I've never seen anyone besides a cast member use a hip lanyard. Does anyone here use one and if so, what advantages and disadvantages are there?
 
I used one a couple times when Disney first came out with the hip lanyard booster set. I stopped using mine after having my pins fall off easily. The pin backs would rub against my jeans or shorts causing them to come loose.
 
I will be using one on my next trip to disney some day. I cant wear the lanyards because my neck is to sensitive and will brake out like I learned from my December 2011 trip.
 
Sometimes an easy fix to neck issues with lanyards can be prevented by using a lanyard cover ... I've seen them made with felt or soft cotton material and they are like a sleeve that fits over the back of the lanyard ... also makes them cooler to wear (especially if it's made out of cotton) ... I've not made any but I'm sure there are many talented people on DPF that can help out with that part. The ones I've seen are only about 8 inches long or so and you open one end of your lanyard and slip it over and move it to the back of your lanyard ... or I guess you could make it with snaps or velcro to open and close it around your lanyard. Just a thought ...
 
I've often get weird looks by people at the parks when I stare at cast members Hip lanyards from a distance....lol... I can see an advantage if you do it for kids since it is in their line of sight... However, as a grown up, I find it a bit annoying to have to lean down and have too look for pins... That's my two cents :p
 
I really wanted to use one, but I couldn't find one to buy other than the "nerds" starter set, which had a design & pins that I wasn't interested in.
 
I'm planning on using one at pin nights, because I don't have enough pins for a book. I still like to keep it traditional with wearing lanyards at the park.

At music stores they sell neck pads. Mostly saxophone players buy them since most of them strap their instrument to their necks. Maybe one of those could work for you.
 
Hip lanyards are widely used in business area, some of employees used hip lanyards in business lounge. But i don't like to wear hip lanyards. There are so many varieties are available in hip lanyards in market.
 
We only use our hip lanyards for our kid traders. We want to make it easy for the kids to be able to pick something that we dont care about trading with them. We usually keep hidden mickey pins and rack pins we have had for a while on them. We dont care if they get lost. It is a good thing too because the pins pop off easily when placed in bags. That brings me to the next problem we have with hip lanyards; the automatic coiler is not strong enough to hold the lanyard up when it has pins on it. This is why the hip lanyard is kept in my purse or something. It works well for our purpose, but if you wanted to keep real traders on it I would not recommend it.
 
dang i was just going to say its not like it has to stay on ur hip. it has a pull string that will let you pull it up or out for better looking at. But now that i read it will not stay up with pins. makes me think its not a good idea. i guess it needs to have a better pull string thing. i know the ones that u see school ppl use for keys can hang lbs and lbs of stuff. i never thought the hip lanyard would have trouble. :(
 
I've never used the Hip Lanyards (got a few for secret santa) but I do miss the CM side bag/purse, got to carry extra pins, pens and other odds/ends plus the felt over the backing usually prevented it from falling off as longs as they weren't loose already.
 
we just bought the nerds one recently. Now that we are trying it, I realized that the string is thin and won't hold too many pins. It is for my 12yo but I don't think she will be using it much either since it won't hold many pins.
 
My actual lanyard is just for show so i use a hip lanyard for my crappy cm traders. Use the locking plunger backs on that thing though because they will fall off easily.
