Okay, I suppose that I'm just slow or clueless or something, and perhaps I've even missed this being discussed here already, but when did Disney start putting serial numbers on their pins?

I received a package yesterday and two of the limited edition pins had serial numbers on them. One is the Sorcerer Mickey and Yen Sid from the Valliant and Villainous series, and the other is the cast member Goofy's 80th Birthday pin (see pictures below). Both the pin and the card have matching numbers (incentive to keep cards I guess).

Does anyone know when this started and how wide spread it is so far?

 
I think it is something new. I've purchased some pins in Disneyland with serial numbers on them, so its not just you. Though I do wonder why they started this.
 
It's been at least a year since they started doing this. It's not all pins, and sometimes the serial number is only printed on the card not the pin. I think it is something a particular factory does, since they don't shop up on all pins. When they first started showing up, people wondered if it was an anti counterfeiting thing.
 

I thought the same thing when it first started. Unfortunately, it turned out not be the case. These numbers are not unique to pins and seem to be part of a larger merchandise system Disney is using now.
 
I wrote about this prior. I am always at DSF and asked Patty about it. She said back then that Disney contracted with another pin maker and DSF was the first to use their factory. There is where the seriel numbers started. The number us unique to the release not the pin. I assume that X number backing card with the number match the pin on it. It's also thought that no backing card to that pin could be extra made??? Who knows. DSF fakes pop up here and there but very few. I only know of 4 to date. One of those were never released by DSF and only know of 1 of that pin to exist.

So in conclusion, I guess that factory passed the test and have more Park pins that they can make???

I sure wish that more pins came from the Factory that makes DLRP pins with the LE stated on the pin. (XX/XXX)!!!!

The first pin I bought that I noticed had the serial number was the Piece of Alderaan history pin from the Sci-Fi Academy releases. That was July 9th, 2011. It seems they were still perfecting their madness as I remember some pins that had a serials printed on the backer, some on both, and some on just the pin. Also, the serials are all the same for a specific pin. The new Cars Land pins from the various travel groups and the Visa card have the serial stamped in the back. The Pin Trader Delight pins at DSF have had them inked on the pin now for a while too.

The numbering of pins would be nice if it became more common. However, its not just from that one factory, I'm sure most if not all the factories Disney uses can do that if it is requested. I think the reason we do not see more of it is because it adds to the cost of making the pins but is not something that Disney can mark up the price for. Too bad.
 


An interesting concept. At DSF they receive 6 extra pins above the edition size in case something is wrong with one of the original 150 or 300. How would those get stamped? I would think they would be a little more valuable as they were extras. DSF always keeps the edition size as posted, so the extras not used are put into a "scrap" book. If you see one that is bad, they put that in the scrapbook and give you another. I could see people asking for another just to get the over the limit stamping. I don't think they would let that happen and they would not do the extras and you get what you get.
 

Sounds like artist proofs. Anything like that would be number 000/XXX.
 
I heard about this a while back. They are going to start doing this more and more to prevent people from trading for a pin and then sticking it just any old card and taking in for a refund. They figured out they have been getting killed on this so.....this is an easy way to put an end to it. Numbers don't match? No refund.
 
I vaguely remember that the reason the DLRP limited edition pins are numbered xxx/XXX is because there is a law or requirement in France that limited merchandise be numbered and show what number in the sequence it is ... such as 004 of 100, etc. I can't remember why I think that's the reason DLRP LE pins are numbered that way but I do think the regulations in France have something to do with it. This was asked about waaaay back when Disneyland Paris was a new park. But then, what do I know, lol! Personally I like the feature ... makes the pins seem a bit more "works of art". I believe several of the disneystore.com pins from last year (110th Legacy series ???) also had the "product code" number stamped on both the pin and card

Not a bother. I haven't seen it on Pin Pics yet. It is the cast member exclusive Goofy's 80th Birthday pin. It just came out about 10 days ago, and my friend at WDW picked it up for me. It's an edition of 1500, so I'm guessing they will be around to trade fairly soon.
