I'm hoping that someone out there has this pin and can describe the back. In particular, does the "printed" backstamp look like it could rub off over time?

It's an older pin. The person who first added it to Pinpics said it was not marked with the Disney copyright, and no backstamp was mentioned. Another person later commented that it has a printed, rather than stamped, backstamp.

I have one that looks perfect on the front, very detailed and thickly-enamelled, but it has no backstamp. The back of mine is smooth silver metal, with one pin post and one nub behind the Ariel side of the pin, and two small triangle-shaped indents behind the rock side of the pin.

This pin was of unknown origin, in 2000 when it was added to Pinpics. It was probably something that came out for the release of the movie in 1989. Pins of that vintage aren't counterfeited. Disney pin collecting wasn't that big then, molds are long, long gone, and today there are so many more "easier" pins to counterfeit. I don't know about this particular pin, or backstamp, but I have other pins of the vintage, so a printed backstamp that rubbed off is possible. I think there were also European pins produced without copyright (maybe bootleg?) or I wonder about sometimes if copyrights were ever put on the packaging.

I dont know about this particular pin but I find the older pins especially tend to degrade in quality, I wouldnt be suprised if a backstamp rubbed off one. I hope others are able to compare for you.

Thanks for all your comments. I also tend to doubt that a pin that old has been faked, but I wanted some second opinions before I list it as a trader.

Bretu: I'd love to hear what the back of yours looks like.
