The thread about whats the most you'd spend on a pin got me wondering how people fund their pin purchases. I got in a little bit of "trouble" for pin shopping so now my husband and I have a deal that whatever money I get from selling stuff online I can spend on pins. Any purchases that are deducted from our bank account have to be a joint decision. We don't really have a monthly pin allotment. We just look at the budget for the month and depending on whats left for fun money that can be spent on pins or some of husband's other hobbies. When we go to DLR or WDW we have a souvenir budget that is mostly spent on pins. Just curious how others do it?

Occasionally I'll just buy a pin using my money from my bank account, but usually I sell a pin to buy a pin. I've been going to soda fountain releases more often and if I get an extra set, I sell that one and use it to buy another pin.

I haven't really payed much for pins lately, most have been a few pin games here and there that my wife allows me too and then again as well for the upcoming secret santa...

it just depends on whatever is left for me every month, learn to budget and don't buy too many because that's when things get out of hand :)

I am in the same spot as you. I can really only buy a pin for my collection if I fund the purchase from the money I get selling. Its why I have my pin shoppe. I presell DLR releases at a tiny markup and keep that for pin money, or ice cream money while at the park or whatever.

I usually try to sell off pins. If it's for a high end purchase I might use my credit card and not use the card till I paid off what I purchase. Sometimes paying off some pins little by little helps me obtain grails. It why I use my credit card. I also look at eBay auctions on a daily basis to see what some people are willing to pay for particular pins I want. Then I can gage how much to save when the pins come around again either on eBay or here on DPF. Whatever I do I set a limit to what I am willing to pay by having a general idea how much some pins are worth and I try my hardest to find a deal to stay with in my limit. I've also haggled a little because sometimes people who are selling pins are collectors themselves and can be more understanding to make a deal. If I see someone selling a pin that is priced way higher than an eBay price then I will ask them if they would be willing to sell it to me for that price. Or I've even asked if I had anything in my traders that they wanted so maybe we can do a half trade and have money deal just to lower the price. You never know till you ask right? It's all about budgeting, timing, and patience. Overall I try my hardest to trade first before resorting to shelling out money. If I try a few times to trade and the fish aren't biting then I know my best chance of getting a certain pin is to purchase it. :)

I work hard and use my callback(overtime) money to fund my pin purchases. So far I have been disciplined enough to not go overboard. I have never sold a pin and have only traded less than 50. Minus the CM trades of course.

I will definitely have to cut back once my wife receives a transplant though. I will have to live in a hotel for a couple of months as well as maintain my current home.

Usually, my tip money is spent on pins. I usually don't spend more then a certain amount on pin purchases but that becomes a whole different story when "pin lots" become available with things I want.

Paying down my credit card is my financial priority. Then comes upping my 401K to 10% of my earnings, then savings for major bumps. I've been trapped in the house with less shifts, and shorter hours on the shifts I do get, and so I've fallen victim to wanting more and more pins, and buying a few. My goal has been to put $250 every two weeks into my credit card; this month and the last I've slacked off!!!! It's not a crisis, because the goal was to hit it hard so it would be all clear for the new year; it's just I have to regain my focus. I have to give myself a little bit of spending money, or else I start going crazy hahaha, and the one big paycheck I do get, I spend too much of it instead of putting it towards my financial health! I allow myself between $30 and $50 for pins per paycheck; this also includes money for gas if I decide to drive up to Disneyland or the Soda Fountain (which is about $25).

Sounds like you have a good system in place! :)

I'm sorry your wife needs a transplant. Hope all goes well for her!!

I think its hard too when you're spending more time at home because then you have more time to look at the pins you want. We definitely go up and down with getting motivated to pay off bills. I'm also not very good at being disciplined. Sounds like you have your head in the right spot, though!! Always good to leave a little room for having fun. :)

Hubby gives me a budget ,every month..but I have been buying vinylmation figurines ,as I need some to complete certain sets and ones I like, and Larry loves seeing them too

For the most part I acquire my pin funds from selling random things on eBay...whatever ends up in my paypal account from these sales is my pin money! I have spent some of my working income in the past for a pin, but only a couple of times and it was either too good of a deal or a pin I didn't want to pass up! I try to trade when I have something people want as well! :D Great topic!!! :bigthumb:

I've been having trouble trading for pins from my wants list... so it's easier for me to sell pins in order to buy the pins I want. In essence, it's still a trade; sell pin for money then use money to buy pin.

I never wanted to, but I've come to the point where I have realized that I just cannot afford a lot of pins without selling things. Given I'm not by DSF to sell those, I try to sell what I can find and buy online, so if there is a big release on DS.com or something, I'll generally buy a lot and sell them to get a pin budget, it's worked so far, but DS.com has had some great stuff recently that I want to keep and plan on keeping at least 1 of (like every LM doll ) and I still cannot bear to spend over like $200 on a pin, and that $200 pin better be grail-worthy for me to go that high O_o Only 1 pin is currently "grail-worthy" to me and it is worth way over $200

Selling things to buy things. Being a stay at home mom (aside from doing photography on the side which is always crazy crazy slow b/c of there being so many photographers in the area) I don't have the extra income without selling to get it. I was very bad about using credit cards to fund purchases for a while there and that got me way too far in debt. I sold my entire collection short of a few faves about 3 years ago and I was so sad over loosing all of my pins I did not do so great with cc's. Once dh was working again I went on a bit of a buying spree with cc's. I have certainly learned my lesson from that and have worked over the last year especially to pay all of that cc debt off and I am SO CLOSE now. I will buy pin collections and keep the things I most want (if any) and sell the rest. I will also buy from Craigslist to resell (not pins). Sold several other type of Disney collectibles, Christmas items, etc. I don't live near the parks or anything to buy the new stuff to sell so I only end up with the older things. I spend a bit too much time on ebay buying what I consider nice collections. I keep money in paypal to pay for those collections then the sells from that (be it here or ebay) go to cc payments plus some left to buy other collections or pins to keep. I don't buy much to keep at this point since I have my faves on my 3 corks and they are full so I am happy with them like they are but there are definitely a few I am still after so in the meantime I will keep working to pay down the remainder of my 2 cc's and will never make the mistake of using them on pins again!

hi I don't ,i'm a really naughty person with a very tolerant hubby, as long as some of the pins are tinkerbells im not in too much trouble he he xxxxx
but really ,I try to trade as much as possible ,and getting UK store LE pins really helps other than that I sometimes sell on eBay ,as I've not learnt how to upload pictures on this site
