Lopsided Trade Offers

Lopsided Trade Offers
This thread seems like as good a place as any for this question...

What do you think when someone offers you a pretty lopsided trade that's in *your* favor?

Sometimes it makes me a little suspicious, like "what's wrong with the pin?" Or if it's a new person maybe they just don't realize (although the LE numbers are *right there*...) or maybe the pin is just that much of a grail to them. I'm not sure whether to be worried or not.

I've had one or two like this lately (not from the same person every time) and it just makes me wonder.

Thoughts?

If I know it's someone's grail and it didn't cost me much, maybe I bought it straight from Disney rather than paying the "going" rate so I think I can let it go to someone whom I feel will give it a good home, then I do it.

Sometimes, we'll most of the time I spend big bucks on the harder pins so I can try for my Grails, so it's harder to let go of. :-(

I know I send bad trade requests on a regular basis, I don't do it on purpose, but it happens. I should get better about checking what i'm sending to who, but mostly I just check the pins i'm willing to trade. Now I don't go offering a HM for a PODM, but still. Most of the time people ignore my requests. If I get a "no thanks", I also check what was offered and apologize if it's called for.
I get dumb requests all the time, but mostly I figure they're doing the same thing as me. Now, if someone was going to send me a message like that, i'd be annoyed.

I'm the same way... At least I know I'm not the only one! LOL.

I'd be curious to know how many people on PinPics might be casual collectors or kids. By 'casual' I mean that they really have no concept of the rarity or value of the pins, and just like to collect things they think look neat.

Case in point- my 4 lovely nieces that got me into this hobby... At the time, all pre-teens. They get excited at the sight of any cast member at the parks with a lanyard, and are always buying the common pins at various shops, trading, etc. They all have accounts on PinPics (at least 2 of them do anyway), and they try to trade occasionally. Only being exposed to the park trading/buying environment, they think the hidden mickey and cast lanyard pins are the rarest things out there. :D So they'd see something interesting on PinPics, and offer a hidden mickey pin in exchange... Not really realizing that they are trying to trade for an LE25 auction pin or something... They'd never dream a pin could cost more than $20.

I buy them pins from DSF occasionally, and they've offered pins that became quite collectible (LE150s or something) for a much lesser pin (but one they wanted). Of course the other collector traded, he/she was happy to get a rare pin, my niece was happy to get a pin she really loves, no harm done... They just think it's fun to trade pins... I've even given them rare-ish DSF pins that they didn't care about and told them to offer them on PinPics for things. They'd probably offer them for a common non-LE pin, but they are guaranteed a higher 'Yes' rate, so I'm okay with that.

Of course, this isn't the case most of the time probably, especially with people that have 1000s of pins and make a living on eBay, but there's always the chance that some of them are just people that don't really know there's a rarity involved with these things...

Offer to add something additional in return. Pin karma - treat others as you wish to be treated. :)

Yes, if it's just that they don't realize the worth of their pin. But have you ever had someone offer you a too-good-to-be-true trade that turned out to be a fake/scrapper?

I'm just wondering if that happens...
