Fish out of water trying to figure out this crazy world of yours. We are brand new to trading and started it up on our last trip over Spring Break. Now I'm preparing for the 4th of July trip down there and looking for some more knowledge because honestly, I know nothing.

I've loaded up some info in the bio here for a little background, have their "collections" on pinpics and had them pick out wants as well. I tried sending out a bunch of trade requests based on matches, but haven't heard any response. I assume that is typical, but have no clue. At this point, I throwing things up against the wall and seeing what sticks.

Sorry for the longwinded hello, but figured I could try to squeeze out a few pointers in the meantime as well.

In my opinion, the problem with the Trade Assist matches is that it just shows matches, without factoring in whether or not the potential trade(s) might be fair and balanced. The same problem exists with filling out the Trade Assists; you can just fill out the pins that you are offering in exchange for the pins you want to receive, and unless *you* take the time to make sure the trades are fair and balanced, there is no system guaranteeing that they will be. And if you are accidentally sending out unbalanced trades, that could account for why you aren't getting any responses.

My suggestion is to invest some time and become familiar with the pins you want to trade for and trade away (values, trade statistics, etc). Then instead of just 'throwing things at the wall and hope something sticks,' spend time putting together your requests, making sure you consider them fair and balanced. No guarantees that this will work as some people just won't respond no matter what (unless they want to trade), but you may end up getting better results.

Hello, and welcome! I agree with dancecats that the trade function on pinpics can be problematic, since people value their pins differently and sometimes are only interested in trading away a pin in extreme circumstances. The forums here can be a good resource for finding out who wants what, and what people are willing to trade for certain pins. Additionally, if you're looking to flesh out your traders, you can purchase pins here from experienced DizPin members and build up your references on PinPics (to which a lot of traders refer when you ask to trade with them.) I am sure you'll get the hang of things very soon! I look forward to trading with you in the future :wavey:
 
Thanks for the welcomes. This pin thing is nuts ... should've taken blue pill! I hit the bay relatively hard to try and get my feet wet, but the wife is about to hit me with the hose, so I'm going to try and slow up a bit. (guess I shouldn't tell her about our adult lanyards that I bought yesterday ... All this buying for the kids, makes me want to start my own!)

Today I'm probably going to put together displays of what I have for the kids so far, so everyone can get a good chuckle!
 
Welcome, I'm a real newbie to pins, too, and you're right about it being crazy. There's so much to learn about. Most of what my son is looking for doesn't appear to be too difficult, thankfully, but this whole business of finding out what's a fair trade and what isn't is definitely going to take some time to figure out. Good luck with building up your own lanyards, too! We did the same thing when we were at Disney last week; we got a lanyard for our son but then as he was building it up and having so much fun trading around, we wanted to join in too. It's something fun for us to do together, as long as I can figure out this trading stuff 🙂 Good luck!
