I haven't done much trading for a long while so it's time to get rid of my Disney Auction pins. I am going to add one or two at a time every day or so until they are gone. If you would like a picture of the actual pin please PM your email address and I'll send it to you.

If you would like to make a trade offer on any of the pins I would be open to trading for many of the newer DSSH and PTD pins, especially the upcoming Grand Pin event silhouette pins.

I'll keep a close eye, there are a lot of Lion King ones that I still do not have. :)

What exactly are Disney Auction pins? I tried to do some googling but couldn't find too much that would clear things up. They're no longer made?

It used to be that they made these really nice (overall) very limited edition pins, and they released them through the auction site Disney Auctions. So that's what they were labelled, and have been ever sense. They're generally pretty hard to find and many of them are of a type and quality not seen as often nowadays. Obviously, this doesn't always hold true, but that's the story... :)

Well that's part of it. Disney used to hold Auctions on their site for these pins. So if the pin was LE 100, the top 100 bidders when the bids end get the opportunity to purchase the pin for the lowest winning bidder price. For example if 200 people bid on an LE 100 pin, and the top 99 bidders Bid $500, while the 100th winning bidder bid $50, then top 100 winners pay $50. This was held quite some time ago, the pins usually have amazing quality and are worth quite a lot. Disney Auctions pins have an Auctions gavel as a backing stamp. Some come with the Auctions Hologram, so its nearly impossible to scrap.

Whoa, I didn't know about the bidding part! So there's no way to know how much was actually originally paid for the pin you're trading.. That must've been pretty nerve-wrecking back then when you were after one of the Auctions pins!

Thanks for the explanation! I was wondering why they were called Disney Auctions. Why and when did they stop making them?

Disney stopped doing the auction pins sometime in 2006 I believe. The original DA pins were LE 100 as described above, but they also released a series of what we called BIN (Buy It Now) pins with edition sizes of 250, 500 and 1000. The LE 250 pins usually sold out in about 3 seconds on the day of release so were super popular and impossible to get.

I think the final auction price for each pin is publicly known. If you go to PinPics, I think it lists the prices originally paid for these pins.

For some of the DA LE100 pins, 75 of them were sold in sets (usually 5 or 6 total) but the other 25 of each pin were sold (and bid on) separately...

That's very interesting! So that means that pin Pin 31608 Disney Auctions - Friendship Day (Stitch) will have been one of those auction types, and that it went up to $85 for it back then. But probably not as a set as it is not mentioned? I didn't know that's how it went - so cool!

Ooh, will also be watching! I have a bunch of Auction pins I'm pining away for...

I think the Friendship Day was just a single pin and not sold as a set. As an example, the Stitch Transformation (25107) being sold here was part of a six pin set of transformations (25132). The Stitch pin went for $170 all by itself (25 of them) and the six pin set went for $359.99 (75 of them, along with the other 5 from this set). Hope this helps.

Yes, totally get it now! Very interesting, thanks :) I have owned a few Auctions pins (but traded most) and I never really know how exactly they were sold.
Why did these Auctions pins get retired, though?

It really isn't clear why Disney retired the auction pins, but it is most likely because of them ending their relationship with Ebay and moving to their own E-commerce website. After the end of the Disney auctions and Buy it Now pins Disney moved over to selling a series of low edition pins on Disney Shopping similar to the Jessica pins I have listed. However, the LE 100 pins sadly came to an end.
