ok things i do.

i run around in a circle and generally get very excitable. hold it in my hand for a second to admire make oo's and aa's. take the back off and then put it on (to see if the backs actually come off ahaha) shine if up with my shirt/sleeve. take a photo. then i wear it (on my pj's or robe if im at home) for about an hour. then i take it off and it sits with me the rest of the day :)

i love reading these!

Actually, if you get new pins at work, you just toss them in your desk drawer like it's nothing. Tangled DSF Chair? In the drawer. Wall-E marquee? In the drawer. Maybe I should start doing that and then pin magic will bring high caliber pins like those in my direction! Haha

haha nice! So your rub em first and then snap pictures eh? ... i havent developed any new habits :( stil fiddling away at the needles!

ps this is hollie, karl does not react like this! he is a rational man, who takes the back off, looks at the back, looks at the fount, hands it to me to oo and aa

lol just as i was typing! no the most excited karl has ever been was when i managed to surprise him with an LE 100 black cauldron at christmas. he stopped unwrapping and kept picking it back up. he lost an auction for it the month before and a cheaper by it now appeared without him noticing. best sneakiness ever!

i do the shining of the shirt and looking for a good ray of light to view any scratches then smile like an idiot to myself LOL. i do the pin back check usually before putting it in my book or board. but it sucks when the pin post is actually loose

I discovered this morning that I have a ritual with my pins. I had a bazillion pins to add to my books because of the RAK attack and about 1/4 of the way through I realized i had done it to every. single. pin.

  1. Remove pin from card/backer or whatever its attached to.
  2. admire for a few moments... "commune with the pin." lol
  3. hold up at angle in light to look for dips, streaks and shine.
  4. flip over and inspect backstamp.
  5. wiggle post a bit to ensure it is sturdy.
  6. if its going in the collection, commune some more and then find the exact right spot in the keeper book for it to rest.
  7. if it goes in the trade book, put it on backer card and find the right place in the trade book for it.
  8. once added to a book (keeper or trader) add to my pinpics lists.

Is it rude to check for dips and scratches of someone else's pin at the parks or trading in person before going through with the trade? It does seem to suggest lack of trust even though you ARE just trying to be sure... The suggestions above are great but wouldn't want to seem rude. What do you guys think?

 LOVE this thread... I also do the ole "shirt shine" when I get a pin lol... I then take the mickey pin back off and put it back on to see if it's a snug or loose fit... If it's loose, I hunt around for another mickey back

Everyone has their own little ritual so here is mine. I know that a lot of oil on pins can mess them up in the future and our skin naturally produces oil, so when I first receive a pin, before taking it out of the plastic or touching it I wash my hands for 28 seconds nearly exactly (I have a ticking clock above my bathroom sink so I count the notch as it moves every second), I do 7 seconds both palms against each other, 7 seconds the back of the left hand, 7 seconds the back of the right hand, and finally 7 seconds in between my fingers.

I then proceed to dry them off completely (I don't want water on my pins) before touching the pins. Once the pin is in my hand, I run my fingers of the front and back to feel for any visible chips, then I wipe the pin on my shirt or a tissue generally for extra shine before inspecting it under the light to make sure it doesn't have any imperfections ^_^ I also inspect the Mickey backings because one thing that irks me is when people make a second hole in the backing because the miss the first one...if I see that, I put the odd Mickey backing in a bag with my others and replace it with a brand, spanking new one!!! One hole, freshly used!
