wondering how good of an idea this could be.... just a knowledge base for pins. Release dates/locations/scrapper info/pin history, etc...

seems almost redundant with some of the info on pinpics, but it might help with lesser-known or more high-profile pins and grails.

It's an idea i played around with a long while back (among other pin and non-pin-related ideas), but I was just thinking about it the other day and thought i'd revisit the idea with the forum.

I think it'd be great, although possibly a massive undertaking to get it going. But it'd be nice to be able to add info we find out about them, and to ask questions and have the answers all in one place.

This is the biggest barrier -- just the sheer number of pins out there, and all the information. and yes, it'd be a huge undertaking, but having a knowledgebase for pins would be a good place to start.

I think it's a really great idea! Maybe there can also be wiki sections explaining a little bit about trading online and at the parks, and/or pages that discuss pin terms.

It would definitely be a big undertaking but I'm sure many would be willing to help if you needed any (I know I would be happy to) The effort would surely be well worth it in the end!

I would love to take it on...I need something to do to relieve the stress and my health issues right now...we could do a pkging class too

I like that idea. I'd use it. Have big pics of both the front and back of a pin. Have the stats down the right. Release date, sku, pinpics number, LE size, etc. Have a little background info on the pin, what it represents. Maybe a list for similar pins, or pins from the same set. Then a scrapper section and what to look for, with pics of scrappers.

I definitely agree. For me, it is definitely hard to see the small pictures on Pin Pics and compare them to my pin.

I'm not sure how this would be different than re-creating PinPics? (Although I'm all for MORE information being available!)
this is also some of my concern in pursuing a project like this.

It does seem like re-inventing the wheel, and if one were to crowd-source information (as is the case in a wiki), efforts would be better served in creating another/new pin database.

however, if the wiki is kept up to date and (relevant and trustworthy) information is added, and the wiki is actively managed and curated, it can end up being a valuable resource for research/information, even if it doesn't facilitate trading (as pinpics does.)

For each pin? That will take forever.

Can you not add the stuff to PinPics?

SKU number information would be a huge help for me as I'm trying to match up backer cards with the pins in my collection. I matched as many as I could using PinPics, but I have a big pile that I have absolutely no idea what they go to!

I like the idea of a wiki, or really just even having an open forum/discussion with each pin. Pins and their information change through time, and it's always good to have the current relevant information along with all the history that went along with it. Deleting things without a trace is always hard to deal with, and wikis are a great resource for past information.

As I understand it, you can add new pins, but they may or may not be deleted. You can't add info to existing pins except in the form of comments, which also may or may not be deleted. (For instance, I had a lot of trouble with a search where the keywords in the Pinpics entry were misspelled so they didn't come up in the search. No way to change that as far as I can see.) And info that you add as comments just appears as a list of comments at the bottom. It'd be nice if the more detailed info we add-- scrapper detail, also "no this *isn't* a scrapper, it came to me from Disney.com that way" detail, and things like that-- could be in a bit more organized fashion than a list of comments.

Although, one thing you might want to do is wait until the new pinpics launches before deciding. We've heard talk about what they're going to add, but what we've heard probably isn't complete. It may be that the new site addresses things you'd want a wiki to address.

If you were to do this, would you follow Pinpics' number system but add way more information about scrappers and such? I am just trying to get a feel of what it would be like.

I agree wth Grim about info changing all the time. I am seeing more and more DSF and WDI pins from east coast sellers as well as sellers abroad. They all claim that the pins was obtained via trade in the parks. When was the last time anyone found a WDI hat on a CM lanyard?? I must be going to the wrong parks

opinions?

Would this be the type of information I gave you about my Grail? Unless you did not know, one may trade or over trade for a pin that is the wrong one? More specific rather than general information about a pin listed on Pinpics?

Back in the day when I added pins to Pinpics, I added Pinpic pin 67923 but not the current picture. I had a bit more description than it does now but I tried to be very detailed. Being able to only upload 1 photo it has to be the front of the pin. It would be nice to have 2 uploads per pin to show the back side also. Sort of like the Jungle Cruise ride with the back side of water. It's nice to know it's there but to be shown its there would be informative.

I'm all for more information being available and specifics about scrappers especially, but have to agree with the others on serious overlap with Pinpics. It will be interesting to see the new Pinpics and see if that fills the gaps. However, all of that said I do like this idea. I'd like it if lots of people could add details etc and discuss them etc

You can add the front and back by adding the pictures together into one picture but then it is really small. It seems though the pinpics mods have a way to add larger pics though. Perhaps their new website will have the ability to have more info. Back and front would be nice.
