Ive been watching the auction page for a while now. Does it seem like it to anyone else that no one participates in the auctions any longer? I'm I imaging it? Tons still sale stuff but not auction. Just curious if something happened that I wasn't aware of. ???????????

I've considered doing one but since it's in the rules that you have to accept any bid you run the risk of having to accept a lopsided trade . Many people here would only offer something of equivalent value but there's always that chance . Selling or trading is much easier as there's no way anyone can force you to accept less than you value your pin at .

^^ This exactly. Plus, I think most people prefer either trading directly (knowing what they are going to get) or selling to buy what they want.

I love auctions. I think they're fun to watch and participate in, but sadly it looks like that a lot of people are more interested in buying/selling now than they are in any sort of trading. Unless someone auctions out a pin which a lot of people on the site have on their wants, then the auction probably won't get a lot of attention.

Edit: I also second what speedwaystar1 has said

I love watching the auctions and I participate when it is something I want. Unfortunately I have very specific wants.

I really loved the auctions too. I did see from time to time unequal pins being offered for something really good. I wonder..... Just thinking out loud if the rules can be adjusted to protect the person auctioning their valuable pin? Not sure what would work but I do see the fear of having to give up a nice LE for possibly a rack pin. It's not fair to the person who auctions it off. If anyone has any ideas to how that can be prevented, I would like to hear. It's a shame something so fun is sadly and slowly coming to an end.

I'm not doing auctions because of the combination of several things. 1) You have to choose a winner, even if the offer is completely unfair (I can understand this rule, though, without this it'd just be another trading thread), 2) people aren't active on the auction boards anymore, maybe 5 people will bid if you have a good pin, 3) some people are unfair with their bids and most people don't take into account what the auctioner collects.

I really do understand #1, I mean, that's the point of an auction. If you take that away, it's not an auction anymore. I don't really think there's something to be done about it. I think it'd be great to have some kind of "only bid what they collect" rule, though.

I've been thinking about auctioning my UP BT, but if trading doesn't work I wouldn't know why auctioning would. Basically because of #3, I collect Tangled and I'm 100% sure people will bid something else.

You know, sitting idly on the boards won't do anything to change that. (And I don't mean you specifically, pin2pin1)

I apologize if I'm pushing anyone's buttons, but I was always told that if you want something fixed, standing by the toolbox won't do anything. And many people on this site don't seem to be interested in trading very much right now. Which is a shame, because it's what I thought the purpose of this forum was.

If there are people who are so concerned about the future of the auctions, then just watching it fall isn't going to do anything. You have to actually participate in them. To go back to what I was saying earlier, people just seem to be interested in buying/selling/getting the best deal for the pins they want, and the pins they want only. Yes, like OlafOlaf said, there is a big risk in putting up your pin for auction. But that's part of the fun. And if you're not going to take a risk every once in awhile in this hobby, where's the fun?

In fact, I will go ahead and dare anyone that's reading this to go and outbid me on the two auctions I've bid on. So what if it's a pin that's not in your collection? You can always trade it again. And if you're concerned about the loss you might get by paying postage for trades, let me make one thing clear: this is a hobby in which you will most always certainly lose money. May as well have fun while doing it.

I've thought about doing an auction or two, but my wants list is so small, I'm almost guaranteed to be offered nothing that's on it. :) I know there are other reasons to auction pins than checking off wants-list pins, but it still gives me pause. It's the truth.

Auctions can be great if you have a lot of pins on your wants list, or a large number of collection themes. I think some of those people have maybe lost interest, but it doesn't mean new people can't step up.

Very true, but sometimes auctions are nice to do just for the fun of it! It' never know what might turn up.

I posted an auction, so let's get cracking! Let's give the auction threads more life.

Alright OlafOlaf! Way to go!

Its human nature to want what you want that will never change what a shame. Please do not die auctions...

The only other thing I can add is that a great number of traders don't have access to the parks , I for example live in the UK , so my traders are the few LE pins I can get from the UK Disney website and since I work full-time and can't access the site until after the most popular releases sell out so not even too many of them , so I rarely have anything anyone else wants .
I can still trade as even OE DLP pins have some value to the right collector you just need to be patient , but short of bidding a large number of these in an auction , I'd stand no chance of winning and I could generally just buy the pin for less . If I had access to DSF or even a park for LE pins I'm sure I'd be entering much more often as I'd have a better range of traders , maybe after my WDW trip I'll be in a better position to actually stand a chance of winning one :)

I LOVE the auctions and I love holding them.

I don't bid much because i hardly have anything anyone wants...but I think with the advent of people buying/selling more, trading less there's been less auctions.

BUT very rarely do I ever walk away from my auctions unsatisfied. More people are just the opposite of what speedwaystar said....they have more traders then they know what to do with. So alot of people would rather throw 12 pins at somthing hoping someone will want them then pay another 50 or whatever dollars (whatever the pin is worth obviously) to get that pin and sit on those traders again...or at least in my experience.

Sure sometimes i end up with a bucket full of traders for the nice pin i auctioned but at the same time it's hard for me to go to the parks anymore or anything so i welcome the fresh traders!!

I really don't think auctions are coming to an end.

I *love* auctions! I think they're fun and exciting, and I love seeing what people come up with. I understand the fear of getting a lopsided trade, but I think that happens much more rarely than you'd expect. Most people on DPF are reasonable and aren't jerks about it, in my experience.

Also, that's where choosing what to auction comes in. I try to keep my auctions to things that are recent and/or really popular (like when I got hold of some designer couples). I've seen auctions on here that aren't getting many bids, and it's largely because they just aren't highly wanted pins. OE pins, booster pins, even things that are rare but just don't have as broad an appeal aren't going to do as well. Fab 5 will never as well as Tangled, for example, even if the Fab 5 is an LE 100 or something. Just because it's rare doesn't mean it's going to get bids; people have to want it, and the people who want it have to actually *have* pins worth bidding. (So auctioning a highly wanted 7-pin DSF set might also be a bad idea, because maybe not enough people have that many high-value traders that they can bid.)

I do not favor changing the rules at all just to keep auctions going. There was a lot of discussion about the auction rules last year or so. I think they're fine. Running an auction means taking a risk; for me, that's part of the excitement. You just make it a calculated risk by choosing wisely what to auction.

I just checked my PTDB and it turns out I have 88 traders . Although out of them maybe 25 or so might be of interest to others , the rest are mainly going to be CM traders or for zaps . Maybe someone is looking for one of them , I'll check out the auctions here :)

Go for it! Worst case scenario, you don't win, and can try again another day!

Wow! Thanks everyone for the responses. I've just been on the auction page and folks are engaging again. It's exciting. I have only a hand full of traders right now but I'm participating also. I think I'll take something from my own collection to auction. So check it out.

I have a couple ideas to try out too for an auction, but I won't right now since the board is hoppin. ;D

And you guys have wonderful bids and auctions! Best of luck to all!

I love auctions! I've bid in a few, won once, and really enjoyed the experience. I've never held one though. I think most people lean towards auctioning when they have a very hot ticket item, something VHTF and popular, because then you get a bidding war and often get amazing pins while the winner gets a grail. If it's just every day pins, people usually trade to have more control and not get stuck with pins they don't want, even if the trade value may be fair. I think because the pin trading community is going through so many changes, people are holding onto their grails more and riding it out so we are seeing less of them in circulation. Most older grails people don't want to let go for the newer, trendier pins since the trends will likely change.

Plus, trading looks to be taking a back seat to buying/selling with new traders coming in and gravitating towards eBay and social media and because it tends to be safer, when, dealing with strangers instead of a community like DPF, you can file a claim about stolen money, not so much with a bad trade. Hopefully the community aspect comes back into the hobby so trades can happen more. And I hope we get more trading events to actually go to in the future :D Some Facebook groups do seem to be replicating a sort of community feeling.

It is actually really nice to see how a post concerned about auctions has shaken up the forum and got everyone engaged in the auctions again :- )
I have yet to participate because my traders are few and far between but I hope to hold my first ever auction soon.. I can just never decide which pin to put for auction!! I love the mystery of it though. It is all in good fun.

I feel like they also died down a bit too because no BIIIIIIG thing has been out in a while. Those usually get everyone in there...

Not like my little derpy art auction xD

I think the auctions are fun - I've bid in several, won a couple (few?), and hosted my first one back in December. Will probably try another soon, but I think I have an idea for a fun low cost trading game to try first....Just have to finish sorting through my traders from our Xmas trip, so I can get my list of what I still have, whats new, and whats gone up to date!
