I have the chance to get this pin in trade:

Pin 66022: DisneyShopping.com - Jumbo Halloween Series Jessica as The Queen of Hearts Pin

But it is minus it's card backer. I am fence sitting right now as to whether I should accept the trade, or pass. While a nice pin, it would be a trader if a higher want came available, which is why I am wanting the card, in case I trade it. Does the fact that it is a costumed Jessica trump the no card, or in this day & age of potential scrappers, should I pass without the card?

Thx

Unfortunately, several higher quality counterfeits of this pin have surfaced. You can find an excellent article on them in the pin comparison section of the forum.

I just looked on an auction site and saw 2 of these pins. One is priced fairly highly and says that it is new, in original packaging from Disney, etc. The other is much less and says NOTHING about original packaging, etc. The listing is carefully worded. Not saying anything about it is illegitimate. Just interesting.

Thank you for letting me know about that. I sent a link to the forum post to the potential trader to explain my hesitation in taking the trade

The original trade was going to be one of three items according to PinPics:

Pin 54550 (DisneyShopping.com - 'Stitch As' Series (Roger Rabbit))
Pin 55814 (DisneyShopping.com - Motorcycle Series - Roger & Jessica Rabbit)
Pin 66022 (DisneyShopping.com - Jumbo Halloween Series Jessica as The Queen of Hearts Pin)

They offered me either 55814 or 66022, with the 55814 on card, and the 66022 not on card.

In this particular case, the original card would be important to me because they are so many counterfeits out there. If the pin has not been scrapped, then a card is not that important to me. Also, in the current Disney Story pins, they don't put the correct SKU on Pinpics or on the cards so if you remove the pin it's hard to match them back up. I just ran into that issue yesterday. I know there are several fakes of this pin out there and unless you really know and trust the trader, be wary.

I agree, pins known to be faked I'd want the card and confirmation, at least, that they bought it where it was sold. There are other pins I'd want the back to. For example, the Star Tours pin in my signature comes on a special backer, I'd want it.

In your case, I think the backer is vital. Even with a disneystore.com receipt, how do you know the pin you are getting is that same one purchased by that receipt? This is a pretty high dollar pin with known counterfeits....I would insist on backer card if I were trying to get this pin.

Did this pin come on a special backer or just a disney shopping backer? I know it isn't hard to find the backers alone for sale, and would not be hard to attach any pin to the backer and say it is on the original. In fact, I've seen that multiple times in Disneyland and on eBay. If you knew the SKU of the pin and it matched the backer card, I guess the more legit the pin is. Since this is a hard to find pin with the potential for scrappers, perhaps you two should use a moderator? I remember this being done on Dizpins, though I haven't heard of it being done since.

Of course someone who has a legit pin could put a fake on the legit card to sell or trade.

Besides, if someone can counterfeit a pin, they probably can counterfeit a receipt.

When I first started collecting, I never kept the backer card. I just stuck the pin in my pin bag-so that is a tough question. Since there are known scrappers, voice your concern-if they huff and puff-you might be dealing with the bad wolf.

Do you think people switch more expensive pins to a cheaper backer? To pay lower prices in the store?

For me, if it's an older LE pin that has counterfeits out, a DA or DS pin, or a pin that came with a special card back/package, then I would need to get that backing for me to consider the trade.

It was something I had seen with traders, not in the store (although that opens up a whole new can of worms!!!! Do people really do that??!?! AGH!) I've taken a look at their pins and they point out that their LE pin is on its original card. It is a pin that I own and purchased in the park years before and I know what backer card it came on, and it did not come on the card they have it on.

::shrug::

I go with my instincts. If it's an older trader or trusted seller, and it seems like it makes sense that they might have an older pin, then I don't need a card. I *prefer* it, but I'm not going to pass up the chance to get a Wanted pin just because the card is gone.

I check references, ask if something seems off, and examine it once I get it, and I've only ever had one arrive that was a counterfeit (like, high-end counterfeit, not a scrapper). And she fixed that, so no harm, no foul.

In your case, it's a little tougher, because I have heard that those Jessicas look pretty darn good. Do you know anyone near you who bought one from ds.com themselves, so when it arrived you could check it against the "for sure" deal?
