Hi all! So after LIAA has ended, I've realized that I've started collecting Artist Proof pins. I just think they're really neat and part of the artistic process. So while everyone still has some floating around in their trade books, I'd figured I would ask if anyone would like to trade! Just shoot me a PM I'm mostly looking for sets I can complete (mystery sets, monthly releases, etc) and PODH pins for a friend.

I believe that they are the "quality control" pins, so those that are sent back to the artist before production to confirm that everything is a-okay. They go straight to the artist, and are never sold to the general public.

According to what I remember from the panel discussion at the LiaA event, after the pin art is sent to the manufacturer, they send a few (rumors say no more than 3) pre-production pins (PP) back to the team for initial review. These pins are to be sure the concept is properly rendered on the product, and to make changes to layout, color, etc. These pins may not look much like the finished product, but most often they are very close. After the PP is approved (or adjustments requested), the manufacturer makes a handful (some rumors say 3% of the total run size, up to a maximum of 25 total) of artist proof pins (AP) for final review and approval. The AP pins usually look (almost) exactly like the finished product. They just have an AP stamped or laser etched on the back, usually near the pin trading logo. Sometimes the mark is so small as to be almost indistinguishable (I have a mini Tinkerbell from the Cute Stylized set where the AP mark is so tiny, I had to take a photo and blow it up, to be able to see the mark - but once I did, it's clear as day! Moral, if you see something that looks like a smudge or a dot on the back of your pin, examine it closely - you may have something kind of hard to find...).
