Hey there princes and princesses!

So I decided to treat myself before my birthday to a pin bag. It's a big turning point in a pin trader's life when their collections reaches pin bag capacity.

I was wondering a few things:
I've seen cardboard in these bags, why do folks insert them?
Backing cards or no backing cards?
How can I further protect the pins inside my bag?
Where can I buy the bags they use at DSF when you buy new pins

Honestly I can say I love my pin bag!!

I use cork board in mine and some folks say the reason is holding the pins better and plus you don't have to keep reaching in the pocket to take the back on and off if say you need too

Another thing I don't use my backing cards behind the pins. My husband does he likes it but I think it just takes too much room

As far as protecting I use plastic card holders or cut to fit ziploc bags and wrap it around the pin. I know you can buy ziploc bags but I have no idea where to get the DSF ones. Good luck on that :) hope this helps

Hey there princess!

These are some sweet tips! Where can I buy the cork boards? Zip-Lock bags, OF COURSE! How did that not cross my mind? wow. lol
 
Well I bought my cork boards at Walmart. There is a pack of maybe 5 squares and I just basically used a exacto knife and cut to fit. Another tip I can give you is to duck tape the cork board. One thing I hated more than anything was the way it crumbled. Cork board is messy so if your a clean freak like me then I would do that. You can also buy corkboard at target too as well.

Oh I see! so you're saying to duck tape the entire board?
 
Yeah that's what I do or at least tape around the edges. Your pin book will look cleaner that way. See I got lazy and just cut squares to fit. My husband got all into it. He cut a middle part for the Velcro and cut everything to fit. He even used black duck tape to match hah now I'm envious.

You actually dodged a bullet and didn't even realize it, the bag you show is notorious for falling apart. I have heard several tales of very poor quality on this particular one.
 
I put rectangles of coroplast (corrugated plastic) in my bag. It made SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE OMG. It was so much easier to put the pins in neatly, in neat rows, when I wasn't constantly reaching inside the fabric fumbling to get the pin backs on while the fabric rumpled all around. Plus the backs would sometimes fall off.

I'm told that over a long period of time, cork dries out and has less grip on the pins, but I don't know if that's true. Coroplast does have a really good grip though; I've made all my display boards out of it after the first one of foam core didn't work as well. (Foam core holds the pins okay but it warps.)

I've bought coroplast via Amazon, but then I found that my local Display & Costume has it in their craft section. It's also pretty easy to cut, either with scissors (if you just need a straight line) or a good Xacto knife (if you do shaped display boards like I do).

Oh for your other question-- I keep the backing cards with the pins in my trading bag because it's just easier. For the pins on my display boards, I take the cards off and put them in a box with a sticky note, sorted by pin number; that way if I ever do trade them, I can give the card to the person, since I learned some people care about that.

I don't know about the ziploc bags, but I've had people tell me *not* to use those, because it makes people think I got it from one of those ebay scrapper lots.
 
Since you've read the pros and cons for cork, I'll skip those.


Coroplast is good and strong. Some folks report breaking backs on it, though.
foam core works well, but apparently warps. It is also thin enough in one layer that the pin will stick through. It can also work loose.
Some people use foam core and affix sheet rubber on either side, that makes it thick enough that the points don't stick through and it seems to hold the pins better.

No solution is perfect, it seems to depend on which negatives bother you the most.

Edit: Oh, and if you use the 3x4" ziplock bags, they are good for protecting the pin on the card. They are usually in the bead section of stores.
 
I should've been more specific-- the foam core warped when I glued fabric to it; it was the moisture in the glue that did it. Which makes sense, since it's foam with a layer of paper on either side.

Probably if I had set it under something flat and heavy while the glue dried, it would have prevented warping. As it was I had to nail a board to the back of it to straighten it out again (it's my Mad Hatter display board).
 
I also use the plastic and have never had a problem, and really appreciate how it cuts down on the fumbling when attaching and removing pins. I use it in my trade bag and it is light weight enough to not make the bag too heavy to carry via shoulder strap.
I get my corrugated plastic at Home Depot, or other home improvement store, where they sell pre-printed yard sale signs etc. I have used the pre-printed signs cut up to fit in the pockets, but they also offer blank yard signs (with a little metal stand) that you can use if you are concerned that the printing will show through (I haven't had that problem though).
