what do you collect and why?
I collect:
Friday the 13th pins - My birthday is on the 13th and I turned 13 on good friday the 13th. The number can't be all bad.
Tigger - I just love Tigger. I focus on him full body by himself, and am trying to get older pins (pre 2005) though I go after newer ones as well.
Brave - It's a Scottish heritage thing for me, and I loved the movie.
Stitch - Again loved the movie - Emphasis on Stitch with Ducks, Stitch with or as a dog, Stitch wearing a chefs hat. Though I do collect other Stitch pins as well.
Characters with bagpipes - Scottish thing again, my mom played them in high school.

My wife's collection is completely different, and she has collections started for our daughters 4 & 1.

This was great to read down what people collect. For me, I mostly collect the WDW hidden mickey series and various pass holder and special event pins. Since I have just about completed all past WDW hidden mickey collections, I'm starting to expand to DLR.

I collect cats, namely the great Figaro and then I moved into Si & Am and Chandu. Paula collects anything shiny and sharp, but mainly it is the following: Ariel, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Animal Kingdom, Flower and Garden, Duffy, Patrotic pins, Donald Duck, and pins that catch her fancy and hurt my pocket book$$$$$$.

Collect what you enjoy >^..^<

Forgot she is doing Brave as well

That can make a fun and colorful collection. Good choice! I hope you're able to find a lot of them. I haven't seen too many though, but then that might make it easier to find all of them! EDIT: I just checked pinpics. There are a lot of them!

I only collect Lion King, as Lion King in general is the main thing I collect, and I needed to start focussing on little items, as I have no room for big items anymore, haha! I do try and get a cute pin here and there, it's very hard to say "no" when seeing a very cute one that isn't your main collection, lol. For now, I also don't collect *every* Lion King pin out there, but only the ones that I really like. Maybe someday, if I have all of those, I'll continue to make the pin-section of my collection complete ^^

The first pin I ever bought was Eeyore in sunglasses (pin 5488 on pinpics and was released in 2001). I put it on the front of my straw Indiana Jones hat I bought at that store across from the ride in Disneyland. Before I knew it, my hat was filled with pins all the way around it. I had made scenes with it from some of my favorite movies. I never knew anything about collecting as a hobby, I just thought they were cute! In 2003, I took my roommate to Disneyland for the first time. Her eyes were like that of a small child as she walked down Main Street taking it all in. I will never forget that day. That same trip we flew my Mother in from Vegas and she spent a few days with us there as well. We went on our first "pin quest" and got a 2004 Olympic pin and map. I bought that entire set to go with the map. I then bought an Olympic lanyard set and with it came a small pin bag. I have a picture of my Mother, my roommate and myself wearing our little lanyards with just a few pins on them for trading. We took many trips as a family after that, even spent one Christmas there, each time getting more and more pins to add to what was now a growing collection. Our collection has changed from time to time over the years. So many of them bring back a flood of loving memories we shared at the park.

Our favorite trip involved a mickey "pin quest" at DCA in the rain. At the end of that trip we got a little Mickey holding coke bottles. There were statues of Mickey everywhere that year. We were able to set up and trade at cokes corner way back when and I remember giving pins to kids and taking small birthday presents in to give them if they were wearing a birthday button. So many wonderful stories I could share because of pin trading, we truly love it. Soon we realized we needed to narrow what we were going to collect to what we liked the most.

I chose to collect Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean since they were my favorite rides from my childhood. I also have a small Small world collection. Movie wise I collect Mary Poppins pins. I also collected pins from the 50 anniversary as we were there once again with my Mother, father, aunt and niece. My roommate chose pin trading pins, Eeyore, and trains pins. She also started a small "little" pins that she keeps in a little pin bag. Together later on we started a Maleficent as a dragon, Ursula, and holiday's collection (which is mostly Christmas and Halloween). My Mother loves Snow White and Belle in Blue and over the years we have gotten her some great ones.

Since we started collecting we have made turns and changed things many times. I collected many sets of pins only to realize that after I got them all I really didn't care about them that much and they were either traded away or sold to others. In 2009, I was injured and ended up disabled. I tried to work through it instead of being smart and going on disability while still working and ended up without a job and no disability for almost 2 years. A lot of pins went by the wayside during that time. My room mates pin trading pins are all but gone now. My Pirates collection is not even half of what it once was. Most importantly though is we made it through. Now that I am on disability we get enough to pay our bills not including gas and grocery money. We always find a way to make it work though. I have more than a love for Disney but a sincere appreciation for our collection both what we still have today and what we had to get rid of to survive. We love our pins, we love Disney and we love the feeling we get when we get to go to the park. Our pins have so many memories attached to them. They bring back memories of friends that have past that we met at Disneyland. They help us remember the good in people and the smiles. We have met so many cast members there. We like to visit with them and share our lives. Some of them have even taken us to Company D a few times. Mostly, because of pin trading, we feel blessed by Disney and we are grateful.

NBC... because Jack is King!!!!! oh and we pick up a pin or two while at the park just for the memories.

I collect pins of my fave films and random what nots!

fox and the hound - my fave Disney film of all time and the first Disney film I ever saw.
oliver and company - I love this film, it's about being friends and looking after one another! Also my cat is named after Oliver.
lady and the tramp - the only 'romantic' thing I collect I love lady and the tramp, it was the first film I ever owned I bought it for my 10th birthday hehe!
bolt - bolt reminds me of my puppy polo, loyal protector! I love the film in general too and I think it's little appreciated.
frankenweenie - tim burton wins at life, I loved the original live action and when he did a stop motion I had to collect the pins!
thumper & miss bunny - I don't collect bambi but I love the bunnies!

Yeah so I mostly collect animals and my fave Disney films are all to do with animals. I love all my collections!

What about NBC. Jack is King and Tim Made him first. Cant believe Jack is 20 years old this year. He is getting old. Next year he can even drink. lol

I started with pins of characters and attractions that I liked so I ended up with a huge smorgasbord of pins. Recently I've been working on narrowing it down to stay focused and thin out my collection so it's more coherent. There's just too many to have them all. These are my current major focuses in collecting:

The Three Caballeros - watched it all the time as a kid when I was at my caregiver's home from the time I was a baby until I was 10. An unconventional favorite of mine.
Alice in Wonderland - family staple. There's an Alice room at my parents' house. I couldn't not have Alice pins!
Yzma, Stepsisters, Vanessa, Si & Am, Gaston, Ariel's Sisters - there aren't too many pins of them so it makes it special when I find one
Bayou - encompasses gators, NOS, Mardi Gras, jazz, Voodoo, tarot, ghosts, and mint juleps! This is what I'm most excited to expand on since it takes more decision making on my part to pick out what I want.

i wish i could limit myself to collecting just one movie/character. i collect them all. i mainly like the animals (cats at #1) but i collect dumbo most of all. i have always loved dumbo and the message it sends to not be ashamed of who you are, no matter how many people try to bring you down.

How wonderful your story is! Made me smile so much, and also, I'm glad that you have made it through a difficult place in your life. The memories are worth so, so much more then the pins you had to give up to survive.

I love that you would give gifts to kids because it was their birthday!!! It's very, very sweet, and I know you made their day in Disneyland even more special! I think that's something I want to do too. :)

Ah this thread again... going to add to my answer here as I now collect King Candy pins too! Because we all know how cool he is.

thanks! awesome i am going to check them out there!

My main collection is Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. For a ride that I cried the first time on, I sure can't get enough of it. I love the "story", its use of practical effects, the characters and overall ambience. Its the right mix of spooky/dark and Disney, and it makes me happy. There's not much of a story as to why I collect the Haunted Mansion. It just makes me happy.

Recently, I started collecting 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It is my favorite live-action Disney movie and possibly my favorite Disney movie as well. It has a Steampunk feel to it that calls to me (as I am a big fan of Steampunk), and I would love to live in a home modeled after the Nautilus.

Welcome to DPF!

All we did was pick up Disney related items at the .99 cent store. You can not wrap them but we put them in a big Disney bag and when we saw a child with a Birthday tag we gave them a gift. Once we went to the "World of Color" show and took a bunch of glow stick items and passed them out to kids. Again we got them at the >99 cent store but the parents of the kids were amazed that we would do that for strangers. To us, a child's smile is worth well over a buck so it was a "no brainer." I wish we could still do it... maybe we will be able to someday but until then, like you said, we have tons of cherished memories!

I am new too, I have been collecting for maybe a few months...I love stitch mostly ( I have many stitch pins), but I also am trying to get one cool pin representing each disney movie, its kinda fun, so far I have chicken little, bolt, and peter pan. welcome to the forum and hope you have lots of fun.
