Mulan doesn't need to be in a pretty dress. The way Disney does her dresses, a lot of collectors are glad that it's Mulan as Ping with Shang because Disney has done horrible things to her dresses. 😛

The ending cost will depend on how long the sorcerer ticket holders can hold onto merchandise (many probably can hold onto for a while, considering they spent $2000-2500 just for their ticket alone and had to prepay that last year). I already know someone who has a sorcerer ticket that has pre-bought (not selling anything) about $8000 worth of merchandise just to keep for his collection.

The thing with the D23 Hans/Elsa is that at least half of the 1023 edition went to non-sorcerer people who just flipped it. If the only supply for the D23 Mulan/Shang will be sorcerers, then there's that issue to deal with. Some have already listed on ebay and have gone for between $300 - 500. Will that price hold? No one knows. But people are also selling off-ebay too.
 
On a side note, we have had 3 D23 exclusive 12" / Designer dolls (not including Minnie or the OUAT):

Silver Cinderella (LE250): She went to a high of $1500-2000, but has now gone down, I think to $800-1500.
Snow White / The Prince (LE400): They went to a high of $600, but has settled around $400-500
Elsa/Hans (LE1023): They went to a high of about $600, but has settled around $250-350

i have to agree with you. Disney's choices are questionable. One the one side, it seems that they are actually listening to fans (Cinderella's (2016) strawberry blonde hair, more characters outside of their princesses shemes), but on the other side i am asking myself why they are producing specific characters as designer dolls like Robin Hood (despite the fact that i am very curious how they are executing this) or The Incredibles (i am not sure if anybody needed designer dolls from this movie?).

People are asking over and over for specific female characters which are not included in the princess-franchise: Esmeralda, Megara, Jane, etc and still Disney is like "well, we rather do some Pinocchio and Robin Hood". We all know it is about money and how Disney can benefit from their sales and fans benefit otherwayround, so it would just make sense if Disney would go the "safe route", which they are following of course with sets like Little Mermaid and Tangled, and not risking "shelf-warmers" (as some characters do not sell so well) -> But just like you, i can already see Moana and Robin Hood collecting dust in stores (but you all can proof me wrong).

Let's talk about the new Moana Designer: I really enjoyed the movie (well, okay, actually it was all about Maui) but let's be real, this Moana Designer doll needs to be very special and different from the previous 17'' releases to win a place on my shelf. I already got both releases and i really don't know if i need another one (with the same outfit, duh), despite the fact Moana not being one of my favourites like Ariel. The only answer why Disney is releasing another Moana even though her 17'' releases do not sell i can think of is that Disney must have designed the new Designer line before Moana's initial release in december. She will have a hard time selling - i would have loved to see a Moana with Tefiti, but she is paired with these itsybitsy enemies so that does make it only worse tbh.

Ariel and Rapunzel are "all-rounder", Disney could make them as bad as only imaginable and they still would sell like hotcakes. So it does make sense they are included in the line, even though they are the fourth (!) releases of their characters. I would have loved to see other characters (Esmeralda!!) instead but as i already mentioned, it makes sense. Disney can never go wrong with them.
 
Are there some doll collectors that only collect 12" versus 17"? If my wife started, she would probably start with the 12" ones, just because they are Barbie-doll sized. Maybe that's why Disney thought it would be a good idea to make a Moana as a 12" doll?
 
Have to agree with a lot of what has been said... some odd choices for this year and excited to see the direction of new characters but the two I think would be the most successful are the exclusives! Haha. I personally think Moana, incredibles or Robin Hood should have been the exclusives...


Based on the ornament art it looks like Robin Hood & MM will be in their wedding outfits which is nice, but I'd prefer their more iconic outfits assuming they're probably not going to be getting second dolls. I'm excited they're being made but also fearful they will not sell and terrify Disney to venture outside of the list of ten or so 'top sellers'. Even though I'm thrilled to see them I won't be getting them unless MM is somehow in her standard pink outfit...

The incredibles is nice but kind of odd timing and not really heavily requested... it would make more since to release that with the second movie... and then the Pixar part is great but I can't think of many movies that would make successful designer dolls... brave, toy story, incredibles, and inside out I guess... really are the only movies with characters I could imagine in doll form and outside of toy story and brave who already have 17' versions... I don't see them selling as hot as other possible movie choices... Toy Story really being the only one I'd have hope in.

I would love to see a Celia doll from monsters inc though... or a never gonna happen tour guide barbie 17'!!!


Ariel (not fond of cape on triton but who knows maybe will look good...), Mulan, Tangled, and Pinocchio are all good choices in my opinion... I have high hopes for those.

101 D, incredibles, Robin Hood, Moana are either poorly timed, not well thought/executed, or just bad choices. I'm cool with a cruella doll but timing wise we already have a designer for her so a movie accurate doll will be nice but I can wait. Moana is a great movie but arguably I don't see it having a strong enough fan attraction to justify a third doll. The movie is fantastic but I only own her classic doll, and don't have any interest in more dolls... as it's a good movie but not a favorite. If Moana grandmother came in the set or even Maui or her father or the goddess someone mentioned above... it'd peak my interest but it's looking like a smaller sized version of her first 17'...



all in all it's not a bad year by any means I'm sooo excited to see how they come out and have high hopes for even the dolls I'm not entirely sold on... I haven't bought a designer since Rap + Flynn or Tianna + N... so my opinion is probably irrelevant but I definitely would have been interested in the blue fairy.

As of now I like the idea of Rapunzel & Flynn, Maybe Ariel, and 101 D and are the only sets I currently may consider buying. We'll see maybe this wave will blow me away & bring me back into buying 12' sets...

I think they will have more characters we've been asking for. I think this Designer series will be more than two years long, and then eventually they will be released as classics. They make more money from one mold for a character that way.

I was really surprised they made the LE Prince molds into $16 dolls, so I think we'll see the Villains from 2015/2016, and then probably Robin Hood and Maid Marian in their regular outfits (which is why the LE dolls are in Wedding outfits), The Incredibles, Cruella, Triton will probably have a new mold and be without the cape for his classics doll, and other characters from this series after a few years passes.

They probably throw in characters like Ariel to assure sets will sell out. I'm sure they plan out the selections with purpose. I know not everyone is excited about this grouping, but in the future I believe we'll see red Jasmine/Jafar, Meg/Hercules and more.

do people get shopping passes every day at the expo or just for one day (your choice of Friday, Saturday, or Sunday) for the three day weekend?

If you're lucky to get in there to get one, you can get one for every day (just show your ticket, I think they scan it)

I agree with your point on why Moana should have been the D23 exclusive over Mulan (personally I think they should have just made the D23 exclusives variants like all the other expos which would have given most of us the chance to get the dolls in some form), but I have to disagree with the bit on Robin Hood and Cruella. I do think it's possible that these dolls will be shelf warmers in some places (Robin Hood in particular), but these are both characters that I have seen requested a LOT over the years.

The only Cruella LE doll we have from the Disney Store is the original designer doll, and people have been wanting Disney to make more dolls of her that are more accurate to how she looks in the original movie (A 17" doll in particular but i've still seen plenty of people just wanting another Cruella doll in general). As for Robin Hood, I have seen a lot of people saying how much they wanted a designer set of him and Marian. The only problem is that most people thought that it was such an unrealistic idea because A.) They're animals and B.) It's one of Disney's less marketable films, so most people who wanted a set like that knew that the chances of it happening were little to none. Most people didn't give much of an outcry over the lack of Robin Hood merchandise because of that, because it was such an unrealistic idea to assume Disney would ever give them what they wanted. So, naturally, I have seen a LOT of people that are very happy over Robin and Marian being one of this year's sets. Same goes for Cruella.

I can agree with many of your points, and I do think Disney is doing some questionable stuff this year, but the idea that there was no demand for Robin Hood and Cruella just simply isn't true.

^ This 100%. Disney wouldn't bother making three separate Designer brands (Folktale, Fairytale, and Pixar) in the same year if they didn't plan on doing many more unique and different characters. I think it's safe to say that we are going to see a nice mix of the old and new over the next few years, and Disney will probably give us several of the characters we have been asking for (i'm still annoyed that we didn't get ANYTHING for Hercules where it's his anniversary though). It's different for sure, and there will no doubt be plenty of the same old characters, but I am excited to see where Disney takes this line.

Also, I really do hope they do give us classic dolls of some of these characters. I would buy a classic Peter Pan and Alice doll in a heartbeat.

I'm happy they're going out of their safe box and making new characters as opposed to the same-old-same-old, but I'm still wondering when Hunchback will get some attention, from both them and Funko.
 
Wow... the art for this collection looks very weird.

Moana looks exactly like the first 17" LE doll...... why.... this is like the frozen Designer dolls, they look exactly like their 17" counterparts. From the picture I saw in that link, it doesn't look like there's anything different about her.

Ariel and king triton looks like an interesting set, but it looks like Ariel is wearing a bikini top and has a very weird second layer on her fin.... also, king triton looks kinda plain, I hope his cape is not just a plain piece of fabric and I also hope that his trident has a metallic finish to it.

The only way cruella will look good is if they go all out. Really thin tall body sculpt. Correct hairstyle, huge coat... like huge coat that resembles animal fur, cause her other designer coat doesn't look like it was made from animal fur. Also, they gotta include them dogs in there. This really should have been a roger and Anita set to be honest, but cruella is still one of the most popular Disney villains.

Rapunzel and Eugene is a weird set. I just don't know what they can do with rapunzel's dress that they haven't done before. It looks like a combination of her 17" pink dress (top and sleeves) with the typical designer series skirt. Slit in the middle, with symmetric embroidery on both sides. We've seen it done on so many designer dolls to the point where Disney thought they could get away with using it on the latest 17" Belle.... Eugene will probably be tied up in a chair. Rapunzel does need her frying pan.

I'm just worried about the facial expressions... is Triton going to be angry? Is Ariel going to be upset? Will Flynn have a smoulder going on? Cause he probably has the worst male face sculpt, just look at his dead face in the other Designer set.

Robin Hood and maid Marian will sit on the Disneystore shelves for soooo long that Disney will eventually have to discount them.

Here's the thing. A lot of people will request a doll, but when push comes to shove, will use any excuse to not buy that doll. Hence why the fringe designer sets never sell out. I've seen it happen time and time again. People will ask for something, Disney will finally release said something, then people will see the dolls and complain about the most minute details just to avoid spending the $140. It's like people who complained that the queen of hearts in the Alice set wasn't tall enough so they decided not to buy the set, knowing full well that they'll never take the dolls out of the display case... that's just the nature of the Disney doll collectors. Also, don't forget that interest in the Disney LE dolls has gone down... like really really gone down.. so what might have seemed like a sure bet in the past, can no longer be said.

Disney should have just released a heroines set and limited each doll to 2,000 or 2,500.

As sad as it is to admit, this is very true. Even I have been guilty of this. For example, I really wanted Peter Pan and Alice dolls but I ended up disappointed with how both of the designer sets turned out (in retrospect a lot of my problems with them probably could have been fixed by deboxing them and posing them differently in their cases, though I still think they could have been better overall). I think there are a lot of reasons why people react the way they do to certain sets, but I think this problem could be fixed by going back to the way edition numbers were handled with the first princess designer dolls. They could give higher edition numbers to the characters that are guaranteed to sell and give lower edition numbers to the more "niche" characters. I know that format got a TON of backlash, and that Disney will probably never use it again as a result, but I think they could make it work this time now that we are branching out to more than just the princesses by themselves.
 
I'm wondering if Ariel and Triton will have similar tails to her 17 inch doll... I'd kind of like that... opinions?
 
I wish they picked a different scene for The Little Mermaid. They should have done the final scene between Ariel and Triton where they hug and she says "I love you daddy." It would have been much more unique since they haven't done her wedding dress before.
 
Ayy but a Wedding Dress Ariel without a wedding Eric?

I could see Ariel in the sparkling water dress when Triton finally accepted her wanderlust and thirst for adventure more likely. That was a magic moment.
 
The 17 inch Eric doll is in his wedding outfit and the didn't make a 17 inch wedding Ariel to go with him. I'm honestly surprised at the lack of 17 inch Ariel's given how popular she is. But Ariel in her sparkly water dress would have been nice too.

Haa I was thinking the same thing. He should be significantly bigger than his daughter(16 y o girl) and his tail just as beautiful and rooted hair! Also I am looking forward to Cruella set. Don't care much for Blue Fairy.

Which dolls have been SURPRISE releases at the D23 Expo? In 2015 the surprise was Once Upon a Time and Jasmine Red Dress.... or did we know about both of these dolls in advance at all???

Are we expecting any surprise releases this year?
