This sounded like a lot of fun and I wish I could have been there, but for those who were "what about the law" well what about it, I'm pretty sure that all of you who camp outside of DSF overnight are breaking the law because I can guarantee that that alley isn't zoned for camping. Just because bums do it and DSF let's you do it, doesn't make it legal, the law just feels like if you're not hurting anyone than the paperwork involved in shutting it down isn't worth it, but I guarantee that the first time someone in that apartment complex complains or a scuffle takes place DSF camping is over. This was something fun that too many by the rules people had to rain on. A fight over pins can break out at any time, it's the fact that most of us conduct ourselves like adults that it doesn't.

Goofy_Moe I'm sorry this didn't work out, but it seems like you have all kinds of ideas so I'm sure that you'll come up with something. Maybe a big online board game, where we're all playing along from home and the winner gets the spoils. Maybe pin poker? Ha ha ha.
 
I like the pin poker idea. A texas hold em tourney for pins. start with a hidden mickey ante, and a LE 1000/LE 2000 as the big/small blind bids!!!!
 
Wow I cant believe this thread took this kind of a turn. I do not understand why some had to get so technical about this. it was just going to be something fun to pass the time. I say we still do it - and those who are there and want to particiapte can do so and those who dont want to dont have to.
 
While i love the idea, and I know all of us do too. I have to kinda agree that there is a chance Disney would be rather upset about us having a large auction in the alley nextdoor to DSF. What if someone gets a bee in their bonnet and gripes to the higher powers? We just lost the barrels at westward Ho because of some nonsense about us traders misbehaving. What if they DO take away our camp out privileges? "Tread lightly and keep your thinking cap on" is my advice.

I do however see both sides... So what? theres no money. They didnt freak when you guys did poker did they?(did you do poker at Brave release?) Thats gambling, even if it isnt for money. I wont be at this camp out, and niether will my husband, I hope you guys figure out a way to "not" do the auction.. wink wink nudge nudge. Sorry I will miss out on a chance at some frame sets. I bet you got some beautiful personally done art for this one Moe! I wish I could be there!
 
All I did was bring up concerns. Why am I not allowed to voice my opinion? Calling people lame, "negative nancies", etc is rather immature. I at no time resorted to personal attacks. If you don't like my post, don't read it.

This is my hobby too and the more locations that get shut down, the less opportunity I have to trade that are not online. I never said anything would happen at the event; it was just concerns based off of what people have done in the past at DLR/WDW.
 
I have to agree with wdwjuan. He and others simply expressed concerns or posed "what ifs" and it was Goofy_Moe that decided to shut down the auction. And we all know that there are traders out there that would behave the way described in these "what if" scenarios, so it's not so far-fetched.

There are lots of interesting ideas floated around here; some happen and some don't but I think it's a smart move to discuss them to try to foresee any unintended consequences.

I understand, I wasn't directing my statements to anyone in particular. I also didn't take anything personally; was just trying to bring up that this is a discussion forum and people will have difference of opinions. When people are attacked for thinking a different way, you lose all discussion.

FYI, I like the whole idea, but I think the execution at this time may not be the best. Planning at an off-site event like NFFC or Disneyana room-hopping could work perfectly.
 
After reading some of the issues and concerns, I have decided to coordinate this a bit differently...

This is going to be a Live Action fast paced trading session...

But unlike my original post which stated this is an auction run by myself... This is not what this is going to be...

This will be only for those people who are dumb enough to camp out all night in a back alley in Hollywood waiting to buy silly pins...

But rather then just trading among each other, We will alternate turns as 'the controlling trader' who will stand on some stairway in the Alley that does not belong to us, but should not really be a problem if there is only one up there at a time...

The 'Controlling Trader' will offer up an item that they are willing to trade (Similar to an auction, but not in anyway really an auction)... The controlling trader will take offers from the rest of the group until they have decided to make a trade or to just keep their pin...

There will be a sign-up list at the event so that everyone may take an item up and have a turn or turns as the controlling trader...

Again this is not an Auction... Just fast paced trading in a group format with one person at a time offering up items for trade...

Unfortunatly there will be no online participation available, but please use this thread to express any new concerns and or opinions...

Also use this thread to advertise the items that you intend on trading as 'the controlling trader' so that anyone who is interested in possibly offering you a trade can take some time between now and then to get pins you may want...

OK, Let me have it now... Any concerns???
 
I guess my feeling on the matter is, I just want to camp out, no drama, get my pins and do this again. I am just worried about DSF and someone making this into a "big issue". I have no personal issue with it, but I am just worried about DSF taking camping out for pins away. Disney has been taking away pin trader areas and I just don't want to loose this too. I think that would be a fun idea, but maybe have a gathering at someone's house locally or see if My D-Pins can host or something. I just would rather play it safe. But this is my own opinion.
 
My only concern is that I live in Oklahoma!! Sounds like a ton of fun and I wish I could be there!!!

Moreover, it is being called and advertised as an auction. A reasonable interpretation is that this is an auction. If not, then it’s simply fishing expeditions.

I have already posted significantly amounts of information that auctions have special legal issues concerning them. Another user has indicated that California law appears to controls them.

There is a large difference in holding a single auction online here on DPF vs. bringing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars’ worth of items to the Soda Fountain and holding a physical auction on their back-porch.

Why is this an issue?

Because we have already lost a lot of pin trading opportunities because of perceived greed by pin traders at the Disney parks. We have lost Tokyo Disneyland Resort. We have lost Downtown Disney in both Florida and California. We have lost pin trading events. Now it appears that we are in position to harm pin trading at the Soda Fountain and threatening this forum. I don't believe this is an issue to be taken lightly with hyperbole invoking the PotUS.

Kind of felt like I was being attacked, for stating a VERY discreet and calm opinion. I did not lash out at anyone, nor did I yell.

When someone offers me a pin and I say no, and then offers another, it's like bidding to me. Legally? Well, we see how views of that are on here.

I was not tring to say someone was wrong, I was stating, that if there are laws about auctioning items for other items, then we all need to review what we are all individually doing.

Anyway, I did take it personally, but I'll get over it. We all have our pet peeves, and sometimes, we act out without thinking how it might affect someone else.

I still think it was a good idea, especially as Goofy Moe has not been one of those people to take advantage of others. I see those people all the time at the park. I could name them, but Goofy Moe, no.

This is my opinion, and since I do not have a law degree, that is what they will remain, my opinions.

Not ranting, just pointing out that words can cause hurt.

first as long as DSF sells pins people will wait in line... There is no possible way they can prevent people from standing and waiting on the streets of Hollywood... Secondly if the DSF comes out for any reason which they won't since the Soda Fountain will be closed... But if they do express any concern then we can just stop... No issues, we just stop and clinb back into our sleeping bags... Disney takes away trading areas on their own property as a result of the actions of traders... We are going to be in an alley not on Disney Property... DSF does not own that alley it is the city's space...

 
I know what your saying. And again, I hear you but its just a thing I don't want to gamble if you know what I mean. I would feel better if it was approved by DSF. But again, I won't be participating, I'll just be getting my pins. But, I hope it works out and everything is okay. That was all I was saying.
 
That will be on the Controlling Trader... When I take my turn, the item will be traded to whoever holds up the best offer... I am going to take a risk, but life is a risk... Controlling Traders will be alloted a specific amount of time before the next one goes up... So if they do not make a trade they can wait their turn and try it again... Those who are willing to trade will have better action than those who are just fishing... as I am sure we will all see happen...

I would... If it something special then people can plan for it... But it is not necessary... The ability to participate mearly requires you to put your name on the rotation when you want to go up... I cannot wait to see the first few little kids to go up, I am gonna so way overbid for their pins...LOL... I think the kids will make out the best...

I thought of that and I will try to look at every kids collection during the day and I will recognize a Tangled marquee that I had not seen all day... LOL... So don't even think that you will get away with it...hehe
