Does anyone out there remember what or which pins were the first problem scrappers out there?

I thought it was one of the very first lanyard series pins from 2002, but I couldn't remember which pin exactly.

This is where things get fuzzy, just for arguments sake here's my terminology.

Scrapper / Counterfeit - Factory in china makes an obvious fake
Overrun / Sample - The left over pins from an official run ordered by Disney, boxed up and sold years later by the factories directly to pin collectors.
Bootleg - Using a Disney character and making a completely new pin.
Fantasy - The hint of a Disney character without crossing the counterfeit line.

The first wave was Overrun / Sample pins, these were the older rack and hard to find items, Disney Auctions LE 100's and "prototype" items. These lasted for a while. It was almost the same stuff that Disney was putting on the pin boards for the smmer festivals. After those seemed to run their course the scrappers started to appear. My first recollection of being warned about certain pins were the
DLR - 2007 Hotel Hidden Mickey Snowflake Collection.

Lanyard Pins didn't start till the summer pin festival in 2003.

Well, there are two groups of pins. The first counterfeits I remember being discussed were on the highly desirable side. Haunted Mansion E-ticket, Disneyland POM (which I have posted a comment about here and on Pinpics), Wet Paint, Maleficent Dragon from the Diva Event, and some others I can't remember the details of: desirable Haunted Mansion and Pirates pins. Those were so far out of my price range, that I didn't pay as close attention as I should have when people talked about possible fakes. I also remember ages ago, someone on the DIS mentioning there were counterfeits of Pin 1178. I just remembered that one recently, when I picked one up off of Ebay. My pin has a distinct curve to it, and for the life of me I can't remember what the details were about the fake, but it might have been the curve. But that conversation happened so long ago that I'm not sure anyone is left from the DIS to remember it, and there isn't a notice on Pinpics. I really wish Dizpins had used a message board system that had a longer archive of posts. There are some on the DIS, but they had a major server crash and changed servers so nothing before April 2001.

As for the lanyard pins, the first one I remember being a problem was the Donald USA pin, as it seemed to be the most sought after pin from the original group. I remember the explosion of scrappers, and when everyone started talking about the shear volume happened with the Global Lanyard Series. Counterfeits were made a long time ago of the kites from DL Series 2.5, and it seems like that series has been revisited in terms of scrappers and Series 2, as suddenly a lot of newer people have them for trade and I can only assume they came via lanyards at the parks.

Is this one of the Mansion pins you were thinking of?

I always thought this wa the original scrapper/fake/overrun/scrapper ever made. I believe it has a warning from 2007 but I remember the DLR pin community had seen the fakes of it way earlier than that. I think even pin traders knew about it even before Dizpins/pinpics were even created.
Pin 17: DLR - Disneyland 2000 Logo (Mickey Mouse)

Scrapper or counterfeit? The first counterfeit I remember was Pin 263: WDW - Haunted Mansion E-Ticket and the first "scrapper" was a Lanyard or Hidden Mickey but I'm not sure which one it was.

Thank you for the definitions Josh...that is a help!

Now, I know there have been knock-off pins since the 1980s. People would just go an make Mickey mouse designs and sell them in swap meets..so you have an entire other type there. Plus there were those counterfiet "Sponsor" pins from Europe. The big, giant colorful designs with strange cross-overs like McDonald's, Coca-Cola etc. Granted there were also legit Sponsor pins as well at that time.

Earliest stuff I recall are the Diva Dragons outside the Box, the Small World Clockface Cast Award pin, and the yes, the Gold Shield. Along with the E Ticket Mansion from World. I will say the Dead End was thought bad many years later and that one may be in debate as it could have been a manufacturing deviation. (granted aren't they all).

I tried (and failed) to edit my post to add Adam. Thank you Adam. Thank you Josh for reminding me to thank Adam again.

With all my accolades for Adam, some of the Disneyland folk will point to this as PROOF that I have lost my mind.

Yep Pin 17 is one of the old originals. In fact the person behind it was also behind the Hometown Holidays 1998 set (anyone remember when all of those were $100+ pins) and the Disney Gallery Nightmare set and a few others I can't seem to think of off the top of my head. We are talking about 10+ years ago.

It's okay, I forgot it too. That's why it's too bad that so much of this information has been lost to the internet graveyard, and so many old timers who would remember have dropped out of the hobby. Too much information for our brains to hold. If I had a time machine, I would go back and make a list. And I'm sure there were pins I wasn't aware of, not living in SoCal or Fl and being privy to all the things that would have been talked about in pin lines and events.

Well, a lesser known fact was that Disney tried to combat problem children pins in the very beginning. For whatever reason, they started to legitimize fake ones from the 1980s by saying "yes, that is ours."

Disney also tried to combat the fakes by making better versions - remember Stitch with a Frog was released as a counterfiet and then Disney made one for themselves almost identical. On Pinpics, the Counterfiet comes first in chronological order.

My first known scrapper was WDW Cast Lanyard Collection 4 – Magic Kingdom Parking Sign (Sleepy) must off been early 2006. I was caught up in the Disney Magic and never even realised it till we got back to the room and Kelli pointed out at least 10 pins that were different from the same pin she had traded for. Seems I had been following around a trader with a bag full off scrappers.

I bought this pin six months ago on Ebay. Pin 45980: Disney Auctions - Masterpiece Series 2006
(Stitch)
The pin was slightly smaller than the real version and were the hologram is on the back had been gouged out and a flat hologram placed in the hole. I sent it back and got a refund. The seller was selling 10 or more off this pin. Just noticed there is no mention off scraper alert on this pin. I got taken for $125 others sold for as little as $50.00

Okay..does anyone else remember the "It's Just a Pile of Leaves" Story?

Since the two people are gone..think it is safe to tell. Back in 2000, a woman named Candi used to make bad pins. She wasn't trying to be a counterfeiter -but she was frustrated by the bad designs made by Disney. Her early stuff was GORGEOUS...the Jessica Square (Pinpics 26350) the various Stitch pins..Jessica Halloween (Pinpics 24992).

Well, this was at a time when Dizpins endorsed the trading, buying and selling of these bad pins. Actually, the Dizpins board got a cut from Candi for the sales. Then, the pins went crazy on Ebay -I mean Stitch in a Cruiser hit like $150! Others sold for crazy prices. Well, the Dizpins Boards asked Candi for a bigger Cut. Well, Candi refused - because she was the one taking the risk and doing all the work for the pins.

So, Dizpins then decides that the pins by Candi (and others) are bad and bans them from sale and trade on the boards. But then, Joette (Then owner of Dizpins) designs a pin that is Topiary Stitch (see Pinpics 22475). So, Candi writes on the boards that Joette's pins are just in violation of copyright as the ones she made because they were a knock-off of that known Cast Lanyard Topiary Series. But Joette replies..no, mine is "Just a Pile of Leaves."

Well, Candi finds Joette to be hypocritical, so she designs the following pin: Pinpics 27018. The backstamp reads: "It's Just a Pile of Leaves."

When the Dizpins wars heated up, the alliances would each wear the Stitch pin for the side they were on.

Now THAT was Informative, and funny  LoL...

YES I remember that as well..I actually own both pins..LOL!!but Candi made a cool Figment one too
I have it as well...Pin 9522: Bootleg Pin - I Love Pin Trading 2002 (Purple Dragon)
then I have this one:
Pin 17958: Bootleg - Christmas Tinker Bell
Look at this one:
Pin 38363: Bootleg - Continuing the Tradition Do not have this one

YES I liked Candi...she was awesome
