Why I do not like Pinpics requests

Ok, so I am sure everyone has their own story and if you don't, you will.

Share it here;

I have had many of these stories, but thought I would share the latest. I actually would love to send a sarcastic comment back to them, but it is just not me.

I received this request today:

(Name removed) offers huertajv this pin: Pin 62104 (Disney Shopping.com - Vintage Poster Series - Marie (Error))
In return for one of these pins:
Pin 81131 (WDW - Love is Magical - Love is Heartbreaking Box Set)

Now just to give you a little FYI........62104 was $12.95 new and has a trading ratio of 14 trading and 27 wanting. This pin is an LE of 250.

My pin set, 81131, was $59.95 new and has a trading ratio of 5 trading and 21 wanting. This set is an LE of 250.

Do we see the problem here??? It is not even the trade ratio or the LE, but the cost factor.

There was no note, and their email is private so I cannot even review how long they have been a pin trader. They have two pages of trading pins, but nothing outstanding, that I could tell. 2 pages is a lot though, and they do not look like pins that came off of Ebay in lots.

Anyway, that is my gripe for the day, and I think I will continue to post lame requests as they come. Let's see who has the worst request!!!!!

77659 has a trade ratio of 11 trading 46 wanting and is LE 250.

67921 has a trade ratio of 7 trading 123 wanting and is LE 100.

Again no note. They do have pins that would be somewhat comparable, but not this one.

At least, these people gave you enough dignity to offer LE pins no matter how lame.

Most of us get offers giving Hidden Mickey pins for LE250 pins too. Keep a glass of water handy to cool off when you see those ones

Recently someone asked me to give all 3 - 85165,85166, 85167 in return for 81937, LOL!

I already deleted them, but next time I am going to review thier feedback and see how long they have been trading, to see if they are sharks or just learning.

I don't send out many TA, but if I do and a pin isn't a fair trade I usually add in the comment section to please make a counter-offer.

And even if they trades are way off, the worst you can say is no thanks. I'd much rather have my TA on rather than off just in case, but if it's bothersome then just turn it off.


I used to get this offer for a high LE park pin every single day a bit over a year or two ago for my jumbo Up pin. They never missed a beat lol


And when I was a newbie, I can only imagine some of the funky trade requests I sent out :X I'm sure there were some doozies.

I've sent some out too, but as a newbie I'm still trying to figure out what is fair for trading :/ and my options are slim now as i've traded a lot on here but For my Bridies I would trade and or pay $... I just need to figure out what fair is? Originally I send out trade requests in hope to get any kind of reply so we can work out a counter offer that seems fair to the other person too, but I think most people might not think that way. idk :/ ...I would never expect the trade to be anything but fair from my end, but as I said I'm new so communication as to why it is unfair and what would be a fair trade is helpfull <3 <3 <3

That said, ANYONE wanna Trade??? Especially for Orange Birdies??? LoL <3

I'm still trying to figue out the trading too, but I always put in a note letting people know that I'm new at this and just to tell me if I don't make a good offer. That way I can learn and perhaps counter when possible. People are a lot more understanding when you let them know up front that you don't know what the heck your doing.

Putting a note is perfect! That is what I do sometimes, in the event the pin they want is not close to what they are trading. This way we could work out a multiple trade.

I always suggest that if you are requesting a trade and are not sure about the fairness, to always put a note, letting someone know you would like a counter offer or would like to discuss. This is a great idea.

Remember sometimes people do not get their emails on a daily basis, so it could take a little longer for a reply, or that person may just not want to trade for that pin right then. They may be in the middle of a huge trade, for a grail or something, and does not want to deal with another trade right then.

Just keep trying and put a note to see if they would like to counter on your offer. The pin may not mean anything to them, and they may be willing to trade for fair multiples.

OK I'm to somewhat defend requests for people's hidden mickey offers for your LE X pin.

First of all, though, if you get a hidden mickey offer from someone who you *know* is a seasoned trader, then yes, I agree it's a puzzling request.

Otherwise, the request could be coming from a new trader, in which you cannot blame them, at least in my opinion.

When I first started pin trading, I had no knowledge of the online community, where a plethora of pin guides & information awaited. All I was taught was that Hidden Mickey's were rare and hot (at this time, Pooh Silhouettes and Patriotic Stars barely came out). I mean, I always thought what else could lanyard park hoppers be looking for on CM lanyards? Hidden Mickeys were the crown jewels! I didn't know about DA, DS, WDI, DSF, etc. pins - all I knew about were pins available in the park, and that Hidden Mickeys were always at the top of the heap, and I figure I should be giving them strong trade value.

Eventually I found out about Pinpics.com and its built-in e-mail trade requests. Now I figured out myself that ratios *can* be a useful way to determine the trade value of both sides' pins. So I gathered up my HM haul, checked each pin out on Pinpics, and saw that the ratios for these new HMs were amazing! I'm sure you guys have observed that the initial ratios for newly released HMs are excellent. Anyways, here's the first pin I pulled up from my HM haul: Silhouette Pooh, which had 5 Trading, 95 Wanting (remember, newly released). Now here is a pin I want: Pin 54862: DisneyShopping.com - Father's Day 2007 Portrait Series - The Sultan, which had 8 people Trading, 40 Wanting. It doesn't take a math wiz to know that, by the ratios only, my pin had better "stats". Forget that the Sultan pin was an LE 250, because I did not know if HMs were LE, limited release, etc., and forget the values of the pin, because I did not think to look up prices on eBay. BAM! I send out the request.

All I'm saying is, before you question the unfair request, consider that stories and like mine affected my decision to send out these types of requests, consider they may go only by ratios (which we all know we shouldn't do to ultimately determine the value), and consider that the newbie has not researched as much as you yet. Check out their trades list first, and determine if they could be new (many of us can tell just by a quick glance). They are new trader mistakes, simple as that.

As a newbie, I sent out ridiculous requests. At that time, though, with my lack of knowledge as to how to determine a pin value with so many factors involved, how was I supposed to know what a fair request is or not? I had my newly released Hidden Mickeys, which were touted as the new hot pins, and that's exactly what I thought I had! :lol:

I suppose my rant is pointed more towards seasoned traders who receive such requests, only to reply with a good scolding. It's uncalled for.

I hear you Jon, we have all been thru the same mill, LOL! At least I have.

Totally agree with Bricklayer, my main complaint is for those who have been trading a long time and know better. Not starters. You can always tell by their trades that they are newbie's and I don;t fault them. Truly been there and done that.

My issue is with the people who have "Experience" in trading and are trying to scam a newbie, or even someone like myself.

There are some Hidden Mickey's that might actually warrant an LE pin, depending on the pins involved.

Hopefully I did not offend a newbie or someone who is actually trying to trade fairly. :-(

I sent out some TA's over the weekend trying for some older wants. Nothing super rare, super expensive or extremely low edition. I offered some relatively low edition pins from DS.com boxed sets....granted, I know that those LE's are not high demand pins because lots of people have extras of them because they bought 5 or 6 boxes to try to find a certain pin....but realistically...they are all rather low editions...anywhere from 500 to 200 in some cases. So I sent out several requests offering several DS.com boxed set pins with edition sizes of between 300 & 1000. All of my LE's were released at least two years ago. One of the pins I requested was PP 347 Autopia pin....rack pin, original list price of $6, with wants trade ratio 24 trading and 25 wanting....clearly nothing extra demanding about it....although it is an older pin that isn't produced any longer.

I got a counter offer stating "Well I see you are willing to break up your sets....so I'd like to trade my pin for your pin 63652 Cheshire Baseball Mystery Set.

This was four days ago and I'm still fuming about it. 63652 is a LE 100 from a mystery set with 3 people trading and 82 people wanting....seriously...I know the Autopia pin is no longer in production and for a rack pin, there may not be a lot out there...but there are certainly more than 100....and way fewer than 82 people wanting it and more than 3 people trading it. This is a very experienced trader who sent this email and if I could figure out how to block my pinpics to where it didn't match to this person ever again, I'd be sure I didn't send any more TA's ...or receive any more.

This is just insulting. Like everyone else, I made a lot of strange offers when I was new and I still may send something that someone else feels is lopsided...it can happen because everyone views their pins different...but this one was so far over the line that I just get red in the face thinking about it.

I have one person who sends me a trade request every single day and it's not always for the same pins but it's quite ridiculous what they are offering. Anyway I finally added their name to my spam folder so now all their requests go directly there and I never read them anymore.

I guess I don't understand why anyone be offended by a trade offer. They are just pins afterall. I understand that some can be annoying but its nothing I would ever be insulted by.

I don't think you can judge the "fairness" of a trade by the LE size (as some LE 100's are not very desirable and some old rack pins are) nor can you judge by the wants/trades ratios. As bricklayer says, some pins wants VS. trades are way off.

Some people (including myself) don't trade based on ebay value or edition size etc...I trade based on what I like and enjoy so I have traded away many pins with lower edition sizes and high wants for pins that I wanted....because....crazy thought....I liked them more.

Desirability is in the eye of the collector, so why not send out requests and see what you get? And if you get some out-there request, just laugh to yourself and move on. No need to send back snarky responses etc...It is supposed to be a fun light hearted hobby. I delete about 15 requests a day that are pretty crazy.

I L-O-V-E pin trading, but they are just pieces of metal afterall. Nothing to get angry about.

OK, enough of my PSA "The More you Know"....(adam carolla fans out there?)

I hope none of those requests are ever from me...lol I know what (for the most part) is a fair trade or an unfair trade BUT when I am working on setting up requests I may go in and click a lot of pins that I would be willing to give up in a multi trade for what I am asking for. I feel like if I click more it gives me the opportunity to open up a chat about a possible trade. Now, sometimes I do go in and look through them and try to delete anything that just looks ridiculous but there are other times that I have set up so many requests that I just do not have time to make it through them all to delete the bad ones. I usually do have a note attached saying "counters welcome, have a look" or something like that as well. I hate for people to be getting my requests and thinking that I expect them to make a lopsided trade with me as that is not it at all. That being said I don't have a lot of hidden mickey or other crazy cheap pins so I don't really send out offers on those anyways. Unfortunately the pins I want and send out requests for are always harder to get pins with very few traders so I have to click all I can just to TRY and open up a conversation.

I tell you, I have sent out many requests when I just REALLY wanted something and would offer crazy good pins for the item and would never even get a reply. I think it is pointless sometimes but I keep trying...lol


SO for anyone who gets TA's from me PLEASE do not get mad if they look lopsided. I may have just not had the time to check them before they went out.


Here is my vent... I only ever get trade offers for about 5 different pins on my wants list (and my wants list is almost 600 items) and those are the 5 every single person sends offers for. It makes me not even want them anymore when I get that many requests for them but never get requests for anything different. Every day I hope to open up an email and actually have an offer of something I don't get offers for every day. I have gone in and removed a few of those from my wants b/c I was just that tired or getting them all the time...lol

I keep getting an offer of "all our matches" for a 6 pin LE 100 Stitch set. This person is a forum regular. Our matches? The stunning amount of 5 Hidden Mickeys, all from 2010!

The least I ask for is you have a look at what the pin originally went for. I keep getting offers of a $ 3 PWP of the current snap shots series for a $ 160 pin set or a $ 40 jumbo. I agree that some things are in the eye of the beholder. I've made the choice too to trade one of my LE 250 for a Hidden Mickey pin because my best friend wanted it so bad. But that downtrade was my choice. If someone is not even trying to get close to the face value when they make an offer then yes, I am insulted.

I usually leave a note saying that if they didn't like my offer to look at my others and let me know what they would want from my traders.

I totally agree Amy. When I send out trade requests, I always try to take into account the trade ratios, the limited edition value and the original cost of the pin, which is a feat in its self, but I am not always aware of what the current market value may be. So its very possible that I unwittingly offend people with my TRs. However, trading can be very time consuming, checking the emails received, checking references, checking someones trades and wants to see if an alternative can be suggested or a multi trade agreed. I think its very difficult to get the right balance in a trade request, so taking all that into consideration, I never over analyse a TR received.
