Basically, someone pays for you to go to the event and gets all the pins they want at cost + tax + shipping. They also get any free gifts (which is usually a welcome gift and an exit gift). You get to trade. I sponsored someone once. It was okay, but I wouldn't do it again, because I could have bought the pins I wanted for just a little extra after the event was done (hype died out pretty quickly)
