New pins all worth $100 + no matter what

I saw you selling your Beloved Tales pins on FB!

Pfft...yeah, until someone complained in the “grail” group because not ALL the pins in the collection were $250 plus so they told me to delete it. Meanwhile there are tons of other posts with pins under $250 and they don’t say a word. Won’t be bothering with that page anymore. I moved them to Pinjunkies but I’m in no hurry to get rid of them because I still have lots of other pins to sell before I slim down my collection. Had some bites but not where I’d be willing to let them go at this point.

No, not yet. They are technically part of my collection and so far I've really only been purging traders. But they are just sitting in a box and I have no plans to display them so I thought if I could sell them easy all in one swoop I'd just pay off my car! lol

Not to "ruffle any feathers" but, isn't this showing exactly what this thread is about - pins selling for more than 10 times what they originally cost?? Just saying.......

I do think there's a big difference between them selling at a premium five or ten years after they're released versus the day of.

LE100 or LE250 pins from 5, 10, 15 years ago are actually "rare" and "hard to find" now. (The popular ones, at least.) Most have made it into Forever Collections by this point, and if you're a newer collector or someone who is adding a new theme to your collection, there are limited opportunities to find and snag those "golden oldie" pins from before your time.

A LE500 pin for which there are approximately 425 available through resellers within one hour of release is neither "rare" nor "hard to find" by definition and has not been in circulation long enough for accurate assessment of "demand" and certainly not "value."

If someone drops a LE of ONE today, and it's a Frozen/Tangled crossover involving cats (and that has no writing or dates on it, since that's a lot of collectors' pet peeve, ha ha), yeah, instant skyrocketing prices may be legit. But the rest of this is just NONSENSE. As in: Lack. Of. Sense. Stop throwing your hard-earned dollars at every fool who waves a new pin in your face and says, "This is your only chance to get this amazing pin!" Really, bro? Cuz I'm looking at FB and eBay and this forum, and I'm seeing that maybe it's not my "only" chance.

I, too, agree with this, TiggerSue. If a pin is really worth $200, $300, $800+ then start the auction at what you paid for the pin and let it ride. Pins are not antique artifacts, they are not rare paintings, they certainly are not homesteaded real estate and for the love of the mouse, do not treat a pin like it's a darn 401K retirement annuity -- there is no guaranteed equity in an enamel painted piece of nickel and steel just because you've owned it for any amount of time, nor because you think it'll gain popularity. If you've had the pin for five, ten, fifteen years and now wish to part ways, you've gotten your enjoyment out of it. Let. It. Go.

Look, I'm not saying you should sell your pin collection exactly for what you paid, if you purchased your pins at cost. But don't assume you are "owed" any specific amount of money on it. If you paid $75 for a DA LE100 fifteen years ago and now want to list it and start the auction at $150, that seems reasonable. And if the collectors want it, they will bid to death and your profit will sky rocket. But don't assume just because it's a DA LE100 you can ask an opening bid $900 and that the majority of buyers will think that price is appropriate.

Scalpers sometimes ruin the experience for me trying to collect things. I've been screwed over many times because people want to buy out a store and resell for a price that's just plain stupid.

Ugh. Kinda off topic but the pin set I wanted on the evil auction site that was listed for 90 bucks was sold and then relisted within a few hours for 400 dollars. I’m just SO disgusted right now. I was willing to pay the 90 as that was at cost but 400? No way!!!!

Different seller. So then I looked a little further into it (thinking I wouldn’t be as angry... ha!) I saw the pin set listed by this person three times!!! It’s at 200, 300, and 400. I had only seen the 400 dollar listing when I rage quit my phone. But this is almost worse! How can you offer the same item in three listings?

I’m still new to online auctions so most of this probably isn’t news to you all, but I’m just shocked at the lengths people will go to make a buck.

You can always message the person who was selling it for $90 and make them an offer.

All of this!
I have many times written to Evil Bay sellers and asked for a specific price on an item (what I’m willing to pay) even if there isn’t a “best offer” option. A small percentage of times this has actually paid off and I’m making “insane” offers of 75% off of their asking price, but what feels a reasonable price based an factual information. If you don’t mind some rejection and really want to try, I think it can be worth a shot!

As one of the "old timers" in the hobby - almost 17 years - "patience" is what it is all about. The Auction sites and prices will only continue as long as people are wiling to pay the insane prices. As an old saying goes "there is a butt for every seat".

I, personally, try to do Trades when possible, even for Event or hard-to-find pins. BUT it is getting harder and harder to do this based on where the hobby is going and people's focus on the Auction site prices.
