I have been collecting pins for 10 yrs but have recently gotten addicted and was wondering if anyone suggestns for storing them? I have all mine on lanyards and they're getting a bit heavy.

If you want to look at them, pin binders (I make my own) are a nice, easy way to store your pins.

I keep mine on a cork board at my apartment. I have two lanyards of pins thumb-tacked to the cork board too, because I found them in storage like that from when I was a kid and wanted to leave them the way they were. If I was interested in trading them I'd put them in a pin bag. Lanyards are awkward to carry with you, since they're heavy like you said and they bang around too much.

There are a number of ways that individuals store their pins. Corkboards and pin bags are the most common. Some of the more artistic create fantastic backgrounds for the pins and frame them.

I keep mine wrapped in tape to prevent scratches
I usually dont like them on lanyards because they hit against each other.
Pin books and boxes with some protection are great though

I use three storage techniques. I'm not too big on lanyards because I don't go to the park that often and if I go I rarely bring my pins.

1 pin books for the pins I'm most likely gonna keep a while, they're stored and I won't need them any time soon (but being in a pin book, they're ready if someone wants to see them to trade so I guess they're just my traders)
2 I frame my favourite collection pieces, as interior for my room. my non-favourites are in a pin book until I can figure out what to do with them (most likely frame everything though)
3 I have a little basket on my desk with pins that need some kind of action soon (e.g. I'm ordering the EU Sleeping Beauty release of the stained glass pins for someone in USA and I keep them in the basket until I have to ship them, or I have the pins that I'm currently selling in the basket as well)

Not a very big fan of frames, so I generally put my favorites-rarest-most expensive in bubble wrap, and the others in a book for easy access...

I just bought some thick foam poster board from Walmart with a thin cork cover on one side and it works very well for my pins! Two 16" by 20" for under ten bucks- can't beat that for value. Micheals craft stores have a nice assortment of shadow boxes and they always have an active 40% off coupon, this week they have their shadow boxes at 50% off which is an incredible deal! I like to have lanyards ready to go to show off my favorite characters, or for the holidays, but most of my pins are too big for a lanyard or too precious, so I display them in my home! Hope everyone's ideas help!

Probably not practical, but I have a lot of sturdy 3"x5" ziplock bags that I bought in bulk for a previous hobby (miniatures), so I typically use them to keep individual pins that aren't in a pin book or on a lanyard. In turn, I keep these bags in a tupperware-type of storage container. It's helpful to find what I'm looking for because of the see-through-it-ness.
