Tiana has a pretty strong fanbase. She seems to be rather popular but Disney doesn't promote her or Princess and the Frog. PatF wasn't received well by the mass public even though it was critically well received (was more popular by the critics than Tangled). Disney can and should market the princesses of color more. They are very popular by the fans and fans do complain (rightfully so) that they have next to no merchandise. Disney could make a lot of money if they marketed the princesses of color more. I don't get why they don't.
 
Hi guys, whilst I think this is a great topic I don't think it is really keeping within topic of the current thread. So I sort of hijacked the topic and started a new thread here

and started it off with my own thoughts on the topic. That way we can continue to discuss it as it is interesting to see people's takes on this but it seems to have deviated off topic of the Designer Fairytale line that I thought it appropriate to start a new thread about it.

I would love to buy all of the dolls but again, as others have also stated, I am limited on funds so I have to pick my favorites (Ariel and Bell). That is why I won't be getting Jasmine. Jasmine is also my least favorite. Not because of where she comes from (I have friends in the Middle East, and the people in the Middle East are very friendly and hospitable so I am terribly sad about everything that is going on over there, and I'm especially sad for all of the people in Syria). I dislike Jasmine for personal preferences, I think her head is too big as well as her eyes. If her face was like the Jasmine from the "Special Sparkles" collection they did years ago, I would totally get her, because I love what they did with her outfit.

Definitely agree with this, but Disney, to me, is notoriously marketing to white fans.
Why else do they keep releasing white princesses and characters?

The Special Sparkles line was pretty awesome. I really like the new dolls that are being produced, but the 90's and early 00's had some of the prettiest face sculpts and most accessories included. I prefer many of those Jasmine's to her new look as well. I plan to get all of this line except the Jasmine & Aladdin, I just don't like her outfit unfortunately.
 
Has anyone noticed that the price of Designer Fairytale Snow and Prince the 6000 edition has been slowly going up since she sold out? People are now starting to really bid on her and she's been selling for an average of $200......I wonder if this is going to be a trend....I bet by the time we get to Belle and Beast it is going to get crazy....I don't think Jasmine will be as crazy however I'm still making sure I show up and get her! She MUST be added to my collection!

Oh! And if Disney did decide to wait until 2015 to make the next set of Designer Fairytale Princesses and did a special Aurora that would be so AWESOME!!!! I would so be resorting to eBay for her! I really hope they do that now!
 
So I just checked the disneystore and it looks like the designer fairytale Ariel journal is sold out. Ironically I wanted to buy this journal and was going to buy it this week. Does anyone know If their local store still has the DFTC Ariel journal available? If so would someone be willing to help me out and grab one for me? I would be more than happy to pay for the item and the cost of shipping as well. Please feel free to send me a PM if you can help me out! I would be forever grateful!

I think the thing about this line (I could be wrong) is that they made the dolls based upon when the characters fell in love in the movie. To that end, I can't see them including all the other princesses since, for example, Tiana and Naveen were frogs when that happened for them. I'm not even sure when that happened for Mulan and Li Shang. And then how would they dress Pocahontas? She only has the one outfit, and I don't think there's much they can do with it.

Cinderella and Prince Charming could easily fit in, and it would be nice to have a Briar Rose doll since that's when she and Philip became smitten with each other. And, yes, Tiana and Naveen would make a really nice pair if they didn't go with the "scene they fell for each other" look.

I just wish they'd get her doll right. I love PatF and Tiana herself, but I've yet to see a DS Tiana doll that looks pretty. They all have a goofy kind of look to them, even her LE doll. Same with Mulan. They need to get her face right. I didn't realize Jasmine was so unpopular! I think she's not just the best from this set but the prettiest doll in general, with Ariel.

But on the topic of Jasmine, I don't understand the confusion about her ethnicity. She's clearly Arab. The market man in the beginning, who narrates the story, says he's selling the "finest merchandise this side of the river Jordan", so Agrabah (though fictional) exists somewhere between Israel and Jordan. Also, the artist said he based his vision for the movie on Iran, despite it not being set there. In my mind, Agrabah and the characters who live there feel very Labanese. But that's just my take on where it could be!

Lol I was about to bring up the frog thing about Tiana and Naveen. Imagine froggie designer dolls! 😛
I loved Princess and the Frog, but it is darker in that it's very real. As in, rooted in reality, with a definite time period and a place on the map, themes like how life just happens, death... I think that's what set it apart from a lot of the other "princess" films. Rapunzel has been described as "a modern princess," but really I think that title belongs to Tiana. She's hard-working, determined, relatable, and grounded. I also think the music from PatF has to grow on you, but it's not instantly classic or memorable like some other Disney soundtracks.

For the record, I LOVE Jasmine's fairytale doll and I think that she and Al by far have the best pose. Aladdin looks great too! It's not that I don't like them, it's just that there are others in the collection that appeal to me more because I love those characters. I think the best executed are 1. Ariel/Eric 2. Jasmine/Aladdin 3. Belle/Beast 4. Snow/Prince 5. Rapunzel/Flynn. So Jasmine's up there, but I actually only initally wanted Rapunzel and Flynn because they appeal to me more, even though they have the worst box pose (which is why I haven't gotten them yet 🙁 ). I think she is a popular princess, and it has nothing to do with her race, but because other princesses are simply more popular (Cindy, Rapunzel, Ariel).

And I super want Aurora in blue. D23, Fairytale, 17", doesn't matter. Or her BR dress. But her Briar Rose outfit is more appropriate for this collection, and since they did Ariel in her town dress, if this collection is continued I have high hopes!! And imagine Phillip in his cape!! with his peter pan hat :3

Cinderella for sure... and I don't think they'd skip Tiana but they'd have to find a way around the frog thing or just do the swamp dress again.... And if Frozen is a "success" I can see them leaving out either Mulan or Pocahontas in favor of a Frozen couple. But whoever is left out gets to hang with Merida I guess.

Oh, I forgot to give my opinion on the whole ethnicity thing, regarding popularity and the attention dolls get. I find *most* little girls want dolls they relate to, which may range from skin color to hair color. In that sense, Jasmine does appeal to brown girls (Indian, Pakistani, etc), and then all the other dolls are loved by their obvious hair color and skin color counterparts. I think Disney has definitely tried to corner the market on all the different ethnicities, but if Rapunzel sells more than Tiana, they're naturally going to push the blond doll more.

Also, I think *sometimes* parents promote matching up dolls to the way their child looks. I remember CRYING for a black Cabbage Patch Kid when I was little, but my mom refused because she was afraid it might look bad if black kids saw me with a black doll at school. But then on the flipside, some cultures prefer the blond / blue-eyed look even though they don't look like that, so then Rapunzel sells even better in that demographic, too. My city is EXTREMELY multi-cultural, so I get to see who gets excited for what characters when I'm shopping at the Disney Store. It's actually very interesting, and I can see why certain characters get more attention from Disney based on who sells. It's just too bad because some of the more interesting princesses will never get the chance they deserve because of that 🙁

I see your point, although they have multiple falling in love moments in some of the movies for them. Like Snow and her Prince meet when she is in rags and they are in love then, and Belle and Beast start falling for each other in the "Something There" sequence (rose dress). Aurora and Philip fall in love in the forest, but I bet they will choose her princess gown instead of the forest dress. So really they just need any romantic moment. For Tiana and Naveen it will be in her wedding dress (one of the two but most likely the swamp one).

I totally agree with this. Tiana is the most modern real girl of all the princesses. I think the only negative points to her movie is that she is a frog for so much of it and the songs are not as instantly classic. But otherwise, she is more modern and based in the real world than a lot of the other princesses.
 
The madness is continuing!!

I just confirmed with disneystore.com that the Rapunzel and Flynn set has sold out! Less than 1 week and less than 1/2 the time Snow and Charming took to sell out!:wavey:

...sigh... This is starting to look a lot like 2011... DFDC Jasmine and Aladdin next week will really be the clencher. If they sell out in only two days, the same way the 2011 Designer Belle doll did... :|

I like your response, very interesting. I have a beautiful little blond haired and blue eyed five year old daughter. Our family members are always wanting to buy her Rapunzel dolls and other "look a-like dolls" but she always asks for the ethnic dolls. I asked her which of these designer dolls she likes the best and her immediate response was Jasmine. She loves the peacock colors, her dark skin, and her big beautiful eyes. Her all time favorite princess is Tiana because in her words, "she just looks like the most beautiful person inside and out." I don't think that with little kids it is necessarily about race. I think that adults put that on kids and on the Disney Store when in reality kids just like what appeals to them. They are so much more open minded. The Disney Store does work to represent different ethnicities and they seem to have a pretty broad spectrum. Just look at those amazing Small World Dolls that are coming out. I just love them and the wonderful differences between people and places that they represent. Anyways, my only must have designer is Belle, because I love France, her story and the beast is so well done!

I didn't want to go into too much detail about this point, but you have no idea how true it is!!! I've witnessed some strange reactions from parents when their kid wants an ethnic princess. I wonder if part of it comes from trying too hard to be PC, like they worry their white daughter will offend some non-white parent if they carry around a Tiana doll, like my mom worried. LOL, my mom was okay with me having dolls when I was a little boy, but she worried when I wanted one of a different color. So strange! And as a kid, it's not even that you're more open-minded, you just don't understand that the difference in skin color is any different from a differece in hair color.

It's very true that the children are more open minded ! My 2 year old daughter has a dark skin and even if she likes Tiana , her favorite one is Snow white ...

It is strange that a boy with dolls was easier for your Mom than you having ethnic dolls. To be honest, the first toddler doll I bought my daughter was Rapunzel (because she looks like my daughter), but as soon as she was big enough to tell me that she wanted Jasmine and Tiana instead, I completely changed gears and bought her those dolls. I wish people wouldn't worry about what others think so much, but they definitely do. I can understand your mother (and all mothers) wanting others to approve of her and your kids being accepted by others is a big part of a mother's identity, but parents need to get over themselves and think about what their kids need or want. I am glad that your mother let you play with dolls even if she was concerned about the race. Sometimes the choices kids make can be hard for parents, but we do need to try and accept those choices, whatever they may be :madhatter::madhatter:

There is beauty in all of the princesses and that's why us adults love them so much. Kids are just smarter than us and never even bring up the race question when it comes to which dolls to choose. Also, this discussion has convinced me to buy Jasmine even though she is not my personal favorite. My daughter can enjoy looking at her with me! I'm glad I decided while I can still get her next week!
