Ok so at Disneyanna yesterday I bought three boxes of the new villians mystery hat boxes and when I finally got a chance to look at them today I have a question - when the heck did the hats start getting a border???? Also my Prince John is nice and glossy but then my Shere Kahn/Kaa is matte . . . . and on both pins the hat cutouts on the back do not go to the edge of the pin. I am so annoyed that pins just can't stay conistent. Soon there will be so many varients no one will be able to tell what is real . . .
 
I'm guess the Chinese factory did that so that their scrappers will appear more legitimate:( Just a thought.
 
Yes I noticed that too . . . its just so crazy. If someone had brought me WDI pins with borders I would have told them they for sure got scammed!!! and if you look its not the same cut outs as normal - different color and not as deep of an impression. I just dont know how we are ever supposed to REALLY know anymore . . . .
 
The Beauty & the Beast Marquee pin that came out Friday has a border too, but it's different than the Ice Cream Sign pin's borders. What the ?? If I didnt buy these direct from DSF, I'd be suspicious. Also the Ice Cream Sign has the serial number on the back of the pin itself, while the marquee does not.
 
I totally agree. I happen to purchase a couple boxes of the Cars Mystery Pins... and one box was the completer pin... Its dull, lines in the pain, shotty sanding on the edges. I would DEFINITELY think this was scrap had I traded with someone online or off of a lanyard.

I also looked at my Pin Traders Delight pins from Soda Fountain... I have the Tinkerbell with the glitter cherry sundae... That pin has a border. I don't recall if I purchased it directly from them or if I traded for it. But either way... How does one tell if they have a real or fake pin now? All my other pin trader delights do not have a border. **sigh**

The issue... How do I go and trade these pins now? I would totally think it was a scrapper if I received it. So, how does one explain this inconsitancy to a possible trader?

WDI has had this issue for a while now...I have a few of the pressed pennies from the firts series that have the border issue and from then on, same thing with most...At this point I just stick with reliable sources and the scrapper updates when people get mailings from China...Off topic a bit, Caligirlucr, did the alice cards have any borders from the mystery boxes? I know there are scrapped versions (I got one already, lol) but I have one with correct colors and an inconsistent border, nothing as bad as the one I know for certain is fake/scrapped.
 
Hmmm I dont remember off hand if they have borders but i have a chaser and an AP verison in my trader book right now - i will check and let u know late tonight or tomorrow :0)

The thing is I can totally see someone getting these pins in trade and posting on pinpics that they have borders and are therefore fake and then everyone believing that.
 
That really bites. How about adding a comment to the pins on Pin Pics and submitting a photo of the back? I guess we all need to be discerning when choosing to trade or buy second-hand.
 
I asked about this a while ago at the DSF, and the response was that they use three different factories in China, some of which have production processes that result in borders and some that don't. They apparently use the different factories for different kinds of pins (glitter, Pin on Pin, etc.), and I'd imagine that the factories compete on pricing, too.

I think all that can be done is to add comments to the Pinpics listings, as other posters suggested. Honestly, I'm less concerned these days about counterfeits of newer stuff, since it doesn't happen all that often. New releases just aren't worth counterfeiting like they used to be.

This is true for both WDI and DSF pins. And it's been a loooooooooong while. You're quite new to this topic as it's been discussed here on DPF several times already. Sorry, somehow that sounds rude, but you know where I'm coming from ;) I'm trying to remember if WDI has ever had a pin with the hats running off the edge, but I think they started doing patterned borders on the back of pins in the summer of O-Pin house, and I distinctly remember those WDI releases having the borders. It's just another way that pin collectors/traders need to educate themselves thoroughly. Buyer/Trader beware!

I'll need to see the glossy-ness of the pins in person to really comment on those, there could be a few different answers.
