Hi all,

Been lurking around learning (plus left right after signing upfor my 2 weeks a years duty) about the pins and drooling a lot.

Kind of curious though what types of collections and how people feel about collecting.

Seems most of us first and formost go after specific characters (I count interests in specific rides, ectin this). Than there seems to be some go after misterypins. Finally there seems to be a search for rare pins. I am also confused on the ones that seem to have movie cells in them. I don't remember seeing them before.

Amy and I are heading back out to DL in Sept for seeing the new parks. Was checking out some of the new stuff coming out and saw several sets for 2012. I have noticed that the date ones and non-mystery pins sets don't seem to have much showing here. Is there a levelof what pin is worth buying? Just curious, I will still buy a pin if I like it. These being first on the list :hsd:

The ones you mentioned with film cells in them just started last year. Piece of Movie Hostory pins are very collectable, large pins. Last years the scenes werent that great, but they got it figured out this year and these pins are crazy popular.

Some folks collect the mystery box pins, but it seems to me usually people pick up just the ones that match their collections. For instance, I only wanted one from a recent mystery set. The "best friends" set, I wanted Thumper and Bambi, but no other pins. I dont know why, but people dont ted to collect pins with dates on them, not hard core collectors anyway. Go figure.

Everyone collects different things. Rides/attractions, movies, princesses, dogs, cats, etc...
My collections:

princesses and Lead females of the movies (for my youngest daughter)
Winnie the pooh characters (for my older daughter)
Smart comment Tinker bells (for my older daughter too)
Thumper
Pixie Hollow *almost complete/caught up*
 
That is what the mystery boxes mean to me as well, I'm just out for specific charaters mostly. Granted it is funny for mesaying that since I hadn't even been to Disney before May last year and had not even heard about pin collecting.

For me it is Stitch, Chip & Dale and holiday ones (love HM). For Amy it is Tigger. This doesn't stop me from buying ones that catch my eye but I would guess I am hardly unique in that :naughty:

Hi...I would say, just collect what you like (characters, movies, etc.). If you decide to trade with other traders (not just CMs), don't ever let anyone pressure you into trading. Just have fun with it! Those are my "basics." As time goes on, you'll become educated about pins, sometimes it's overwhelming. The good thing is that if you're not sure about a trade (fairness, whatever), you can post here and people will help out, help you decide.
 
Yep, I totally agree. I don't collect for anyone but myself. For me, as my signature suggests, Chip n Dale are the No 1. Then I collect Princesses (but I like some more than others), I love Christmas pins too. Also like Cruise Line pins. Two of my favourite other characters are Roo and Lumpy the Heffalump. I'm really in to the Pin Trading pins and when I sorted my collection out recently; it seems I have quite a liking for Castle pins too.
Aanndd as it says below, just anything else I like the look of or has special significance for me. Special dates or events...
 
Me and my wife just started collecting ourselves. Thnx to Ebay and cast member lanyards we have amased a nice collection. I collect Haunted Mansion (about 120 of em). My wife collects Chip/Dale, Snow White/Dwarves/Queen/Hag, Boo, and is thinking about getting into Belle/Beast stuff. We will buy pieces that attract our eye. She gets bride/groom stuff if it's nice. I like pins that look like tickets or attraction poster as well. Luckily she is not a completist but I am = ) So far we havn't bought anything to trade with people online but that may change once we are comfortable with it
 
I just started collecting at Christmas, and I go for my favorite characters/movies and also anything that happens to catch my eye and looks cool. I'm a fan of anything Alice first and foremost, and some piratey things, and occasionally I want to complete a Hidden Mickey set or a mystery set just because I think they're cool. (I love the food Mickey ears and the character hats.) Other sets I just want my favorite characters from.

Strangely I am never drawn to anything with words on them (except the comic-book-style ones, like the Queen of Hearts saying "Off with her head!") If they have dates, Holiday names, the name of the attraction, whatever, written on it, I almost never want it, and I can't quite explain why.

We traded with cast members when we were at WDW and DLR, and I'll also buy pins in the shops (and off this forum) if I just like them. Sometimes for fun I search the Pinpics site with a keyword just to see what turns up. It's fun, and I see delightful things I never would've guessed existed, although it has led to my wants list being rather huge. :) (There's no way I could compose a short "holy grails" list; I just want everything! Even though I know I won't get it. For me half the fun is looking!)

I'm still not sure what makes a Grail though. I would guess that the Chip & Dale kilts might be as it was a limited addition.

As long as you like the pin I think you should have it. I have a main collection of Alice in Wonderland, but I have other characters as well. I also collect all the pins from special events, but only if I attend them. My thoughts on a Grail are if it is a pin you feel you just can't be without or it completes your collection, then it would be a grail. My Grail list has basically remained unchanged for over 5 years now. They are just very difficult to get pins with no one trading them. You have some very nice pins on your "dreams" list and I hope you find them.
 
I started out with a few Si and Am pins because I had a siamese cat & Lady & the Tramp is my fave, and then collected what I liked but realized that was a lot, so have been trying to narrow it down to more specific collections like cats (especially villians), Lady & the Tramp, Bambi, PODM, SHAG, retro type, Tangled, & on & on... I say just collect what you like & worry about thier "worth" when buying off Ebay or when you decide to start trading which opens up a whole new aspect of collecting because you have to get ones you can give up & that everyone wants to trade which can be harder, but everyone here is great about helping out, you can always ask for help from DPFers. :)
 
You can be as specific as you want, or as general as you want! :) That's the whole fun! The more specific, the more reasonable multiple collections can be!

For instance my collections (after some months of deciding and filtering) ended up becoming strictly Full-Body, Stand-Alone, "Cut-Out" Villains! :D That was after I decided "Any Villain Pin, and any Stand-Alone character pin was too much for me :P

Have fun with it! You could even let it change every month if you want to!
 
My fave pins to collect are Lion King pins. Im always on the lookout. Im also collecting the Lost Keys of DisneyLand set, and have the 5 keys from WDW. My newest collection is the Piece of Disney Movie pins. I pre-ordered the new Lion King pin due in July. Cant wait to get it. Waiting on my Pinocchio, 101 Dalmatians, and Dumbo piece of Disney Movie pins :D
 
Collect what you like! I look at things, and go "yeah, i really like that one" i might have nothing else from that film, but hey! whatever.
So I have lots of randoms. But mostly i like Pluto, I find as much Pluto as I can and any of the other dogs I can get my hands on. But i've been going for Tangled, Princess & the Frog, PODM, Pixar Beloved tales, Robin Hood, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty and the Little Mermaid. lots of pins. lots and lots of pins. I feel like such a hoarder. totally worth it!!
Collect what you like. For trading, I find if I really like it, it generally trades well, so I get a couple. I also keep an eye out for what's really popular trading wise. Sometimes its good to get something you know is popular for trading even if you don't want it. That way, a pin you might not like, could get you something you really want.
Do what you want, it's a fun hobby, but you have to keep you happy.
 
I collect pins from movies that I love, simple as that! I've traded for or bought a few pins that I just think are pretty, but those remain in my trade book in case I can trade them for a pin for one of my main collections :) I know of quite a few people who just collect pins that they feel are 'valuable', people that want to PROFIT from the hobby. I just want pins I will love and cherish and that will make me smile!
