but just like receipts....I tossed them out.

So I miss out on a trade ( which even though I really want a PODM I love these 2 pins so its probably a good thing)

I am not mad at this person as each person has their own reasons for trading and how they present their pins. I am just venting because I was really excited for a moment.

Thanks for reading!

Backer cards are really important to lots of trades. Especially when the card is unique and not just the basic black kind. I could see both your point and the other persons point.

Don't be too upset. Trades fall through because of cards lots of times.

Meh... I still would have done the deal. When trading, I assume the backer card does NOT come with the pin since most throw it away or lose it. If it happens to come with the pin, then I consider it a plus.

I did the same thing when I started trading, and unfortunately I threw out quite a few backers. It hasn't exactly been a problem, but I still hate that I threw them away. I hope you can get the pin you were trying to trade for. I think most of the people I have traded with didn't really care if the card was there or not. I for one, don't really care either way. For me it's like allenmay8 said, it's kinda like a bonus if it does have the card.

Sometimes, it actually has to do more with displaying then verifying authenticity. For example, in some cases, I couldn't give a crap about the backing cards. But if I had a set going, and the pins had specific art, and I wanted to display them together (in sleeves or whatever) with those cards, then yeah, a card could be a dealbreaker for me.

I said no to a trade once because they didn't have the velvet box it came in...it was an old-looking Tower of Terror pin, and I thought the black jewelry box it came in really added to the feel/look of the pin...so I had to pass.

I keep my cards just in case. I prefer to trade for a pin that has a card but it's not a deal breaker for me. But I can understand people wanting it.

I will raise my hand on this, we had the beginnings of a trade, where they offered me a lot of different pins for a PODM, and I came up with those two if they were on their cards. The reason I mentioned the cards, as I explained, was these are unique cards to the 110th series, not a standard black felt/cardboard backer card. I have done 3 trades this week and not asked about the cards since they were all regular style cards. The reason is a while ago I bought a POH pin (Peter Pan) without it's backer card to be a trader, and wound up having to trade it for a lot less than I paid for it because I did not have that backer card, which was unique to that pin. Since then, if a pin has a unique backer card for it/it's series, like artwork or text about the pin, I strive to make sure I get the card with the pin.

I could never imagine tossing a card for a pin I bought new but I have made trades and bought pins that already did not come with them b/c that person had tossed them.

Unfortunately I have missed out on several trades b/c I had those pins without cards and the person refused to trade without them. It is frustrating but but I can see the reasons as I like cards too. It is very important to a lot of people so please do not ever toss cards! Just put them in bags and set them aside. They don't take up much room!

@Mark - Why WOULD I keep them? Think from my point of view. I am buying pins I like and they are being put into my pin book. I have NO use for the backers. I had NO intention of trading them.

From now on I will be keeping them IN CASE I decide to trade them in the future.

Now I can totally understand where you are coming from if I see it through you point of view but its just not mine. Thanks for the input though! Saving = must do from now on!

@ Everyone.

I totally agree with both sides of this. Each person has their own preference. I respect that. I was just upset about the deal. Now thinking about it I am kinda happy as I get to keep the 2 pins I like and hopefully when I go to WDW in August I will just be able to buy my PODM.

Thanks for the input!

I try to keep the cards now, but I agree, sometimes it looks like the card is more important than the actual pin...which makes no sense to me. I've had people back out of trades several times because I didn't have the original card...even when I offer a similar card (for example a standard dsf card and I offer another standard dsf card)...just because the serial #'s don't match up. Really??? Just my opinion.

They are always worth more or trade better with the backer and the backers don't take up HUGE amounts of space so why not? It avoids problems like these. I bring the backers for the pins I take to the park and people are pleasantly surprised when I have it. Or if they are on the fence I will let them know I have the original backer to try and help push them over their block.

I am sorry for this experience that got you excited and then fizzled.

If I am the first owner of the pin and if I purchase it with the intention to trade, then of course I keep everything like the day I got them. Some older pins I get in trades or on Ebay do not come with their card and if the pin appears to be authentic, I do not care about the card.

About 2-3 months ago I got a really one-sided demand though: The other trader did not have her pin on its card, but insisted that I should have mine on the card. That was annoying to me and I never got back to her to follow up. I can not understand how and why some people feel more entitled than others.

I also keep my backer cards ONLY if they are decorative; if they're the black ones, into the trash they go, unless I bought a pin specifically to trade it away (had a trade set up), I don't know why anyone would *need* the black backer card.

I just had a slightly frustrating trade experience: A trader and I set up a trade. We exchanged mailing info and when I sent my address, I mentioned that my pin was in excellent condition (and it was a decent LE pin with a popular character, not a pin that, as far as I know, was known to possibly be a scrapper) but no backing card (I had gotten the pin in a trade at a PTN). The other trader called off the trade because of it, which I thought that stupid, especially since that trader never specifically *asked* me if the pin was on the card, which the trader should've done (asked me while we were working out the trade) if it mattered to him/her. Well, I'm glad it came out in the e-mail, I would've been really annoyed if that person had gotten the pin and then had a hissy about the card and wanted to send the pins back. Twerp.

It's so tough to make a call about backer cards. As I learned at my 1st trade meeting, some people didn't care for the backers because the pins they wanted from me were going directly into their collection and didn't care for the backer. Some liked my new in package (backer card with bag) better than my open pins.

This brings up my own question: what do you do with mystery box pins? I personally keep the box because I like to see the other pins in the series but would having or not having a box break a deal?

Meh... I still would have done the deal. When trading, I assume the backer card does NOT come with the pin since most throw it away or lose it. If it happens to come with the pin, then I consider it a plus.

This is exactly how I think of it as.
-.-

I keep all of mine, but I think its just a habit! They're all in a box somewhere but I would have no idea which went with which now!
A trade of mine fell through because the pin didn't have its backer - and this was a standard rack pin. Some people want them, others don't.
I think it comes down to preference especially if its a nice/decorative/special card. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

I like to keep all my backer cards on the pins, unless it's a generic card and I'm mounting it for display. I especially like to keep the LE/one of a kind cards, like the Haunted Mansion O-Pin House pins and the HM Piece of History!

I Vote Keep the Backer Card!! Even if you plan to keep it forever you may change your mind.

But I have a Question - Each backer card is unique to each pin ( SKU Number ) How do you keep them straight?

Barbara

hat do you do with mystery box pins? I personally keep the box because I like to see the other pins in the series but would having or not having a box break a deal?

I keep mine, just because older mystery pins (like the lollipops in the tins) have been scrapped. I also keep my traders in their little black baggies to help provide confidence that they are authentic. For myself, I only need to keep one box.

For those that say keeping the backer cards doesn't take up too much space, obviously doesn't have a collection the size of mine. I have a whole "under the bed" type sterilite container full of them. And that's just for the ones with non-basic black cards! And with as much pin stuff I have, that really is too much space. When it was just a shoebox it was fine. The basic black park cards get tossed, unless it's a trader pin, then I keep them. I have kept all the DA and DS.com cards, even for my collection.

This is really helpful for me to read since I am new...just bought my first LE pin and although I don't plan on trading it I will hang on to the card just in case I ever do want to trade it in the future! I appreciated hearing your different opinions on this to help me decide what to do! Sorry your trade fell through though, maybe something better will come along!
