I was just wondering...I was looking at a particular DA 100 pin and noticed there are 10 trading and only 14 wanting.

In cases like this, is it insulting to send out some trade requests with some LE/older rack pins? I've seen this particular pin listed with a $24 BIN and I was curious to what everyone else thinks. Do people really expect another DA 100 pin when the wants vs trading is that low?

I would not be insulted with a TA like that. If the pin is going for around $25 and you offered me pins that were old, no longer available except via trade or secondary market buying, I might do it for say two older open rack pins being that it is an LE100.

It's not insulting as long as you are polite about it. And it's certainly not insulting as long as the more-than-100-LE pin's LE is also low (no more than 250 or 300) and has a good trade/want ratio. If the LE is higher than that, then the trade/want ratio should be REALLY good, and the older rack pin should have an excellent trade/want ratio.

Setting aside the question of insult, the success of the trade really depends on which more-than-100-LE or older rack pin you are offering, and it depends on what those 10 "trading people" want and what the 14 "wanting people" are willing to trade away. In order to be competitive, you have to offer pins in the same ballpark as the wanting people are offering. It also depends in part on the character: if the character on the LE 100 is more popular (in general) than on the more-than-100-LE, then the trade is less likely.

It's actually the 10th Anniversary Aladdin pin (17819), so definitely not one of the more popular characters. I also always add a note to my TA requests (although as it's been said before, those are often easily missed) that I'm looking to open up a dialogue or trade multiples.

I'm horrible judging the older rack pins trade value haha, mine came from framed sets (20th and 25th anniversary) that I broke up to trade separately.
 
I am with Bronco on that. As long as the second market values are a fair match, I would not be offended.

Some characters are way more popular than others. Currently, I am trying to get Pin 47954: DLR - Halloween 2006 - Tinker Bell as a Witch and although it is an OE pin, I have seen it sell on Ebay $25-$30 auction style. So, a pin like that can easily match up to some less desired LE pins imo.
 
^^ I agree with you Merryweather. I typically consider 4 things: wanting/trading ratio, 2nd market value, a pins' desirability factor, and then there is a motivational factor also - how much I want the pin I'm trading for. 🙂
 
That's one thing that annoys me about pin trading since I started about 5 months ago...there arw WAY too many factors to consider when making trades. What I might consider a fair trade, other might laugh at. It get frustrating at times. I'm always scared about offending the other person, but at the same time I may try anyway cause it might be something they REALLY want even tho it means nothing to me.

You sound like me when I started! I didn't start trading until a few members started PM'ing me first. If I see something I'm interested in on another traders list I'll shoot them a PM and inquire what they're looking for for that specific pin. This has helped me gauge what I'm looking for and the worth.

I'm a pretty laid back trader - for the most part if it's on my wants and you offer it, I will take it. Unless it's the spammed hidden mickey trade requests for my LE 250 pins (which believe me, are not the best traders or most wanted...but still I'd like to at least get a rack pin out of it!)
 
Sounds fair to me. I've traded low LE pins for higher LE. They were similar in current market value, and the pin I received had a better ratio than the pin I traded for.

I too try to take into account the ratios before sending out a trade request -- most of which still get no response 🙁 You just never know what another trader is really looking for.

As for the specific pin you mentioned, lunarbasket, I traded a higher LE for it in a request that originated from the other trader. I was such a newbie at the time, I actually turned the offer down at first! Imagine, turning down an LE 100 of the main character you collect... Anyway, I wisened up, and when we finally made the trade, we were both very happy.

I think it's a lovely pin, and I hope you get it!
 
I think this is a good subject.
Here is an example. Many people like to trade edition size to edition size and I have always said that is not the right way to do it because every pin regardless of edition size may have a different value.

Here is an example. From the 1st series of DLR POH they are all LE1000's, but do they all have the same value? Certainly not. Certain characters command more value than others. There are some older rack pins that can be woth 100's of dollars.

The trades wants ratio's are an indication of, well, demand and the more demand and less supply will make it more valuable. I have a few pins that have 0 trading and 40 - 100 wanting and they are rack pins (older dalmatians pins) as well as some Star Wars Pins. So to me, if not a single person is trading and all these people wanting, this is a valuable pin.

I think you are fair in offering any pin that is close in value regardless of edition size. There are plenty of LE100 pins that got routinely for $10.00 because they are NOT in demand at all. Everyone should know that Size is not the only indicator and demand plays a big role.....
 
I dont think that you should have a value set to a pin. I feel that if a pin is LE then you should trade for the same or lower edition size. It is really hard to get the pins that you want when people think the pin is worth so much to them. I have seen many trades that were not fair to the ones that were being traded. Many because the trader was new or the person trading knew what they were getting and the others didn't know what they had. I do agree with the LE for LE. I also agree that its up to the person. But people need to be fair too. I have very few le pins. But I have about 30 hidden mickeys though. Most people dont want to trade with me. So its kind of a you have to be rich to get the ones you want sport.

Hey There.
This is not a slam in any way but this is the very point we are making. you said

So check this out. You have an LE100 pin and I have an LE50 pin. Because mine is a lower edition you would trade for it (of course if it is something you collect.) NOW, your LE100 PIN is worth $200.00 and my LE50 pin is worth $75.00 but you would still make this trade because you dont look at the value, only edition size?

There are 12 pins in this set, all LE1000 but like the tiki room is selling for $10.00 and the Mansion is still at like $75.00 BIN

Edition size is not a valid indicator. You have to consider value and supply and demand. If there are 500 people trading and 10 wanting versus 10 trading and 500 wanting, it certainly makes a difference in the value.
As we have all said before, there are many things that determine a pins value regardless of trade value or ca$h value but not just edition size.

Just wondering where can I find the POH Tiki room pin for $10? I would love me some.

The pins I have seen on Ebay have crazy asking prices currently, $74.95 and up.

A few weeks ago we were at the NFFC or now I think its called disneyana convention and I was buying pins that routinely go on eBay for $30.00+ for $5.00
Tiki Room POH was $10.00 and they had Autopia for $30.00 and Haunted for $45.00
People who were there know the exact room I am talking about too.
 
Wow, thanks for all the info guys! Ive been doing this since the beginning of the year and had no idea that all of that was taken into consideration. I guess I have either been lucky to get the values approximately even or just had some very generous ppl to trade with me. I will definitely be looking at things differently now.

ITA! This is me all over place. I am not good at all with trade negotiations. Most of my trades have come from people offering me the trade and me accepting. Sometimes, during the negotiating, it stops being fun and it just drags. No fun. I'm still learning, though, and I agree with what people are saying here. I try to take edition size, retail, market, and trade/wants into account. It's a lot to figure out especially if you have a larger multi pin trade you are working on though.

Back onto the OP's question, yes I think it is fair for you to offer an LE or older rack pin for the low LE pin taking into account the trades/wants ratio and market value of the pin you are offering. There are some older pins that have a much higher market value than some lower LE pins. There are also some higher LE pins that are worth a lot more as well based on market value and demand.
 
I wish pin pics would add a feature to include a second pin when sending requests via TA. Sometimes I send out for multiple pins for 1 hoping someone would accept with the idea of a 2 for 1 pin trade but even with the open msg box on the bottom of the TA page it still doesnt relay that thought via email to the reciever.

I know alot of you who has gotten a TA email from Grumpy74 sorry but majority of the time I am trying to offer 2 for 1 pins you just don't know it.
