My issue with couples is really simple. Male dolls tend to be horrible. That's just how it is. They're always stocky and stiff. I really do not think that a high-end version of the male dolls that are released would be enough to make it okay. Naturally, they could always improve the dolls in some way; however, I really just don't see it.
 

So true! The Disney Store needs to take some notes from Mattels' more recent collector male dolls and also Integrity Toys' male fashion collector dolls, which are finely sculpted, have rooted hair, and have many points of articulation. The only shred of hope we could have if male dolls are to be included (i.e. the "princes"), is that they did make new and unique sculpts for each of the Designer Villains, except Mother Gothel, so maybe they might realize that the princes/romantic interests would need the same TLC. Cinderella's Prince Charming and Prince Philip's dolls' head sculpts especially need do-overs! But yeah, I'm not holding my breath that The Disney Store will give they guys that much attention...

They will most definitely be joined by their husbands in the art and in the dolls themselves if they used the same designs. Why would Disney release them by themselves if they looked the same lol All Disney would be doing is increase the LE size of the Disney princesses haha


What was so cool about the original Disney Designer line was the fact that Disney was embracing a totally radical way of looking at their most prized characters. They took the idea of each princess (and then villains) and made them into glamorized supermodels essentially that were based off of the princesses. If they make a second one, that whole "completely new way of looking at the princesses" is gone because the title "Designer Princess" is no longer unique an has to be shared between 2 lines of merchandise.

For example, what if Disney released 10 Designer Rapunzel dolls. What makes the first one so special and so wanted anymore? I mean, people can go pick up one of the other 9 different versions out there, why fight for the first one that came out?

This is just my opinion though ^_^

I like that idea that Merida won't have someone because she truthfully didn't at the end of the movie, but then I think there would be a bunch of "lonely Merida" jokes haha xD

And edition size can make different Rapunzels more valuable... Braided hair version... Short-haired version....

They're special because they are the originals and because of the chaos they caused. This gives the people who didn't get a princess last time and don't want to fork out hundreds of dollars for one doll or pin a chance to get some for their collections. ( Like me )

What if the first (or third, or 6th or whatever) Rapunzel had the most beautiful face and dress? That one would be special to me and I would want it. Each Rapunzel would be unique if they had different face ups and outfits. People would want different ones according to their preferences, and it would give more high quality options for people's favorite characters. That's why I would be completely fine with another princess designer set. Belle and Mulan are my favorite characters, but I did not like either of their designer dolls. If they released another designer set where their outfits and faces looked appealing to me, I would be thrilled and definitely get them. I don't like the couples idea only because I generally do not like male dolls. It would be totally fine if they packaged say, Snow White and Prince Charming separately, I would be able to just get Snow White but if they packaged them together and jacked up the price because of it, it would annoy me because I would have to pay for 2 dolls when I only want one. And I'm sure it would be hard to sell off the male dolls, since they just aren't as popular. I would probably avoid them altogether if that was the case.
 

The thing is, that's just it. I wouldn't be shocked if they redo the princesses, if a majority of people like one version of each princess over the other (especially since it seems people gravitate to liking things better if they know other people value it highly). The problem with this is that, whichever one is more popular skyrockets in price while the one that isn't as popular is kicked to the curb. So by making another Designer princess run, one version of most of the princesses won't shine as much as its more popular counterpart and right there it'll lose value while also not being the only Designer Princess Rapunzel anymore.

Now if Disney did something like brown-haired Rapunzel, that wouldn't be bad since she would still retain her uniqueness considering the other Designer Rapunzel was of a different form. However, what would they do with the other princesses? The other princesses didn't really change form, just dresses...
 
I was rooting for a Designer Heroine or male villains line. I am excited to see how they do the couples if it really is what they are doing. I actually like the idea of historically accurate princesses. Maybe they could do the couples in historically/culturally relevant wedding attire? That would be cool.
 
I'll admit. If they did historically accurate princesses, I'll just right back on board since that idea is amazing. Of course the Designer line would end here but I think a historically accurate set would be look too cool!

I buy dolls because I like them, not because they will become more or less valuable in the future. If I'm not going to sell my doll, and I don't buy them with the intention to, why do I care whether her monetary value goes up or down; she is valuable to me. What you're saying seems to matter more to people like scalpers, and if they get screwed over, then good. I would love a designer heroines line more but I wouldn't be upset if it was another designer princess line.
 
Everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion but I do believe having another "designer" princess line would be a silly move by Disney as they really should not redo something they have already done but that being said if people really wanted more designer-like princesses what is stopping Disney from just producing a different line, like many people suggested the historically accurate line sounds like a great idea, or a wedding line.

I don't believe Disney is restricted to the designer line and I honestly don't see them repeating the line and just changing it up as I think more people would be disappointed than happy about that. At least by doing another line it will satisfy those that want a princess doll and missed out on the designer line but at the same time gives collectors the ability to get an entirely new line as it would be something completely different. Eventually it could eventuate to being Disney "Collector" dolls with a designer line in 2011 a wedding line in 2013 etc. So that way disney can justify the re-releasing of princesses without upsetting both parties.

Also I do not think it is really fair to say that people that value the dolls because of their value as well are scalpers going by that theory then anyone that buys a house and land for investment purposes would be a scalper as well. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to buy something because you know how valuable and rare the item is, a lot of people do it and they are generally referred to as collectors. They may see it as something valuable due to the rarity and level of demand for the item but that doesn't necessarily mean they are buying it with the intention to sell it again later down the track.
 
I honestly don't love the idea of designer couples. I was already on the fence when I thought they would do designer princes, but at least they would be different and I'd probably pick up a couple of them. I would so much rather them do different characters all together. My space is limited, and don't want to have 50 of the same character. I love Snow White, but at some point 10 snow whites kinda makes each of them less special. Just my opinion, but they could do so many other characters, then redo what they have already done.
 

I agree they have SOOOO many different characters they can market that it gets annoying when they advertise the same characters over and over. I mean sure certain characters will sell better than others but if they put the time into marketing other characters they could be just as popular.
 
I just clicked that link to the historical princess designs. Oh my God...I would be LIVING for those dolls. Belle in a pannier gown, Aurora dressed medieval, and Tiana...well I hope they'd put her in her "Almost There" white dress with the boa because making her look "historical" could accidentally make her look like her backup dancers in the Disneyland parade. (Juss sayin) But that would be so ridiculously beautiful. I honestly wish Disney would see those and buy out the artist so that they could be used. The Belle one is just ridiculously gorgeous!

As for couples...yeah, I'm still not on board. BUT I really do look forward to seeing them and what they come up with. (And then of course just wandering around flicker when I can't sleep at night to see all the pretty deboxed fan pics.) I'm all for them making different face molds so that they have different expressions. They do that kind of with the Classic dolls...don't they? It keeps them fresh and makes them slightly less "cookie cutter". If they are done well enough though, the two couples that could make me eat my words and drop some money would be Belle & Beast/Adam/Un-named/Bob/Whatever-you-wanna-call-him and Tiana & Naveen. Those two couples are my favorites. <3

Food for thought that I randomly thought of today...what if the "couples" theme ended up being a "Designer" or "Modernized" artistic depiction of the first kiss shared by each couple? Sure, Snow White and Aurora's first kisses would have to be romanticized a little so they are both standing and...you know...awake, but still. It could be almost as if they took that first kiss scene and then turned it in to a Vogue photo shoot?

I dunno, I'm just drawing at straws here, I just would like to know!

And...Designer Leading Ladies please! I know we've basically cooked that idea up, but I'm pretty much completely on board with like 75% of all the characters that keep getting mentioned the most. Oooooooooh, next year.

That's not true at all. While certainly I collect for the love of the character, I do enjoy knowing the investment of my time and money works in my favor when something I have bought goes up in monetary value. My collection will either be sold by myself one day (not if I can't help it but times are tough) or eventually passed down to my family, and I would like to know what I have collected all this time will bring them some money for whatever they would need. So, while I love the character and own a lot of pieces that aren't worth much in reality but worth a lot to me - I do build a collection knowing full well that one fateful day it will either be sold or dispersed, and in that sense the value does matter to me - and I'm not a scalper.
 

I suppose I agree with you in this respect. I definitely would prefer for the dolls I buy to up rather than down in value. And their monetary value would technically matter once I give them up or sell them but at that point, the value matters more to whoever the dolls go to than to me; I don't really expect to make much profit or money on my dolls if I do sell them. I have a bunch of collector dolls that have gone down in value, as well as many that have gone up, but I don't see them as any more or less unique or special, nor do I necessarily favor the higher valued ones over the lower valued ones. For me, a doll can be completely unique and coveted by everyone and have astronomical ebay prices but if she's hideous to me, then she has no value to me and I would never want her
 
I think it's funny we are talking about the monetary value of the dolls here. I just realized the other day that my collection could ebay for a couple thousand if sold all together. But, I plan on keeping them till death or destruction. So if I were to die or something, my family wouldn't know the value and, if they didn't keep them, they'd probably yard sale for like 100$ all together. O.0
 


Lol that is funny, because I've often thought of this idea myself, me treasuring these items till my death and passing them, only to be treated like trash and sold off for $10 by younger family members who won't see the value in them that I do lol
 

OMG you better tell them what you think it's worth now so they don't do that!! I did an estimate on some of my stuff based on what a friend sold his collection for. We pretty much had the same stuff so I told my family how much, so at least they know. I sure don't ever want to sell, but it's still good to know the value of what you have.

As for the Designer Collection and value, it is true that releasing the same characters again in a different variety of dresses could effect the value of the original line. With dolls though, it can be a little different. How many Barbie's are there - some are just worth more than others. The next Designer Line of them can far surpass the popularity of the first series - but that will make a difference on the value of the original in some way since this is so new.

This is why I think they should hold of on Princesses again. It's too soon. The Designer Line was a hit because it Was so unique, original and unexpected. I think a series of Couples dolls is a good idea, but the molds for the male dolls have to be upgraded drastically - new heads, jointed elbows, wrists, knees, etc. If they are going to do it then do it right. By now I'm hoping Whatever they decide to do is amazing - the expectations of this line are understandably high.
 
I don't even mind them redoing the princesses EVENTUALLY! But sheesh, it's only the 3rd collection, I'd like to see some other characters first! I'm hoping if they do couples, it will be different characters, like elinor/Merida, Peter Pan/Wendy, etc.
 
I agree with what you're all saying, it's so soon to do princesses again - but Disney is a money making machine so I believe as long as they have reason to thimk the dolls will sell, they'll do it. And princesses always sell. I admit I have no designer princesses, so I'd like it if a new style of princess was released, but I don't believe I'd be at all okay with re-releasing the same princesses. Short story- my dad collects particular model cars, the model company ran out of ideas so re-released old popular models (exact same ones), the cars were worthless because they were no longer 'limited' and the majority of long time collectors stopped collecting. Imagine if they re-released LE Snow... a)people who spent hundreds buying her would be sooo pissed and b) she'd be worth nothing. Yes I totally understand value is in the eye of the beholder, I adore my dolls, but like others have mentioned, it's nice to know your collection isn't worthless (if people are out there willing to pay hundreds or thousands, then you can be safe in the knowledge your collection is worth lot to others too). I would like couples if they redesign the princesses, I don't think it will Undervalue the prior collection at all - they're two totally different collections. I've never heard anyone say 'I won't buy the LE ariel that comes out because I have the designer one' - two different collections, both unique dolls though they're the same character. If Disney does designer princessses again but totally different ('designer' is just a name) then I don't see a huge problem . Just my 2c haha.

They always could be but we've gotten hints from numerous different CMs that it's couples so unless Disney is going as far as to trick it's own employees IN CASE they spill the beans (which is smart and devious) I think couples isn't a bad bet >_< Now what type of couples is completely up in the air

If it was the princesses plus the villains...it had better not be Designer lol since we have gotten most of them already in that form xD However, if it WASN'T Designer and was a new line entirely, the princesses and their villains would be really REALLY cool.
 
I still think what I thunk before. COuples is probably just a cover-up. I would like couples but they have to be good. And an equivalent to the Alice and QOH to tide me over. A second line of Villainesses would be nice or princesses in their secondary gowns like Cinderella in the pink dress, Aurora in blue, Ariel in blue, Belle in pink or green, Pocahontas in her ballgown, Jasmine in the lovely purple number, Mulan in her saving China dress with a medal and sword, Tiana in blue (OH YES!) and Rapunzel in her original dress. Snow White didn't have another dress but any original dresses before her primary color dress she had would do and Rapunzel as well. Merida would rock the lovely purple one she is in with the two pack for Mattel with Elinor. The blue one is overdone but if they did that one, ehhh. It could be designer princesses volume two! But if they do heroines by some random offchance, Meg, Esme, Alice, Wendy, Shanti, Jane, Kida, Nakoma and Anita would do. Anita is the odd girl out but they have surprised us so many times before.
