Disney Dolls Appreciation Discussion
Well, I did the unexpected and unplanned (again!) After a wonderful sudden desire to watch Alice in Wonderland, I decided to get the 17" LE Alice doll to go with my Queen of Hearts doll. Alice in Wonderland was my absolute favorite Disney film when I was growing up, and I have fantastic memories of going on the Alice in Wonderland dark ride and the Mad Tea Party ride in Disneyland. I developed a lifelong appreciation for petits fours (imagining them to be like the cakes that Alice ate) different flavored teas, as well as a fondness for playing cards. So now, especially for all of you Alice fans out there, may I present you with the so-far un-reviewed Alice doll:

Limited Edition Alice Doll

Like the Limited Edition Queen of Hearts doll, Alice is supposed to be based on the 1951 animated film, but I also see some visual influences that call to mind the recent Tim Burton film as well. Perhaps the single most obvious missing thing is her apron, which would really have related this doll a lot more to the original 1951 character design that we all know and love. However, had they put an apron on her, many details of her dress would have been concealed. This doll is actually much lovelier than the stock photos on the Disney Store website, and I am very pleased with her. Her dress is made of blue satin and blue and white lace. She has a full white petticoat with lace trim at the hemline under her dress as well as a shorter white tulle petticoat to give appropriate volume to the dress. The upper portion of the dress has a row of rhinestone "buttons" down the front, which are the only sparkly accents on her. The style is unmistakeably Victorian, with short puffed sleeves, rounded collar, and bell-shaped skirt. The skirt is made of layers of alternating blue satin and a different shade of blue lace ruffles. I did a little research, and interestingly, the length of her skirt is apparently the appropriate length for a 10-12 year old Victorian girl. Alice has black shoes that try to emulate her Mary Jane shoes with black ribbon attachments around her ankles... not quite the right design, but it's nice that they tried to make it work with the standard existing shoes for these dolls. She also has knee-high white stockings with white lace and blue ribbon bows at the tops. Unfortunately, like with the Queen of Hearts doll, they did not give her pantalettes. I may have to make her some if I ever debox her. Why are doll makers so against including appropriate undergarments?

Alice has the same head mould that was used for Limited Edition Snow White, but the styling of her makeup gives her a different look completely. Where Snow White has a very glamorous aura, Alice looks very much the curious young lady. Her blue eyes are glancing to the side under her rooted eyelashes. Her eyeshadow, lips, and blush are all in a rosy pink. Her lips are also slightly parted, and you can see a hint of her white teeth. Alice's hair is rather long, compared to the animated character's design, and here, they have styled it with a center part and in long ringlets. Like Limited Edition blonde Rapunzel, she has gold metallic strands of hair mixed alongside her regular blonde hair. Her parted bangs are curled separately, almost like wings. Adorning her hair is Alice's signature black ribbon tied in a bow at the top.

The last accessory that Alice has is a white teacup with pink accents held in her left hand. The cup is very angular with a square top, which is a little odd, considering that off the top of my head, I think that all of the cups at the Mad Tea Party in the film are all rounded. It's still cute that they included it, though.

The box is white with gold and blue accent designs, as is the CoA. The side windows of the box are in a keyhole design, exactly like with the Queen of Hearts' box. My Alice doll is #019/500 -- the lowest doll number I own of all the numbered LE dolls I have.

I agree, I'm sure their would be a way to do it but they know the dolls will sell regardless so why make it complicated for themselves - that being said I just hope they've learnt a lesson from the last collection! My biggest gripe (apart from the sheer fiasco of it all!) with the designer series was the complete lack of quality control from Disney. The Rapunzel doll I bought in store from London on 17th October had a big stain on the skirt which I didn't pick up on until we came home - this is whole different story. What surprised me was the excitement of the CM when I took the doll back to my local store in Cardiff - it was like I'd brought in a piece of gold, they all flocked around her! Then you had customers wanting to see what all the fuss was about so they had to take the doll out the back - it was bizarre to say the least and still makes me giggle!

I'm not sure I could survive another designer doll craze!

Oh my gosh, haha! That is funny with the Rapunzel doll... I guess that just shows how coveted the dolls were! I hope you got some sort of extra refund because of the skirt, its not like the dolls are plentiful for exchanges It's a shame about the skirt issue... quality control in terms of dolls does seem to be lacking a little bit recently, like the huge thing about the LE Rapunzel Wedding doll's eyelashes. I still wonder why that happened! Let's hope Disney step it up soon, because unfortunately no matter how bad it gets, I am STILL going to be a sucker for any doll they release!

Shivatopia, that Alice doll is my total grail of all dolls right now, I am SO jealous! I hope you enjoy her, she looks wonderful and matches brilliantly with the Queen of Hearts doll! I absolutely adore her skirt, she looks simply stunning. And with such a low edition number as well! What a great find! ^_^

Thanks, PrincessxJasmine89 & Selithiel! Getting Alice was a major impulsive splurge, but I am so glad that I got her. It's very strange how sometimes all it takes is revisiting our beloved Disney films to rekindle the love that we always held for these characters. In financial hindsight, I wish I had bought them both back in August 2011, when Designer Cinderella was released, because I did see them posted for sale at the same time, but I was so stubbornly against buying 17" dolls at that time... Goodness how that has changed! I'm pretty sure I know which already-released doll will be my next target for purchase, but we'll see!

DRJ1828, those photos are so beautiful! You really do have some great photos posted on this thread, I always enjoy looking through them! ^_^ It's quite nice to see how the singing Rapunzel and the LE Rapunzel compare in terms of hair and facial features.

Shivatopia, it really is strange how revisiting a film even once gives you the urge to purchase dolls from the movie, or any other merchandise in that fact! I guess that when it comes down to it, it is the films that start all the magic, there is no other company like Disney. <3 However, it is rather sad how dolls demand ridiculously high prices on the secondary market, that's why I am eagerly awaiting the release of the next 17 inch doll! ^_^ I have a strong feeling it is Cinderella, although Disney could surprise us all and make it Merida or another Princess before Cindy, but as we've all said before, I think she will be released in line with the Blu-Ray in October. And isn't it usually 2 dolls a year, or at least 2 'sets' a year (as with the Alice and Queen dolls)?

For all of those living in the USA, I heard you're getting your Merida 12 inch doll on the 23rd April, I hope the UK doll release isn't delayed much longer! </3 If anyone gets her, it would be great if you could post a photo or two, please! I really can't wait for the doll! I would love to see a Designer interpretation with her, I am considering doing an OOAK Merida Designer when she comes out, and when I have finished with my OOAK 12 inch Jasmine.

DRJ1828's photots are the best! They are always so inspiring, and they always manage to convince me to want more dolls (which I need like I need a hole in my head)! Through the sheer gorgeousness of these pictures, I totally broke my long-standing rule to only collect dolls in the standard Barbie-size range. Now I have obtained 5 of the 17" LE Disney dolls since February...

I agree that 17" LE Cinderella is pretty much a sure-bet this fall. Sales and demand for these dolls are strong, and Cinderella is the face of the Disney Princess franchise (at least from a Disney marketing viewpoint - re: the Silver Designer Cinderella doll). Now the question remains as to whether or not Pocahontas will get a 17" LE doll with the rumored summer blu ray release of Pocahontas/Pocahontas II, because that would throw a wrench in the previous pattern of 2 release periods for the LE dolls per year thus far:
Snow White - October 06, 2009
Tiana - March 16, 2010
Belle - October 05, 2010
Rapunzel - March 29, 2011
Mother Gothel - March 29, 2011 (surprise release*)
Alice - August 22, 2011 (surprise release*)
The Queen of Hearts - August 22, 2011 (surprise release*)
Wedding Rapunzel - March 28, 2012
<*The "surprise release" dolls did not have a pre-order option and have smaller LE edition sizes>

Of course, Disney may decide not to only keep these dolls as a twice-a-year thing. They know that they are popular. Adding to the general speculation, Aladdin is supposedly set for a Spring 2013 release and The Little Mermaid is rumored to be the fall 2013 release, so we will probably see Jasmine and Ariel then. I have not heard anything about a Mulan blu ray release (though I would not be surprised if it will also be a Mulan/Mulan II combo pack), and poor Aurora already had her Diamond Edition Blu Ray release in 2008, so a 17" LE doll is a total toss-up for her! Naturally, if any new info is discovered, I'm sure this forum will have it!

I completely agree Shiva! Definitely Cinderella in fall, and then Jasmine and Ariel in 2013. Poor Aurora!!! I'll have to wait quite sometime for her release, I am sure. I'm betting she will end up being the last one, as they've already put out the Blu-Ray. Perhaps they'll do one with a digital copy, and that release will have her. I'll be so distraught if I can't have an LE of my favorite princess. I'd like to think they would do her blue dress, but since they always market her in pink, I would assume that is what they would go with. Her woods outfit would be lovely though... She's only in about 18 minutes of the film, and she spends the most of her time in that outfit. If I can ever get my hands on Snow White that might console me if they never do Aurora Honestly though, I can't see them leaving out any princesses.

I'm really curious as to how the Ariel doll would be done. My best guess is a rendition of her fin (kind of like the Disney Parks version of the classic Ariel doll). I don't think they could pull off her pink gown so well. Her out-and-about dress would be cute, but I don't think they could fancy it up enough. Maybe the wedding gown? (ugh, those sleeves!) Regardless, I'm super excited for her, and I can only imagine the kind of details they could do with Jasmine. A surprise Pocahontas would be lovely - no princess should be left out of the line! I also think that of all the singing dolls (as they generally are the base of the LE ones), Pocahontas is one of the most beautiful. We'll have to see though!

You are right Shivatopia . If there are any new info discovered it will be on here. And I can confirm that there is going to be another release. I just can't say what it is yet =).

Those photos do seem to have the same effect on me, I am currently on the lookout for Snow White and Rapunzel (LE 5000), I have no idea how I will afford this venture, but I will find a way! Snow White becomes higher on my want list every time I look at her! :eek2:

I hope Cindy is released in the autumn, I think she will be quite beautiful! As much as I'd like Pocahontas to get a LE doll release, I'm not too sure if it will end up falling through, as the 2 doll per year thing seems to be pretty strict, but as Selithiel says, no Princess should be left out, and I don't think Disney intends to leave anyone out, either. And of course we have the ever so controversial Merida to consider if she ever gets added to the line!
Words cannot even describe how excited I am for the Aladdin Blu Ray, if a Jasmine doll came hand in hand with that release I may just pass out... she would be a beautiful doll to behold if Disney get her right! :anxious: Ariel would also be very beautiful, but I can't imagine at the moment how they'd represent her in doll form....

I am hoping there will be a Mulan and Pocahontas doll, maybe due to the fact that their Blu Ray releases will probably be a combo pack will see these potential dolls having similar releases, perhaps surprise releases? But as you say, this forum will be the first place to hear of any new releases, and I feel as if things will only get better! ^_^

p.s. Great date list of all the doll releases, it is quite a useful tool when trying to predict releases! And I apologize for my ignorance, but I wasn't interested in the 17 inch dolls until this year... approximately how long do we find out about a surprise release doll before she goes on sale? Also, does anyone know what the widest release of any limited (17 or 12 inch) doll has been in the UK? London seems to be the only place where LE dolls can be bought without venturing to the shark infested waters of DisneyStore.co.uk.

We can always rely on you, ElleB! You are our Disney Store Insider Correspondent!

I found out about Gothel when she was shipped to our store the week of the preorder pickups for Rapunzel. We only had 8 of her and she sold out in less than ten minutes from our store. The surprise releases annoyed me. I didn't get Alice or the Queen. I thought she would at least pop up in store to preorder. Also don't forget all the other LE dolls that have been released that were non-princesses like Toy Story's Buzz, Woody, Bullseye, Jesse, NBC-Jack, NBC, Sally, and the LE Car Die Cast Set, and LE Simba. Disney has released limited edition items according to the new movie releases in the past years since the success of the first LE Snow White Doll. Most likely, each Princess movie will have a doll. It's expected now. I hope they re-release Snow White. She is exquisite.

Shivatopia seeing your pictures makes me want to try to hack up some of my savings and splurge on Snow White and Alice. After the first Rapunzel doll was added to the LE series...I decided not to ever miss another release ever again. Seeing Snow White kills me.....I keep thinking about how I held her, how I sold her to people, and how close I was to getting her and finally just ended up not getting her!

I know she is an older doll and is Mattel rather than Disney Store, but I just managed to get this lovely Fairytale Wedding Giselle doll from ebay and just ahd to post a picture as I think she is totally gorgeous )

She was used when I got her and had a couple of bits of jewellery etc missing but she is in really good condition otherwise and is very hard to find in the UK, so I was just pleased to find her at all. I really do think she is one of the prettiest dolls in my collection.

If anyone is interested there are loads more piccys on my http://www.facebook.com/HollysDollys page.

I really can relate to the internal debate of "to buy or not to buy, " ElleB. I think I need to admit to myself that I have a shopping problem, particularly when it comes to all of these pretty Disney dolls! I have been casting my net out for another 17" LE doll that I don't have yet, but since I try my luck with eBay, I have thus far been shut down by being outbid. Maybe it's a sign to "not buy" any more for now! Future 17" LE doll releases I know I will buy are Cinderella and Aurora, but of course the prices for them at release will be normal. For any other princess dolls I will have to see how the design strikes me. But I still do strongly advocate for getting a LE Snow White doll and a LE Alice doll if an (affordable) opportunity pops up. Snow White is setting the bar, and I think it is safe to say that she has plateaued at the $500-$600 range, based on auctions since the start of 2012. Unfortunately, right now on eBay since last week, Alice is starting to track at closer to Snow White prices (Yikes!)...

Congratulations on obtaining Wedding Giselle, Merriennes! It's great to see actual pictures of this doll! I did a very brief mini summary of the different Giselle dolls many several pages back. Sharing Mattel-made Disney dolls here is absolutely 100% encouraged, too! BTW, I love keeping up with your facebook page (Yes, I am a fan)!

Hi EVERYBODY - I just wanted to tell the doll collectors that if you have any great pins and are still looking for designer dolls I am willing to trade! I have Jasmine, pocahontas, rapunzel, tiana and aurora up for trade and I also have the new short hair rapunzel doll - a few Ashton Drake winnie the pooh dolls and more. I used to collect dolls but have decided I just can't keep on due to lack of space so if anybody is interested at all get in touch

Me too Shivatopia! I have a shopping problem when it comes to this too. I really wanted Alice...I almost bought her but forgot to log on to ebay and she sold for about 400 shipped. She will definitely hit Snow Whites prices...I don't know if I could ever get my hands on Snow White. Maybe if someone was willing to do a trade, but that's highly unlikely since most people just want to sell her since she is worth so much now. I don't think you and I will be able to take a break this year from shopping dolls :anxious: ...with the release of the cinderella blu-ray...One can only assume that there would be a doll release. I really am curious to see what else is in the LE doll line up or other LE items coming out.

Yes, I am very excited that Diamond Edition Cinderella is due on October 2nd, and it will feature "Tangled Ever After" as a special feature! Naturally, I assume a 17" LE doll will also be released at that same time, and a 17" LE Cinderella is definitely on my list! I'm not sure if I want to get the regular blu ray/DVD combo pack or the deluxe 6-disk Cinderella trilogy set with the jewelry box. Cinderella II was generally terrible, except for the Anastasia story, and Cinderella III had it's own set of flaws (I still find it hard to believe that Lady Tremaine would so easily be able to manipulate the Fairy Godmother's wand). The perks with pre-ordering from the Disney Store are pretty good for frequent DS shoppers (the $20 coupon for an order $40+ is pretty good, since it essentially means you get Cinderella for only $5 in the grand scheme of things). Plus the DS pre-order has the lithographs, and I do love to collect those, too.

In other doll news, I seriously need to join Doll-Buyer's Anonymous! I did get the 17" LE Mother Gothel (my aforementioned target), and she arrived today.
I received Mother Gothel #0065/1500. I can say little more about her than what DRJ1828 has already extensively shared with us here. As with all my dolls, my Mother Gothel will stay in her box, but she is gorgeous! I really love how her mouth totally looks like a sneer or a smirk, depending on what angle you look at her. The 12" Mother Gothel dolls' face and hair are exactly the same as the 17" LE doll, though of course smaller. I am very happy that her cloak was designed with its hood, though I can hardly imagine trying to shove that mass of black curls into it! I've made a promise that I would not buy any more dolls until 17" LE Cinderella (though if a 17" LE Aurora should appear before then, I absolutely will have to get her, too -- but I'm starting to think that a 17" LE Aurora may not be released until the DVD release of the 2014 film Maleficent, since Diamond Edition Sleeping Beauty was already released back in 2008).

Wonderful photos, Shivatopia! I was debating whether to be on the lookout for Mother Gothel or not, but I think once I get my hands on the 17'' Alice doll, she is next on my list! I love her hair, and her face is SO accurate! :eek2: Congrats on getting her, you must be the proud owner of nearly all the 17'' dolls by now! ^_^

(p.s. I wish they DID have a Doll-Buyers Anonymous, I would also be on that list  !)
