Pin Wiki?

If you were to do this, would you follow Pinpics' number system but add way more information about scrappers and such? I am just trying to get a feel of what it would be like.

even before DPF, I had an idea to create a more full-featured pinpics-type service, but thinking about the last decade (or more) of data contained on pinpics, and their arbitrary numbering system, it's really difficult to create another numbering scheme that would make sense to people, especially since pinpics numbers are generally the "standard" way to refer to/identify a pin.

PinPics has been deleting and changing information on pin listings over the past year or so. They don't have all of the community-provided information that used to be listed just a few years ago. So a secondary source that includes all known information (including scrapper warnings) could be helpful to the community. But starting over with the 60,000+ pins out there? I don't see people putting in the effort. They'll use what's left of PinPics until the hobby/interest goes away.

perhaps not for _every single_ pin out there, but maybe start with the "controversial" pins (pins with high possibility of counterfeit or scrappers) or highly desired pins, just to have more info on them such as the history, scrapper info, and a gallery of user-submitted photos for people to compare. I'm sure for some rack pins and some of the more common pins, people aren't worried as much about as they would when it comes to a more valuable pin.

the challenge with that then, is to make sure that the information posted is as accurate as possible.

It would be good to have a wiki, just to explain some things even. I know when I was a newbie I had a buddy to point me in the right direction but if there was a how to / big wiki out there I know people would use it. I would use it too, after all with a shared knowledge base the hobby can only get better.

I could do error pins..or mistake pins..you have the error pin and We could add or variation to it..something in that order

But who will be able to add/edit the info? If it is like Wiki - the pages can be easily added/edited - we wouldn't want information to be jeopardised and all the hard work thrown away.

I think whoever starts it...I think others should be able to comment on it..or if it could has sublinks

The neat thing with wikis is that none of the information is lost, and all the changes are logged. You canbseenwhat changes were made and by who. For example, if you log onto Wikipedia.org and look up "Disney Pins" you can check the logs to see what information has changed throughout the years, and even what user names made those changes. Don't be surprised if you recognize a few of those names!

It's hard to figure out what might be needed until after new Pinpics goes live. But where I think there is a "need" is for pictures, descriptions, counterfeit info for high end pins. Piecing together Pinpics actions and through the grapevine, it seems Disney has them over a bit of a barrel in terms of providing accurate info for those. Scrapper warnings for HM's sure, counterfeit warnings for "Jessica As..." not so much. So perhaps starting with a limited focus, DA, DS.com, DSF, WDI, lots of detailed photos from people who bought originally from those locations. Let Pinpics handle the everyday park releases and such.

the good thing is all changes/revisions are tracked, so it can easily be reversed.

changes, i'm sure, can also be moderated so they aren't applied immediately (and will only go live after a moderator/curator has reviewed and approved it).

They say sometime this summer. And all functions we currently have will continue to be free. No idea what pay upgrades will include.

Itd be fantastic for the 'release date.' portion. My iPhone dosnt allow me to see the event / pin schedules would be great!

Hard to say. Pinpics probably has to stay in Disney's good graces because of the amount of info, including photographs they copy/paste from Disney's website. But facts aren't copyrightable, and for example as much as MLB would love to shut down all the Fantasy Sports websites that use the raw stats, but they can't. So release dates, prices, edition size, skus, pin measurements, etc aren't "owned" by Disney. As long as people don't copy text or pictures from Disney, and start from providing accurate details of the authentic pins, I think it would be okay. For example, "the measurements of this pin are..." "the size of the copyright box on the back of the pin is..." "There is a cutout here..." Then when people are holding a pin that does not match they will know there is an issue. You wouldn't necessarily even have to say that there are fake pins.
