Warning: This is a very long story with many images, but I had to tell it
Meet Herbie:
Herbie is my daughter's 6th birthday present. He came to us in June of 2011 from a local shelter. He was rescued from a landfill when he was only 3 weeks old. These pictures above were taken on the day of his arrival in our home. He was about 3 months old.
He is our most beloved baby; not just my daughter and myself, but even my grumpy husband adores him. Herbie has a thing for trees. He loves to climb them, and once he even got stuck on top of a tree in our backyard. So, we no longer let him out, hence he saves all of his enthusiasm for trees for the holidays. He is much bigger now, and he loves to climb our X-mas tree and steal the ornaments to play with them
It turns out that this year we won't be "Home for the Holidays" after all. We will be driving from TX to CA for our own X-mas road trip adventure. Therefore, I decided to forgo the X-mas tree. You see, Herbie got big enough that he can topple the tree, and I do not want to come home to a squashed kitty. So, I had to break these news to my daughter. She was sad, but c'mon: X-mas time at DLR, so she could live w/o the tree after all
Enter Hope, or as her DPF name goes Hopemax. My wonderful, smart, articulate friend who I admire to no end. I mentioned this "no tree" decision to Hope in one e-mail. I think these news took her by surprise as Hope loves her X-mas decor and she goes big! Does anyone remember her tree pics from last year? She told me she has an idea, but did not tell me what. So, I found a dinky little styrofoam tree and my daughter placed it on her desk in her room. All was good.
That is until this morning. It is an unusually chilly morn for our TX. I am in my jammies with a wool cardigan to boot - and yes, our house it at 75F. I heard the door bell, but my hubby took care of it. I saw the big package about 1 hr later. Of course you see a package and you wonder. Then, I saw Hope's name & addy on it. And then, I opened it. OH EM GEE!!!
There was a complete mini X-mas tree in that package, and it was decorated with MANY handmade ornaments of our most favorite characters! I was in utter disbelief, at the same time I was excited like a kid.
Here are the ornaments Hope made:
I love them all, but of course my name sake Merryweather is most special to me. I will keep that one out even after the tree is tucked away. And please note that my dearest Aurora is in blue. You should see the details on these ornaments! The eyes, the little tiny gem stones. They are all hand made. Un-believable!
She wrote us a wonderful X-mas note & sent us some Mickey prezels too. These pretzels will be so yummy on the long drive
And here are the 3 sides of the tree once I put the ornaments back on it:
And here is our beloved Herbie with the decorated tree:
I placed the tree in my daughter's room and closed the door to keep it safe from his little paws, but he already attempted to bite the tree and the ribbons of the ornaments while I was taking these pictures.
Hope !! My wonderful, talented, crafty, crazy and wonderful (yeah, one more time) pin nut friend! You rendered me totally speechless. This tree of yours - without a single doubt - is the most special X-mas gift we have ever received from anyone.
My daughter is in school right now and I can not wait to pick her up from school today. I will take her pictures with her new tree and e-mail them to you later this evening.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
And thanks to my DPF friends for their patience in reading it. It is a long story I know, but it was so worth telling it May everyone's holiday dreams come true. Peace out
