I was expecting 150 sets for sale or trade. But it doesn't look like it.
It's definitely not as innocent as that, unfortunately. No one is selling these pins at cost, even when that cost factors in the $275 admission fee. If you do the math, the at cost price for a Dark Tales pin, fee included, would be $91 each. And that's only if the seller bought one single set, meaning they have to split the full cost just 4 ways. If they bought all 12 pins - as I suspect most resellers did - it comes out to a mere $45 each.
The lowest DT pin for sale on eBay is Yzma, for $95 - fair enough, I suppose, if we're assuming the best case scenario of a single set being bought. The highest is $400 for Maleficent. And full sets of all 12 pins are in the $1,400 - $2,000 range, when the at cost price is just $540.
I'll look again this weekend when I have time about sets and singles for sale on eBay.
If checking completed auctions on eBay - you can utilize the site (http://sortsof.com) and it will show you the accepted offers as well.
I've been mulling about the over exaggerated resell pricing of pins for the past month. Not just with these new Dark Tale set, but the Villains Vault, the WDI sets, the D23 releases... I'm sure everyone has seen a pin released recently that would qualify for this.
I sincerely doubt the prices will come down. People go in with a set price idea and nothing will change their opinion. Every once in awhile you may come across a reasonable trader who sets the price low and lets the market decide the highest price they're willing to pay, but those are like 1 in 100 odds of happening and even when it does, the rest of the people trying to sell/trade the exact same pin are not swayed to believe their pin is worth less than what they have priced/valued it at.
Latest example that I know of is the LE 15 framed WDI Si & Am pin set. Original cost was $275. First eBay listing had it at $1700.00. I didn't watch many of those auctions but one seller had it listed for $1200 and I decided to watch it. A few weeks went by and it lowered to $1000, plenty of watchers, no buyer. Then it lowered to $899.00 with the same results. While it was listed, a different seller took the same set and listed it as an open auction at $100.00. The bidding war ended and sold somewhere around $550.00. The other seller with the $899.00 price? Yeah, it stills listed at that price, has been for weeks, hasn't changed, hasn't sold.
I used to think it was okay. I mean, who am I to tell a person what their pin is worth or valued at? It's not my pin and I don't know how they had to sell an organ to obtain it; or how it has so much emotional attachment because they bought it with their first boyfriend, the love of their life who turned to crime and cheating and now they hate the SOB and wish him to the fiery pits of Hades; or how it took them two hours to smuggle the pin out of CA through body orifices; or how many generations it has belonged in their family and the only reason they're selling it now is because of mafia affairs/drug habits/ divorce revenge. Whatever, I don't need these details to sway my value perception. But when I know a person paid $20 bucks for a pin less than five hours ago, bought over 20 pins and then tells me they can't sell one for less than $100? Yeah, I'm going to have to resort to name calling.
It's not like Disney is willing to fix this issue. I mean, they could and quite easily. The simple answer is to return to Disney Auctions and let the market decide the price. If Disney listed an LE 300 pin and was able to sell all three hundred pins at a price of $300 a piece that means there were truly 300 people willing to pay that price and have determined it's market value. There'd be no internet/server blocking because a million people tried to purchase the pins all at once, AKA the last Beloved Tales release. Everyone would have a fair shot to put forth a bid they'd be willing to pay to the original designer and you'd have a week to come and go, watch the auction and decide if the pin was what you really wanted (because how many times have you heard a seller say they bought the pin for $25, decided they didn't really like the design and now they're happy to sell it to you for $60/80/100 two days later?). I'm okay with Disney being the opportunistic rodent, not so much with other traders/collectors who use the hobby as a means for extra income because they live close by and can price gouge their fellow collectors.
I miss Disney Auctions and good disneystore.com pin releases. Especially the Halloween ones.
I wasn't around during the DA pin days, but those must have been fun!
But back to the original question, I think so.
With DSSH modeling the Dark Tales backer cards the same as the Beloved Tales backer cards, I suspect that there will be a a Dark Tales counterpart to every Beloved Tales pin.
Except... there is a Dark Tale Emperor's New Groove Yzma but I do not see an ENG Beloved Tales pin. Did I miss it or is one not listed on PinPics?
Firstly, I don't think any pin should cost so much regardless of rarity. Which is why I never spend more than $25 on a pin. I understand why but still don't agree. Secondly, I believe these pins are underestimated. I think value wise they are at their low right now due to people trying to resell and not have lost a lot of money from the event price. I believe once they're out of the original ticket owners hands and into others, their value will go up. I don't think it's like a normal dssh release where it's only hype and it'll end up being $40 pins. These are way too nice to reach that low in value. These and future series will go up, in exception to the unpopular characters/bad designs.
Yes they are Beloved Tales counterpart, Dark Tales. It is a given. Not really a discussion.
I don't think there's been one. So perhaps a future release. How many more animated movies are there left that need to be made as BTs?
Ooh, maybe a ENG BT as the surprise event exclusive pin?
The true winner with the Dark tales release is DSF.They will pull in more than a 100K.
Well, they do have to earn money to continue having these events.
I'm so glad Yzma is getting some love. Just hope I dont have to pay an arm and a leg to get her.
Have they had surprise pins at these events before?
Yes, only available to event guests first and if any extra, sold to others.
Up nesting dolls was for BATB.
Toy story 3 BT was for the pixar event.
Star wars event had a surprise pin too.
Awesome! Now I am even more excited!
Any speculation as to what the surprise pin could be? Seem like some were related to event, and some not.
Hoping for a Mother Gothel or Shere Khan DT pin!
big bad wolf
maybe a whole new set of 12 surprise dark tales
It would be funny if it was a set of of 12 dark tales as the surprise pin....funny and yet scary
Winter Belle PTD was also an event surprise.
We will find out soon! Fingers crossed for an additional DT pin!
Maybe a great PTD. Or a BT.
maybe Beast in human form like the belle ptd that was a surprise
Anyone else notice the distinct lack of Gaston ? Surely he'll be involved somewhere , Disney usually likes to include him somewhere in these Villains sets
I don't think they would capture him very well.
Yup. I'm expecting him for the Dark Tales for BATB. King Candy for WIR. Prospector Pete for TS2. Zurg for TS1. But what for TS3? Cuz we already have Lotso on the BT. So maybe Big Baby? Then who for Bambi? The Hunter? So many possibilities to think of!
