Ok unique situation with an auction
Everyone thanks for your opinions i was worried i was being "difficult" in thinking that it should not be extended and I did not want to offend the auctioneer as this person is 100% legit and a very very nice trader. The auctioneer did email me telling me that they were emailing the moderators to request the auction to be extended and i just didnt think it was the right thing to do. So I guess I am in a holding pattern until the moderators make a ruling. I Just want to make clear the auctioneer is 100%legit with the server being down those last 5 minutes as I was watching the thread and was prepared to up my bid in case of additional bids and i got kicked out as well I will keep you posted on what the powers that be decide.

No extensions. Rules are rules, plain and simple. The server going down is a fact of life in DPF, get used to it.
As for a previous mention that eBay has changed auctions by having a closing time instead of auctions going on until no one is willing to go any higher, clearly this individual has never participated in a "silent" auction where bidders write their bids, one after another, on a sheet of paper until a pre-ordained time ends the auction and the last bid written down is the winner. This is not a new concept and not one instigated by eBay. These are tantamount to silent auctions as there is no auctioneer and no bidding paddles, so it is perfectly viable to have a closing time set down, and that time is not one to be "extended" to benefit the seller. If there were an auctioneer in place running the show, he could determine if people missed a chance to bid, but when the seller is running their own show, there is no way they should be allowed to extend the auction in an attempt to benefit themselves. Pick the best bid you had and live with it. Don't feel the need for greed, just man up and take it as it comes. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Play the game the way everyone else does and don't try to change the rules just because you don't like the outcome! :pooh:

In this situation, I (as an auctioneer) would be unconcerned with the last 5 minutes. If it was 5 hours... that's different, but 5 minutes is NOT going to really change any bids.

If the Auctioneer receives numerous PM's from people saying they missed the bidding due to the server crash, the auctioneer can submit those PM's to the MOD as proof that the auction needs to be re-run or continued. That would solve the concern about people just "saying" the bids were missed.

Okay last update the auctioning person told me that the Moderators gave them permission to extend the auction however the person decided not to do this and declare me the winner. Which is great for me. BUT leaves me wondering what the moderators are thinking on this. Aren't they the ones who set the rules? If they are going to change the rules and allow exceptions to them then in my humble opinion it needs to be across the board or NOT at all which is what I believe is the best thing. I do have to thank the person auctioning as they stood by the rules after asking me how I felt which they didn't have to do.

I would like to know which mod made this determination. That goes against everything I have heard.

I would like to know who granted permission for an extension as well. The last I said was that an extension might be possible since we have been having so many server problems BUT it was up for negotiation and administrator approval - NOTHING had been decided. A formal decision for this (no extension because it would send a bad precedent, sorry) would have been sent had the forum not erupted in drama and this issue not been eclipsed by it.

Whenever I see pink writing I just assume the thread is closed lol

I'd like to know which mod gave permission too. I had an auction last weekend that I said lasted until 1 PM EST on Sunday forgetting that we changed to EDT on Sunday. Well, I kept it open until 2 PM EDT which equals 1 PM EST and got fussed at by a moderator (who also stated we gained an hour instead of losing one last weekend when time changed) for extending my auction.

No mod gave permission. I told Connor in a PM that one mod had said they thought it would be okay but that they needed to check with the other mods. This has now been blown WAY out of proportion and never should have been taken public. It was my auction. I had several people comment that they wish they could have bid. I asked a mod, they said possibly. I asked Connor's opinion because it mattered to me and then I decided not to do an extension. This was no mod's fault and there no reason for drama. The situation has been resolved. Let's get back to trading! :)

SwinginKitten...that makes sense. I know I've gotten those messages after an auction, too and I HATE knowing that someone else would have liked to bid and that someone was disappointed. Disappointing people is probably the only thing I don't like about doing auctions.

If the forum is Crashing consistently at the end of your auction and the leader board changes then I think it is only fair to give the person who was #1 before the crashing a chance to answer the new bid. And if they regain the top spot, only the #2 can bid again, and so on. Like a sudden death overtime situation. Server crashes suck. But I don't think a new bidder from out of nowhere can complain, only someone who had the top spot and lost it during a server crashing session.

I didn't intend to make any drama, it just went against what I had seen elsewhere.

Now back to our previously scheduled trading. :wiggle:

Not sure if mods can help. An auction closed with me in the lead. I assumed I'd won. I patiently waited to be contacted. When I was never contacted, I PM'd the person. Their answer was that they changed their mind after the auction closed. I contacted the mods. Got an answer that they'd look into it and that was the last I'd ever heard of it. Hence, I still have no Cinderella PODM.

No extensions, period. And eBay has nothing to do with this. Every auction enterprise has the right to set their own rules beforehand. I have made plans to bid before it gets too close to end time just because of the possibility of server crash, even though it puts me at a disadvantage.

Give them a week to get it figured out and them pm them again.

okay now I'm a bit confused this is part of the pm I got from the auctioneer regarding the extension
"Hey Connor! I am not offended at all! I was surprised, but not offended! No worries, I am pretty easy going. Before I emailed you about this, I had already gotten the go ahead from one of the mods to extend my auction but I wanted to know your opinion first because it matters to me"

now to me that sounded like the moderators had approved this maybe I misunderstood but I don't believe so I started this thread just to have a discussion on a problem motto get drama going I apologize to swing kitten if that is whathashappened As it was never my intention at this point I'm ready just to say whatever and let it go if the mods want to let her re auction the pin okay I don't want to lose friends over this

This is an interesting point. I agree there should be no extensions for a 5 minute outage, but I have occasionally been unable to got on DPF because of server issues, but then when I do get back on, I see that other people have posted during the time I was having problems.

...so what do you do if one bidder had access but another didn't? (assuming that both were previous bidders in that auction and the mods can confirm that there were in fact server issues during the relevant period)
