I recently learned of the dragon mystery box sets at the June Disneyland PTN event. Unfortunately, I learned a bit too late to get on the lists for the two people in the For Sale sub forum that were offering pickups. Oof! My dragon collection has a mighty need for at least a few of those pins, but I’m not sure what the best method would be for getting them at this point. I see a few people on eBay selling presales of them, but I don’t know if the prices of PTN pins usually go up considerably when they are released? Guess it depends on the popularity of them. I also don’t know how safe buying in advance is on eBay. Looking for advice from more veteran pin traders!!

Usually if pins don't sell out at the event, they will be sold at locations in the parks!

I'm not close to the parks sadly, so I can't go and get them there! (Nor do I have an AP anyways) Though I suppose someone else could :)
I guess I also wonder if it is common for a lot of the PTN pins to make it to the park? Everyone was saying the dragon pins would be popular so I wonder if they will be snatched up that night. Do people often ask in the For Sale/Wanted subforum for extra pickups?

You could definitely get somebody to pick up at the parks after the event if they lasted..... are they just limited release and not LE? If so I think you have a good chance of getting ahold of some after the event

Alas, they are LE 2400. So, not the smallest LE, but indeed limited.

That's a pretty high LE size. See if you can be put on waiting lists? They may sell more to event-goers at the event itself

Good to know that it's considered a high LE! I guess I just wanted to know if there was a good chance I could get them on a wait list vs. someone on ebay. I don't know how big the events are, how many people usually buy all the pins, etc, and I really love this set!

Generally any release over LE1000 might be considered high, but since this is a mystery set and each pin LE2400, with 10 pins in the set it's probable boxes will be leftover. Most mystery boxes tend to be LR, since this collection is LE the struggle to complete will be a little tougher, not to mention it's dragons!:p
Doesn't hurt to post Wanted on DPF, the waitlist will be tough since if extras are available, it's still limited to buy at event. Buying on the other site at higher cost can be your last resort, it will always be there. Prices will differ per dragon with some being higher than others, prebuy might not pay off if you're looking for certain ones. Consider the chance of preordering and getting the same pins in all the boxes:( at a higher price might not be too fun if they're not the ones you wanted? As mentioned leftovers are usually released at the parks in a week or 2, so there's always a chance again, lower to cost.
Hope this helps:stitch:

Thank you, this is helpful - I’ll see about getting on a waitlist and keep my eyes peeled for news of more availability :)

I agree with others, try to get on a waiting list or keep searching for people doing pick ups. I've seen some higher LE sell out quickly at events while others seem to last forever. Dragons do seem to be a more popular thing do collect so personally I'd try to find someone to get one for you sooner rather than later.

I was able to get on a waitlist, so fingers crossed they can pick up some extras for me! I didn’t realize that dragons were so popular, I feel like I don’t see them too often (although I know a lot of people collect, say, Maleficent, including her dragon form, or SitS, which includes dragon Mim). I need to find some people with those collections so I can add more pins to my “wants” list!

Good luck! I would offer to help but I don't think I'll be able to even fulfill my current waitlist. The good thing is that these have a high LE so finding people who are selling/trading them (especially single pins from open packs) after the event should be relatively easy.

This set covers a wide variety of characters, so some may be going for the set because of dragons overall, but I think a larger percentage of people are going for the boxes because they collect something that one of these dragons is in. Like Sleeping Beauty collectors will want Maleficent, Mulan collectors will want Mushu, etc. but not necessarily others in the set. They'll be getting multiple boxes to have a better chance at the one or two specific pins they want and will have the rest as extras to sell or trade.

ETA: Since each pin is LE2400 and there are 10 in the set, that is 24,000 pins. Two pins per box means 12,000 boxes. I have no idea how many attendees there will be, but there would have to be 1,200 attendees each buying their maximum of 10 boxes from the RSP to sell out before the event. I am pretty confident that that didn't happen and that there will be a fair amount of boxes available at the event.

A shame then that I’d like all of them at some point! (Except Fred). Hopefully I get some of the more popular ones up front so I don’t have to worry about those. And seeing that math does make it seem much more doable!

@SensitiveDeer
Check TheMickeyMouseRules thread in the Sales Section. She is doing sign-ups for the Dragons and has quite a few spots left. :)

I did notice! Unfortunately TheMickeyMouseRules is only selling them opened, with specific pins (and for 15 a pop). I would prefer them sealed in the box, since opening a mystery box is half the fun!

Thank you! I would be, although I did get on a wait list with AJK, paid in advance, and I’m not sure I can afford more boxes + shipping from two people... It’s tricky though since I do want more of them, pin trading sure isn’t a cheap hobby!
I'm sure if you check back, there should be a trading section, since these mystery boxes are unpredictable. Depends on how mixed up these boxes are before distribution before they're put in RSP bags for pickup, there's been times when everyone gets duplicates or more of same pin. If it's a pin You want or trades well, it's Great, but if not then you're so disappointed/frustrated, hoping for well mixed up boxes for variety sake!!:stitch:

Oh no! That sucks. I certainly hope that doesn’t happen, but at least if I can get a hold of some, even if they are extras, it’s good to know I might be able to trade for ones I want (or maybe different dragon pins altogether)

I bought 10 boxes several years ago of Haunted Mansions anniv, 5 were the same, and the other 5 were the same :( out of 10 only 4 different pins ugh, had fun opening till I did all 10.
Which ones are you looking for?

Big yikes. Hopefully you were able to trade for the others in the set.
I am (unfortunately) seeking the ones that I anticipate to be the most popular. I wouldn’t mind having a collection of most of them, but the four I really would like are Maleficent, Gwythaint, Mushu, and Mim.

I think the Gwythaint should be fairly easy to trade for if you don't get it, as there aren't many Black Cauldron collectors. I'm guessing Mim will be medium-ish easy, since there are more Sword in the Stone collectors than Black Cauldron but still not a lot. Maleficent and Mushu will be the more difficult of the two to track down afterwards since Mali is one of the most popular characters in pins and there are a lot of Mulan collectors.

Yeah, that’s the breakdown I was anticipating as well. I imagine Figment might also be popular, but I’ve never been to WDW and there’s too many figment pins for me to try and track down in general, so I’m not really hardcore on collecting him! Fingers crossed I can get Mali right off the bat so I don’t have to stress about her. :)
(Well, fingers crossed I get any pins, since I’m just on a waitlist!)

Figment is going to be an oddball one, since he is WDW-based but this trade event is in California only. I don't know of too many California traders who collect Figment. He'll probably be a popular one for East Coast people to try and buy or trade for online or at the trade event in August.
