Loose or broken pin posts

My husband, who builds model rockets, fixes them for me. Here's how he does it.

First, he carefully investigates the post and the pin, to determine the orientation in which the post was originally attached to the pin, because he wants to replace the end of the post in the exact same orientation (not rotated at a different degree).

Second, he puts a small drop of super glue on a piece of paper, then dips the broken end of the post into the glue, lightly wetting only the flat surface of the end of the post.

Third, he places the glue-dipped broken end of the post onto the pin in the orientation he determined in the first step.

Fourth, he puts a tiny drop of "speed-up" drying solution on the pin where the post meets the pin. (The speed-up solution is in a spray bottle, but he doesn't spray it because he doesn't want to harm the surface of the pin. He extracts a small drop from the bottle using the pipette-like end of the spray tube that usually sits inside the bottle.)

Fifth, I praise him.

J-B Weld. Only had one break, pirate and princess party one, mixed it up, dabed the post in it, put the post back and waited till it would no fall off. It showes it's been fixed, but it's going into a shadow box when I can finish getting them all.

I personally used to use Crazy Glue and while it is very strong, it is only strong in a pull typr direction.
It is difficult to explain but since then I have started to re-solder them back into place. Done correctly, there are no marks.
You need a very hot gun and I use silver solder.

After this, if you technically tried to bend it, it will bend, that is how strong it is back on where crazy glue at this angle and pressure will still snap / break the bond.

Also, if in your pin book you use Coroplast (corrugated plastic) once you put the pin in, if and when you try to remove it, many times it will snap and stay in the book. Not with solder, its like or better than new.

I have an LE 100 where one of the double posts actually broke off. Just the pin part. Does anyone know how to get the rest of the post part off and where I can get another one to put on short of destroying another pin somehow? I just hate to lose an LE100. I would gladly give a pin to someone that would be able to fix it for me. Thanks for any and all thoughts on this

Thank you all for the wonderful post fixing ideas! I received an LE from Japan this week in a non-bubble mailer, and the pin post had broken off the pin in transit. There's no way I'm complaining with all that's happened in Japan, but I needed a good idea on how to get the little post back on the pin. I think soldering is the answer! :)

Use a post off a scrapper. That way you aren't breaking a good pin.

Broken Posts

Hi,

My friend has handed me down some of her collection since she quit collecting Disney Pins and I noticed some of her pins have broken posts. I want to know what do people do with broken posts beside gluing them back on? I was wondering if there anyone I can give them to or donate them? They are still in beautiful condition expect only the post is broken off.

Please let me know. Thank you

Marcia

I had one pin that the post broke off of. I picked up some Rare Earth Magnets and Green Stuff from the hobby shop. Green stuff is a two part apoxy, you mix the yellow and blue half till it turns green. When dry it become rock solid.

Anyhow I used the green stuff to attach the magnets to the back of the pin and turned it into a refrigerator magnet.

You can also pick up cheap pins from the thirst store and use their pin backs with IN Weld to fix them! Or let me know which ones they are I might be interested in them! :)

What about lose pin posts? I have a pin with a very lose pin post but idk if I want to break it and then glue it back on. Or do you guys think it's a better idea to do that?

also, prevention.....

generally speaking a post comes loose or breaks because it is dull, or is handled a bit rough at some point. Always be sure your pressing strait and firm, but gentle when inserting into board or book. If a pin post consistantly doesnt want to press through, check first to make sure it is not hitting a pin post on the reverse side of the board or book, and then perhaps sharpen the bugger a tiny bit. Dull posts are the #1 cause for a broken post.

I have the same question. I have never had a break, but I have a few pins on which the post is loose. What is the best way to fix them?

Just want to throw this out there..if any one plans on trading repaired pins, you need to let the other trader know it's been repaired/fixed.
