We are working on an exciting new piece of software for pinpics. It is photo recognition software. You just take a picture of the pin and the software finds if it is in the system and if it is it tells you what it is.

So from now on we will only be accepting pictures for new listings and picture upgrades that have a solid black or white background on them. No backer cards will be allowed. Please also only use a solid white or black background, no pictures on jeans, bedspreads etc, even if they are black or white. The easiest way is to use a sheet of printer paper.

Keep in mind if you are listing pins from flyers they have to also use these parameters or they will not be approved.

We hope you will like this new feature as it is only a small taste of what is to come.

If no backer cards are allowed, how does this affect things like Booster, lanyard sets, mystery boxes, Hidden Mickey pouches, boxed and framed sets? Basically, the listings for items that are more than just an individual pin. Will they still be photographed with their packaging?

Perhaps they could have multiple pictures? Make the "main" picture with a white or black backgrounds, and make the secondary pictures those with the actual backer cards? Just thinking out loud...

Of course frame sets we won't ask you to break them up, but everything else can be taken off of the cards and photographed on a black or white background.

But not while you are standing in a store at Disney or room hopping at DFC conventions or Epcot event trade tables wondering what something is. They sort of frown on removing things from packaging to take a photo on a white/black background in order to bring up stats on Pinpics.

I guess it's not expected that people would want to use photo recognition before they become the actual owner?

So question - could it be run with the existing photos in the database? I've been coming across a good number of duplicate pins in the database lately. Not just things like PP, AP, and the such, but full on duplicate everyday pins.

Sounds like this will be super useful! But I am also curious about the issues previous posts have addressed.

Did you get this software from the guy that did DPP? He had it working from what I had seen. The turn off from his 'business model' was that it was going to be subscription based (you had to pay a monthly fee to use it, or a pay-per-scan idea), is the hope/plan for this to be free? Or maybe a one-time app purchase price, but the subscription model wasn't really loved by many people...

It will be free.

As a 'on the original card' collector, this bums me out as no one will know what the card should look like after some point in time. While I understand for certain LEs and rack/core pins, that come on the black plastic or paper cards, as long as the SKU is there, it's a no brainer. But for decorative cards (Flower and Garden, Not So Scary, ect), knowing what the card should look like, will be lost.

All the more reason to get the SKU#'s on the listings.

This sounds great, especially to use in the Parks whenever you're not sure when trading

This is what I would look forward to using. When at home at the computer, I can always search PinPics, but in the parks, I have a hard time using my phone to find pins...

That would be great, but so many of the listings don't have SKUs and some others, only partials (which are really messed up). So, unless someone is willing to put that info in, again, the card information (looks), will be lost.

Will this be new pins or ALL pins, as in, are you going to re-photo all the pins in the inventory? I can't imagine that being done.

But if there's going to be requirements for NEW pins, can they include the BACKS, too? That would be really helpful.
