I am so sad. I was in the middle of making a trade for my grail. The trade was done. All was left was sending the pins. Well the girl sends me a message that the top broke. I am waiting for a picture or more info from the girl. I really wanted this pin and was so happy. Now IDK what to do. Please help. Advice? Can pins be fixed?

(Quote)I wanted to let you know, but when I took Ariel off the board and was attaching it to a card, the top back piece broke off. I don't have a solder to fix it, or E6000. Would you still want to trade and attempt to fix it yourself? I wanted to inform you in case you wanted to cancel the trade before sending your pins out.

UPDATE!!!

Well I thought long and hard about it. I really wanted it. And since It was important to me I was just going to get my husband to glue it and keep it displayed. Well I offered her half of our deal. She backed out and decided to get greedy. Saying she will fix it and someone will want to give more. That it is still valuable. So now I am really crushed. Not only did it brake.... I wont get it at all because of someone being greedy.

I would not trade for it anymore. It's no fault of anyone's that the pin broke, but you could have a harder time trying to fix it let alone might not be able too and end up without the pins you traded and a broken or worse pin ):

I'm sorry this happened..

If I were in the same situation I'd drop the trade. I personally don't care about broken pins and the value does drop when something is broken. You can fix it but if you're not even sure I doubt if the trade is worth it. I guess it just depends whether you really want this and what you're trading.

If a pin is broken or has been fixed it loses value, they would be hard pressed to trade or sell it for the same value as a intact one. If it will stay in your collection and you don't mind then you should try to negotiate for a better deal. If you ever want to trade or sell it in the future you would probably loose on that.

So sorry, I know how disappointing a failed trade can be :(

I wouldn't trade for it. I would be forever bothered by the fact that it is damaged. I think it won't satisfy. As it isn't as great/perfect/awesome as it should be. But this is just my opinion.

here is the pin. she just send a pic. I was going to trade a stitch marti gras and Jessica and Rodger rabbit in front of the castle.

If it were me, and I probably am the minority in this opinion, I'd see if you could renegotiate the trade terms, because, like someone said, they're going to have a VERY hard time trading it for teh same "value" of what it would be if it were in perfect condition. If it's just going in the permanent collection and thats it, then I personally, don't see an issue with trying to fix it... but I would absolutely change what you trade for it. Plus, if they're a good/nice trader, I feel like they'd understand that... they still get something for it, you get your grail and won't feel like you gave up too many pins for one that isn't in perfect condition. Hope that makes sense.

Off topic but.

I also want to remind some here. that there is no such thing as a Perfect condition pin. there is such a thing as near mint but never Mint/Perfect,
Unless it went into a bag once it was made and you wore gloves every time you touch it.. just sayin'

If you're not near 100% happy then deny the trade.. otherwise if it's something you'll keep then work hard on fixing it
Again if you aint happy then it wont do you any good..

+1

If you're not going to be happy with it (if you can fix it or not), then don't. If you think you will "regret" trading or not trading, then you need to weigh that. How hard was it to find a trade like this? Can you change the trade slightly now that it is damaged/broken?

The main thing is - if you can be patient - yes, it may take days, months, years - then don't trade. Wait and be patient and a trade will happen eventually. If you think this will be your only/final trade for that pin and it's a pin you can't live without and you need it now, then trade. You have to weigh your feelings.

Based on the quote I though perhaps the top of the pin (like her head/flower area) was damaged in some way. Since it is just he back post and the front of the pin is still perfect, if it were me I would still consider trading for it but would consider these things:

1) Will the trader accept a modified trade since unfortunately the pin is devalued by being broken?
2) Can I or someone I can get fix it?
3) How difficult will it be for me to find this pin again, not broken or otherwise?
4) Will it bother me always knowing the pin is broken?

It is ultimately your call. If the break doesn't bother you that much and you can renegotiate a more level trade for the defect, perhaps go for it. If it will forever bother you, then I'd pass.

If it is your "grail" and you are going to keep it, see if she is willing to work with you on the trade some to compensate for the broken pin and if so and it doesn't bother you, I vote for get it. Years ago people wore their "grails" and pin cards weren't always saved. Pins are far from perfect even being sold directly from Disney before touching any trader hands. If the pin makes you happy and you fix the back and keep it, then that is what matters. :)

Side thought... I wonder how many pin backs get fixed without people knowing.

Here are my thoughts on it. First, I would go to a jewelry store and ask them if they would be able to help you fix it and what it would cost you. (Take some pins as an example of what you are talking about) Once you have that information. I would recontact the trader and find out if they are still willing to trade. Give them the information on what it will cost you to fix the pin professionally. (You might even have to "ruin" a second pin to get the right post to make your grail look perfect but it would be worth that in my opinion if it is truly a grail for you). Then let them know you are willing to subtract the amount that the repair would cost you and trade the equivalent. Sometimes it is worth more to me to invest a little more for a grail than it might be worth at the time. If that is the case with you, you will still have some negotiation room on the trade. I am of the opinion that the person with the pin has the ultimate power in a trade because they can always keep the pin regardless of the offer. It mostly depends on how much you are willing to give up!

Oh wow. So she's fixing it and just trading it with someone else? I don't think I'd appreciate getting a pin that was once damaged and fixed. Bit greedy, yeah. I'm sorry they backed away. I really hope you'll find this pin from another person. I'll be sure to look out for it and think of you.

Thank you. I am upset about the whole thing. But she could have been nicer about it, after she broke it and after we worked out a trade. The whole thing makes me sick with how greedy she wanted to be.
I feel the same way I wouldn't want a damaged pin and not know until I get it. With the way she is being she probably won't even tell the next person.
Thank you guys for the advice and help. I really appreciate this.

That's what I wondered with my initial post... how many pins get fixed without people knowing?

I have a Japan Zero pin that the back came off of while it was on the card. Since this pin is in my collection and will stay in my collection, I just fixed it. It doesn't bother me I had to fix this pin and doesn't take away from how much I like it. If I was to trade/sell (which I won't :D) I would disclose the repair as it seems that is important to some that seek a more "perfect" condition pin and also, I think just for safety purposes to let someone know in case they plan on wearing the pin.

I think the repaired pin back and how if effects the value of the pin is really subjective. Perhaps it isn't as important to the lady you were trading with that she didn't see it as so much of a loss in value to make it half the trade? Either way, I am sorry the deal went sour and it turned out as it did :(. I do believe that the pins will come around and you will get what you are seeking though. :)

Thank you guys so much for your kindness. I hope I can find it. I was going to get it and fix it myself and enjoy it but she turned greedy and said she wanted more. I just didn't think it was right to trade 2 unbroken good pins for a broken one. So I offered one of them and she wanted more.
I agree I wonder how many has been fixed and no one knows about. I think it should be told. Maybe the person don't care and maybe they do. Who knows maybe I wasn't ment to have it yet. I have been trying to trade for it for about a year now. That is the 2nd time I came close to having it. But I will keep looking for it. I have not given up yet.

sorry to hear about the pin. This is one of those times were you really can see that what a pin is worth is up to each different trader. If it was a pin that I wanted more than and other pin and hard to find again. I would just make the trade and be happy with the pin even if I cant fix it. It may also seem that I was trying to low ball the other trader if I try to now back out or lower the trade due to something that was not any ones fault. I have a NBC pin that ha on post broke. I still like it as much as if it had both post. The pin is for my collection and would never be sold or traded, so to me it would be just as good with no post as long as the font is ok. After all it is the front that I display and look at.
