Why does every one charge so much for shipping? Its not more then three dollers to send 50 hiddenmickey pins. Wht the 3 dollars then the 50 cents extra. We pay about 4.28 for a pin if you buy the 7 packs of pins. You should not charge much more then that for a easy to find trader! Shipping a fist class package is $1.71 at the lowest not 2.50!!! I get people need to make money but really! Come on be fair about things. We are smart people. Don't treat us like we are not! Please think about what you say the pirce is. When it comes to higher priced pins you still don't need a hugh shipping cost! If its a heavier pin then yeah raise the shipping. But Please be fair in your shipping costs!

If you are referring to the shipping costs on eBay, then I can see why they charge high shipping. The extra shipping charges can cover cost of the shipping materials, gas usage to the PO (some can live miles and miles away from the closest PO), and also other fees incurred when the auction is posted and sold.
 
What exactly is your idea of a huge shipping cost? I ship out of the post office and my cost is always over $2 plus you have to take into account packing supplies. I try to reuse envelopes when I can but I just had to go buy more packing tape and bubble wrap. The prices on those things are ridiculous! I stopped at Target and two rolls of tape was over $6 and the bubble wrap roll was $11. I didn't feel like hitting multiple stores and was in a hurry so I just paid it.

Here are three shipments I sent this week and the costs:

1 DS.com pin - shipping $2.22 + DC $0.80 = $3.02
12 DS.com pins - shipping $9.15 + $250 insurance $4.75 + DC $0.70 = $14.60
3 DS.com pins - shipping $2.05 + $125 insurance $2.85 + DC $0.80 = $5.70

I typically charge $3 plus $0.50 for each additional pin and that doesn't even cover my full costs. So, what is too much? 50 pins, even if they are hidden mickeys would be pretty heavy and not cheap to send.

Again, what is "that much"? Without proper context it is difficult to know what you are talking about.

I'm surprised though that 50 hidden mickies would only be $5.34... Unless you are just tossing them in an envelope with no bubble wrap or anything, which, if that's the case, isn't a package I'd want to be on the receiving end of.
 
We sell pins on ebay and charge 2.90 shipping a pin which is very fair. This is what the 2.90 pays for:

1.71 - price to ship
.25+ - Price to list pin
.50 - Price of envelope
=$2.46 so only .44 cent "profit" but you also have to consider the time it takes to list/research (15+ minutes) Time it takes to package pin (5 minutes) and time it takes to go to the post office and stand in line (20+ minutes) also ebay takes about 8% of the sale price. So really most sellers aren't trying to take money from you they just price shipping at what is fair. I once actually had a buyer Emailing me after getting their pin and complaining about my "high" shipping price and how I own the money to make up for it and demanded that I pay them the 60 cents I owe them! I mean really, come on! She even threaten me with negative feedback till I explained to her how ridiculous she was being and exactly what she spent that 2.90 on.
 

OMG, I think I'd lose it with someone like that! If you don't like the shipping then don't buy it! As a buyer, shipping is part of the cost of a pin. If a pin is listed at $7 and shipping $3 and another of the same pin is listed at $8 with $2 shipping, what's the difference? To the buyer it is still a $10 pin! If you don't like the total cost then just move on.
 
It was just kind of thrown together when I recived it. They wanted the 2.50 shipping wich is fair in that case. Plus .50 cents after the first one which in turn adds up to over 24.50 in shipping. So I'm sorry thats a crazy price on top of the orignal one. I don't mind paying a good amount for shipping but 24.50 when it was not shipped nicely.

E-bay is sometimes un fair in there charges as well. I prefer to not buy from there because I wouldn't like to be charged that much!
 

Then yes, that is absurd. But it think that is not the norm. Sellers that do that are probably not the sellers you want to be buying from anyways because their pins are probably fake.

eBay has been getting a really bad rap on the boards lately. There are lots of good sellers there and a good seller will typically cap shipping on multiple purchases. Like, $3 for the first pin, $0.50 for each additional up to $5 or $10 and then every pin after ships free. For me, it all boils down to you get what you pay for. Buy cheap pins from a sketchy seller, get poor service. Of course, you can alway find good buys, but everyone should be educated when buying from eBay - or anywhere for that matter.
 
just postage for up to 3 ounces is 1.75, more if over that and you have to round it up! say a pin is 3.4 ounces the P.O. considers it 4 ounces. wrap pin in bubble wrap secured with tape place in bubble envelope around 1.00 depending where you get bubble envelope. so far thats 2.75 plus delivery confirmation which is any where from 0.19 to 0.90 paypal vs post office. so far it is over $3.00. what do you mean by too much?? plus ebay now charges you based on shipping fees also! if i charge 2.60 to ship they charge me 0.25. So tell me i am charging too much for shipping again!!! oh i forgot ink for printer, paper for label. how is that too much??? for one pin?
 
See again e-bay is not what I am looking at. It is the outside sellers. Like people on here or random people you meet at the park and then they ship to you. I have had both e-bay and outside sells. Ebay I would pay the shipping becase I know they charge hugh fees for every thing. But on here thats crazy to not have a cap on the shipping.
 

ugh I know and it took a good 2 hours to write the nicest screw you letter i could so I wouldn't get my first negative feedback over it! And she got a good deal on this pin too! I even looked at other pins that she bought and she payed $4+ on shipping on single pins and didn't complain to them! she did eventually did leave positive feedback without saying anything haha.


This is dumb to make you pay $24 on shipping. Most sellers would most likely only charge a few dollars more if someone bought this many pins from them because it saves them ALOT of money. I think for this many pins I would charge about 10 dollars.
 

I guess I don't understand...didn't you know what they were going to charge you before you bought them? Why did you buy them? Have you brought this to the attention of the seller if it happened here? Tell them that you can see what they paid and that you feel you were overcharged.
 
at the least if i see shipping is giong to go over what i would pay for flat rate priority, i would add in around 75 cents to cover the other costs for bubble wrap and such but no more than that! i normaly charge here what i do on ebay but am more willing to cap it once i know the costs to ship. all shipping and handling costs should be specified on the listings here and if you buy multiples work it out with the seller here before committing to the final sale. and if there are still problems that is what the mods are for here and the feedback system!
 
Most sales on these boards aren't shipping 50 pins. And if you are purchasing pins on these boards, each pin will be padded individually so they don't dent/scratch each other. I'd say I've never had a sale where I've shipped 50 pins to one person (shoot, I don't think I've shipped 10 pins to one person on a sale here), but if it were to get that high, flat rate boxes can be worked out.

Most sellers don't bother to list the option of flat rate boxes, because it is so rarely needed here. But if it is a better fit for your shipment, keep the dialogue open between the seller/buyer and you'll be good to go!
 

I offer flat rate boxes for boxed jumbos, it's the best way to get a free box and a decent shipping rate.

...okay. I think I've got this- he's basically talking about the people who put, say, "$2.50 for the first pin, .50 each additional" and he's looking at, like, 50 pins. Which, if the seller REALLY stuck to that, the shipping WOULD be absurd.

Like someone else in this thread said, there's usually a cap to that- just talk to the seller.

::shrug:: I don't find most of the shipping prices bad. A lot of people do forget about things like material costs and such.
 


Plus these days, Ebay is charging a Final Value Fee on shipping as well. So whenever I sell something on there, I have to calculate that into my shipping cost so at least I come out even. Most times, with shipping fees and the final value fee, I end up only ahead by 5 cents or something like that.
 
Most people are not trying to make money off the shipping. Once you get to s certain levelnof cost for shipping, most if not all DPF members will use Priority mail or something.

On EBay it is a different story. :-(
 

For me, if it cost more to ship it standard mail than it would cost for a small Priority Mail Box, then I use priority mail. I never spend more than $5 for shipping up to 20 pins. After that it depends on the size of the Priority Mail box. I always charge actual shipping costs. If I have to buy bubble wrap and tape I figure I get 100+ packages out of the wrap so I divide the cost by how many packages I can get out of the roll. Shipping is sometimes such a nebulous number I try to have a fair system. But as it is for everything, you can't please all the people all the time, just some of the people, some of the time.
 
Sorry to be frank, but honestly, why would you even agree to a purchase like this and then complain??

Did you even ask the seller about the possibility of using a flat rate box/envelope to save on shipping costs?

Most of the people here on DPF are very friendly and reasonable about requests like this.
 
I didn't pay the 24 dollars. I was just saying that you cant rip people off. I wont buy from that seller again as they were very rudee to me as well. I'm not disputing that shipping does cost. People that aren't fair about it is why I started this thred. Some of the things said I didn't even consider until I read some of your posts. I just know what I have shipped was pretty cheap and that people were trying to get money off of the shipping.

I get padded bubble wrap envelopes for .89 cents
I then use old recived bubble wrap pakages that I got pins in to wrap.
Then shipping at most was 5.15 With DC
So all in all it was 7 maybe 8 dollars with gas.
 
I got charged 6.50 GBP for shipping from the UK for 1 pin . I was mad about that, but I paid it because it was a pin I really wanted . Then the seller messaged me 5 days later , and said that the shipping turned out to be more , so if I want to pay 2 gbp more they would send me the pin . So thats 8.50 gbp thats like $14 for 1 pin I thought was just ridiculous . So said I wouldn't pay more so they refunded me the money. That made me mad because I wanted the pin . I left negative feedback so they worked with me to retract the feedback for reduced shipping . So everything turned out good , but it was still a pain .

I am sorry, but I am confused between these 2 conflicting statements. So, you did not actually pay $24.

In that case, are we discussing here a hypotethical case of "it is possible to rip someone off with shipping charges" ?

I think most sellers do not expect a buyer to ask for 50 pins, probably 2-5 pins are common average for multiple purchases. I would like to think that nobody on DPF is out to make a miserable little profit from shipping charges.

In this case, as a buyer on ebay, I would buy the $8 pin with $2 shipping, because I would get more ebay bucks.

I'm not disagreeing with you, erudolf. I'm just letting other people here who sell on ebay know how a buyer's mind works. And since y'all said that they charge the seller based on the final value (including shipping) now, I can't see why sellers don't just charge more for the pin, and set the shipping at free. Having that "free shipping" sign on a listing really grabs my attention.

Of course, there could be something that I'm not thinking of here... I've never sold on ebay. :wiggle:
