I would say it was pretty easy. I arranged a meeting at a neutral place and I left the money with a person I trusted while I looked at the collection. He was a nice older man who had been working at the Wide World of Sports Complex for the past eight years. We reminisced and traded stories while we browsed through his collection and at the end I decided it was worth it. My sister and friend commented about how sketchy the whole check thing sounded.

If you're going to buy something off Craigslist, be smart about it. Ask to see everything in person at a neutral place and always have someone with you just in case things go sour. I've heard a lot of Craigslist horror stories before, but those people were in situations which left themselves vulnerable. Just cover your bases and always play it safe. If it smells fishy, that's probably because it is and trust your gut.

It's an old Craiglist scam where someone sends you a fake check and when you try to deposit it in your account, it routes all your banking information to the person trying to scam you. They then empty your account and you're left penniless.

I think I tried to contact the person you bought the pins from, but they wouldn't send me pictures (maybe they had their first buyer then..I don't know). But they acted shady and I just let it go. I have had a few Craigslist pin collection buys get a little hairy. So, I'm really cautious where I meet people and I try to get a feel for them before I go. There are some seriously scary people out there!!

You said the man didn’t fall for the scam. How does one avoid this? What do you do with the check? Take a cashier’s check? What?
