Fantasy pins and pin prices

Just saw a Good Dinosaur fantasy pin...

...they don't even let a new movie have a chance to come out first!?

Dear lord!

To be fair, Disney already has their own out and the Disney Store near me is already packed with Good Dinosaur toys (including things with characters I don't even think were in the trailers).

This is true, but one argument that some people have given in favor of fantasy pins is that they are using scenes or continuing a series that Disney hasn't - I don't see that as the case here. They are obviously just trying to turn a profit before Disney even has a chance to release more pin designs for the movie. The one I saw looked like something Disney would probably do later on as it is a commonly used image in their advertising.

I'm really afraid that I'm going to lose interest in this hobby the more this goes on and is accepted.

:(

Why are people 'losing interest' in the hobby of authentic Disney pins, just because of the fantasy pins? Why let it bother you? The only reason I can come up with is some people are authentic pin sellers and their profits are falling off? I honestly don't understand. Why not just ignore the FPs?

This post isn't aimed at anyone, but for the life of me, I don't understand why people let it bother them so much. Just ignore it.

This is something i questioned in one of the fP groups just yesterday. I DONT get it at all.

But then again there are people who have already pre-ordered all of the merch months in advance for fear they will like it and miss out.

Some people said they're just big fans of Dinos and they liked the pin idea so they supportted it, and probably would have had it not been Disney which is kind of why I can understand it but i don't like it.

Kind of like how EVERYONE bought up all the frozen stuff months in advance and created a multitude of hype. Had fantasy pins been bigger 2 years ago, there would've been frozen pins too...

But I don't think it's "generally accepted"

All it takes is 20 people to back a pin idea they like at a reasonable price and bam it's done. Most people are of the mindset if it's stolen/i don't like it/ its ugly then don't buy it. But then there's people who just have money and back EVERYTHING they think might re-sell better.

And it's the same for real pins.

I can only speak for myself, but for one thing, for me it's just plain uncomfortable to be a part of a community where something that I VERY STRONGLY believe is wrong is getting more and more commonly practiced and accepted. When newcomers join the hobby they will be more likely to believe that this is okay now, than in the years past when anything "too much like Disney" was being made and pointed out as something to beware of, not in favor of, and continue to support making these things that they have no right to make. When fake pins look as good as official ones, or even better, you're just asking for trouble. It is nobody's right to make these. It is not just "fan art" if you are mass producing it for trading and selling. It's theft plain and simple. You aren't buying the labor that went into it (such as an art commission), you're buying an object that has a character you want illegally printed on it.

And for the people making the designs themselves, the ONLY way I would be okay with it is if you made your own pin from scratch using your own materials in your garage and only made a single piece of art for your own use/to wear it yourself. Not to trade, or sell or "share" with the world in mass production. Even if they are handed out for free they are still illegal and all you are really doing is trying to get your name out there using Disney's characters without paying them. It's an ego trip in my opinion. To think "I can do better, watch me!"

You are absolutely right that we can just ignore the fake pins - and I try to - but lately every week or so I see another one pop up under one of my collection searches, and it is really upsetting to see all these new pins (some of which are very nice) that I can't have, while I've been waiting for official releases. I will not support fake pins. And I want them to get out of my searches while I am looking for official ones.

I only just learned that I could use "-fantasy" to remove most of them from my searches, thankfully.

:)

I guess the reason I keep thinking it's getting more accepted is that I keep reading about "all these Facebook groups", but I will admit that I have no idea how big these groups are. Are they just a handful of people? Or a lot more?

Also, I will admit that I haven't been searching specifically for fantasy pins, so I am only going off of what I've seen in the categories I search for. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that the themes I find have a popular fantasy pin turnout, and most other films aren't getting as many. This could very well be.

Either way, I am hoping that it dies down on it's own or that Disney nails the companies that make them eventually. I know that wont stop people from finding new companies who will do it, but I figure it would at least make some people more wary about it and slow down the rate these are coming out.

Well, I can understand it because I've seen a few posts on Facebook that when people want to try to trade for something, the first question they get is "what fantasy pins do you have?" So if people are getting shot down because they don't have the "right" pins, it can be discouraging. Same as it ever was. But instead of simply not having "access" to the good pins (DSF, DA, etc), it's now about willingness to participate in a black market, and that's even more discouraging.

But I've been basically hunkering down in "old pin" mode, waiting for this particular storm to pass. Trademark laws exist for a reason, and Disney has been so tough going after day centers and such, before, I can't believe that they would let this all happen long term. But maybe Disney will. And honestly, that's discouraging too.

THIS.

Also, simply avoiding fantasy pins is getting harder. I'm not a member of any fantasy pin groups on Facebook but more and more people in real pin groups are including fantasy pins in their trade posts. And if people are moving more towards fantasy pins, they have fewer legit pins for trade.

I'm not a member of the Fantasy groups, but sometimes the show up as "suggested" groups and it says how many members are in a particular group. The fantasy groups seem to be around 500-700 members.

There is one particular group that is that big but it's basically because it doesn't /not/ let anyone in. It's anyone who can get in---gets in.

And it's one of the worst. It's were alot of the theft and stuff happens but it's also where alot of people get caught doing things. Like the person counterfitting the ariel pins. I wouldn't have known if i wasn't in that group.

I mean you can be scared of "all these groups" but remember that anyone can make a group.

I have a lion king Pin Group on Facebook, I don't mind if people have fantasy pins, but i'm pretty sure i'm not the only lion king pin group out there. And you have to think too 90% of the people in one group are in allllll of the same groups.

@Ninpin:

Obviously the biggest categories are like Ariel, Rapunzel and elsa...but it seems like Hercules, WiR and a few others are extremely popular too, like movies you wouldn't normally even think of.

I guess the best thing to do is just be aware of the official releases of what you collect so that you know when pins are "fantasy". I have seen some that would fit my collections but I won't even bother with them, I only want official pins.

I have to say I don't like the idea of Fantasy pins for me they are fakes and I have no interest in collecting them.

They are all just a bunch scrap crap half the ones I have seen in person the colors are way off.I smell lawsuit here...

Also, couldn't an activist against this black market stuff simply gain the trust of the groups, join, and then report everyone involved? I know someone else said that they were reporting everything they were finding. I am surprised nobody in those groups are concerned about getting in trouble. But then, I guess if Disney hasn't said a word on it by now...

...or have they and I just haven't stumbled on it yet? lol

I believe Disney has contacted many companies already. They no longer make Disney pins or they have raised the prices for making them 50% or more.

Which is why alot of the pins have gotten more expensive.

Alot of the people in it for just the money are leaving simpy because the profit isn't really there anymore.

Alot of people see a 20- 40$ presale, but even if that pin gets made, they sit on the ones that weren't at pre-sale because there's no market beyond the backers. So then they sell them at half the pre-sale price or less and it's killed what market that HAD been made.

It's all comnig to an end, it might be why Disney isn't taking alot of action against it. It'll die off on it's own and come back again in 10 years and start all over.

I also do not want to step on anyone's toes. :soapbox:This is just my take on it...
My apologies, but I do not understand what all the fuss is about. Most of you know at least a little bit of my background. I collect mainly Mulan pins. I started before I had heard about DPF and before I heard about PinPics and before I knew about Dizpins. I started in WDW on a trip and continued from my home in NJ through eBay (if I am allowed to say that) Did I say I collect Mulan pins? When I did find it, I looked at Pinpics , I saw several ugly pins that were "NOT AUTHORIZED". You know what? they were Mulan pins................................................... and I got most of them.
The first reference I could find was around 2003-04. Pin 30055 is a Disney pin listed Feb 2003 and Pin 30067 is also a Disney pin released in May of 2004. All the pins between them are Fantasy Pins! Not Fake. They don't have a Disney logo on them, they were pins someone made by someone who could draw about as good as me and believe me that's not saying much LOL. Why not the push back in 2004? I'm going to say because they were UGLY PINS. I still got them.:) Some of these new FP pins are something to behold. They measure up to some of the best the W.D.Company has and many fill a void. I just purchased a pin that has the doll laying in the snow from the film. How long would I wait for that? I get most of my pins for my collection and will not worry about what will happen to them because chances are I'll be dead when my pins go back on the market. I look forward to seeing more FP's (Fantasy pins) as well as RP's (real pins). A FP LE 100 is a whole lot easier to get than a "real" one, but I don't care if it's 100 or not. It's something for me to enjoy. I also appreciate FD's (fake drawings of Disney characters). Who would draw such a thing? Be very ashamed. How about costumes and mickey ears? I won't EVEN go there. That's for another thread.:)

I like some of them. There is a series of Carl (and soon to be Ellie) pins that are so cute.
Carl as Captain America
Carl as Woody
Carl as Astronaut (maybe Buzz Lightyear)
Carl as Captain America Winter Soldier (Variant)

So cute!

Saw a post on Facebook yesterday that Disney has started reporting sellers to Ebay for fantasy pins and having their stores shut down. Do not know if this is truth or rumor.

++100000 if it's true. If not we can always wish. Funny part to me is I wish all the money makers and resellers could spend all there time in make beleave land and the price of real pins could go down for people that want to collect them. Agian just a wish. We all know things with strong ties to money don't just go away. Lol
