Can someone explain the appeal of the haunted mansion to me?

It did not smell like gingerbread when we rode it this last week, even though it is done up for the holidays.

It usually smells like gingerbread in the ballroom/dining hall area when it's done up for Nightmare Before Christmas. On the dining room table there's a huge 'something' that is actually made out of real gingerbread (it's different every year). The smell is, of course, pumped in artificially for the Doombuggies (sort of like the Soarin' over CA ride in the other park) (so it's possible it was out of 'smell' or broken or something), but the 'sculpture' on the table is real... I seem to remember it being a coffin one year, and a large Christmas tree another. One of those unique things to look for every year to see what they've done. I'll be going the weekend before Halloween.

I always want a gingerbread cookie right after I ride the Holiday version. The only thing is I feel weird eating one before it's even Halloween!

1. There are many different Haunted Mansions. Each park has it's own Haunted Mansion. So the one in Paris is going to be different then the one here in California. It is like with the Tower of Terror. Florida and California have similar versions (California's is on smaller land so it isn't as detailed as Florida). But in Tokyo their version is very much darker then America and the story for that one is very different telling then here in the states. Over there a wealthy business man had brought a voodoo doll back from somewhere in I think Africa and the doll was cursed and took over the hotel. Where as here in the states the story goes that there was a big party on the top floor of the hotel and that there was a big storm and it struck the hotel which caused horrible things to the hotel.


2. As a avid rider of the Haunted Mansion and lover of the stories of the different Haunted Mansions my mind is blown that you liked the movie version. That was a very horrid version of the story of the Haunted Mansion. The movie story is very loosely based off the one in California since most people don't know that each park has a different version of the ride.

I LOVE THE HAUNTED MANSION! Specifically the duelers, the Ghost Host and Gus. I'm not a big fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas twist on it though...
