Question about Pin Cleaning

Hey guys!

So I recently got a huge grail off the bay and I was super excited! The only problem is that the pin REEKS of cigarette smoke! And I mean reeks. I had to immediately throw away the package, the bubblewrap (which I usually re-use), and replace the rubber pin backs because the smell was just overpowering. >.< I'm afraid to put it in the case because I don't want everything in it to get the smell, and then it hits me every time I open it.

I've left the pin out to air (never thought I'd type that...) for about a week now and it's still pretty stinky... Any suggestions on how to clean it or get the smell out? I've heard sunning it (putting it in the direct sunlight) works, but because the pin has some vinyl elements and it's a little older (2005), I'm afraid of sun damage. :/

Put it in a ziploc with a dryer sheet, and leave it for about a month.

Brilliant idea!

I would actually use baking soda.

Open up a box of baking soda and put the pin into it. If it's too large for the box, get a larger box, put a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the box, put the pin on top, and then cover the entire pin with more baking soda.

I've never thought that a pin could stink so bad! Terribly sorry to hear that your grail ended up being that way! Looks like you've got some good advice here though! Let us know how it turns out later!

Moth balls in a box will do the job.In about a week it will smell like your closet...

You could also put in a box next to a bowl of white vinegar to try to get the smell out. But I think the baking soda method may be the best bet.

I never thought about this :S my family smokes, though I don't and I keep my pins in non-smoking rooms this worried me a little, especially as I don't think I'd be able to tell if they smelt. I'm gonna be super careful now!

I think this was a very prolonged exposure and some serious serious smoking. Like the envelope the bubble wrap, all if it was super strong. I also noticed that the rubber mickey head pin backs are what retained the smell the most. So getting rid of those helped.

Also, the dryer sheet is working perfectly. we didn't have any baking soda, but I'm sure that would have worked very well.
