Hi, our Disney trip is coming up soon, and this is the first time we are pin trading:hsd: I want to know if we can bring our lanyards with pins on the plane in our carry-on or do I have to pack them? We are flying United, what does everyone do? Thanks

In 2009, and 2010, I flew with a large pin bag as carry-on and while they looked at the pins, the TSA in the Washington DC area did not blink, and of course Orlando sees this all the time, heck you can buy pins in the airport.

My son and I have always carried on pins. No problems in Chicago or Orlando. We've even had TSA monitors in Orlando show us the x-ray screen to see what they look like as they're screened. A few actually chatted about pin trading with us as we were putting our shoes back on in June.

I've flown with a lanyard full of pins and some loose pins in my carry-on. In fact I was sorting & entering them on pinpics while sitting in the airport waiting for the flight home.

Yes, you can have anything sharp that is less than 2" I think it was. I came back from DLR with 1000 pins in a bag and they had to hand look at it because it was so dense that the Xray couldn't get through it. Other than that, they are fine. Try to have them less than 5-7 thick and the xray can go through it probably. About to take 5-600 for a cruise in a few weeks. I'll only take them on carry-on as I don't want to trust baggage handlers.

Agree with everyone else, they are fine. But one time we were flying with a pin trading bag full of pins and the TSA pulled us aside and thought they were needles...that was the worst thing that happen, but they still let us fly. haha.

TSA hates me. I always take a pinbag full of pins and a carry on also full of extra pins. It usually takes about 15-20 minutes extra so they can go through everything. I always use clear freezer bags to hold them so they can see through the bags. I have done this for years. Some of the TSA people are really nice, but the last few times they have not been so nice.

So go ahead and take as many pins as you want, just allow extra time for your stuff to be checked closely.

We've flown with them and no problems except that sometimes they want to admire the pins. Seriously. One guy checked the bags and then went through and looked at all the pins. He was amazed. It can take more time than normal. They go through everything and typically want to swab them. Be careful that your carryon doesn't appear "heavy". If so, the airline may force you to check it.

This is good to know. I have to go through US Customs to get to Disneyland, and last time we went I just put my pins in my checked baggage, waiting until we got to DL to put them on my bag. Now that I'm graduating to lanyards, it's nice to know that this may be an option (if I feel like wearing my pins through the airport...).

This is great to know. I have been so worried about getting them through security at LAX. Last time I went with someone who put her whole pin bag in checked luggage the bag was stolen from the checked bag. She lost over 40 pins! I've been so paranoid every since. I heard people ship pins through UPS to the hotel, so I thought that might the safer way.

I've flown out of Denver to Santa Ana, LAX and Orlando with my pin trading lanyards and even a couple books and it went well, as many have said above. The books sometimes tend to cause TSA to have to look at it over again or even by hand, but I've never had a problem getting them on the plane as a carry on. I will never check my pins based on what folks have already said in this thread.
