DPF Development HELP! Help us test the DPF "Public" Pin Trading Board!
Wow! We weren't aware this was being put together...

Exciting that the DPF community is getting a custom trade alternative experience. Happy to have the Pin & Pop IDs and data power this ( and many in the DPF community are the ones who have graciously contributed that data to P&P in the first place). I would only ask that photos for this not be used from Pin & Pop and instead be uploaded for listings and offers directly by the photo owners. If the DPF users here have originally uploaded those photos to P&P and they give permission for use in the DPF Trading Board then absolutely grab them from our site and upload them here. Photo-sharing and photo ownership is something our Mods (which include DPF members) and our users have voiced concern over and I want to make sure we're honoring that.

To be clear, we are always in favor of seeing innovation happen for the larger pin trading community... "a rising tide lifts all boats (that don't have compromised hulls)". We appreciate the DPF community and the collaboration we've had. Let us know how we can help!
Hi Chris,

This is fair and understandable given that images are going to be the most egregious consumption of data, especially with the current implementation where metadata is cached for 30 days, but images are still being hotlinked.

I’ll look into correcting this and forcing the user upload piece. Ultimately, using real photos makes for a better/more honest experience in the end, anyway.

For clarification, regarding the P&P “pinformation” cards we just implemented (example below — when users post a P&P link here in the forum it just renders the card inline with the pin’s metadata) —

are these still okay to use the image & hotlink, or should I make a change to this to at least cache a copy locally, so your CDN isn’t getting hammered every time a card loads?

At least for this feature (which only exists here on a relatively “slow” forum) id like to find some middle ground, because the visual aspect is a core feature of the cards.

Finally I (and I’m sure others,) really appreciate the willingness and openness to collaboration and sharing that P&P has had, which is a breath of fresh air compared to being so stifled in the past in what we could/could not create.

This has been an idea that’s been swirling around for quite a while and is really meant to just be an alternative experience to Trade Arcades and other online trading events, and wasn’t meant as a competitor or to “step on anyone’s toes”, so to speak. Whether it does/doesn’t get used in the future is fine, it was/is still a fun project.

Cheers!

I put in a tracking number for a package that should deliver tomorrow to see what tracking looked like moving through USPS, but the tracking isn’t showing up at all. I copied directly from my USPS tracking page and it’s the same numbers.
on the backend, i can see that this listing's tracking info shows as "out for delivery" -- when it changes status, the trade should automatically mark itself as "complete" 🙂 (it's still in "pending"), after which you'll be allowed to test leaving feedback.

My two cents comes from someone who uses no other social media platform except DPF and PinandPop. I formerly enjoyed Pinpics but it got way too confusing for me:

I would still use it if it was required to upload my own photos of pins, but I guess to me the ease of it in every day trading format is kind of a fun idea for those of us who have schedules that can’t keep up with the trade arcades. The trade arcades look amazing and I love the new breath it’s given to the pin community. This comes off as a completely different avenue of a pin trading experience to me and I love that I get notified with trade opportunities 🤩

I’ve been loving seeing how this develops and I do hope it’s something that can be a fun complimentary trade avenue in the future of all the other great things I’ve observed from PinandPop and DPF 🥰❣️

I think it's OK to use the image and hotlink in the card. It's more of a "media embedded link" than a full blown application using potentially hundreds or thousands of images. I let you know if I get any pushback from any of the original photo owners.

We've starting putting together a data sharing agreement as more in the wider community are wanting to build cool things and we'd like to help with data APIs - but the one piece that seems to cause the most concern with our contributors is the use of their images. They've given us permission to use them but they don't necessarily want to see them on sites or in apps that they didn't explicitly agree to. I get it - we've taken down lots of images that made their way onto our site without the owners consent. So for now, our data agreement excludes photos from being used. (again, if the original owners are here and give permission than grab them from our site).

AI is changing the speed at which these applications can be built and there are some really cool ideas out there that just need some good pin data to make them fly. Hopefully, the pin community is in for some exciting times (it feels like we could all use some more positive pin experiences too)!

RE: image ownership -- makes complete sense and totally understandable.

and I agree; by this point, about 80% (or more) of the codebase is generated, and the project has given me a really good feel of workflow with regard to agentic development. The pace at which development can happen now is insane given my background/"day job" is huge-scale enterprise ERP systems in the public sector where things move at a glacial pace, so this has been an exciting and engaging project, if nothing else.
