Hi,
I was wondering if people are still interested in purchasing older and retired pins. It seems like a lot of posts refer to new releases as being prized.
I have lots of pins that are about 10 years old that I would like to sell eventually.

The newer breed of DSF buyers/sellers/traders seem to only know about DSF stuff. They see the older stuff as too hard so they ignore it. Only a few jump over to DA/DS stuff. The DSF stuff is all artificially inflated because that is all soooo many people know about. They go to DSF, they leave DSF. They might know about WDI maybe DLRP/WDW/DLR, but only because they need the Frozen pins from those places. Ironically I feel some of the middle-range older stuff has fallen in value because of the lack of knowledge or appreciation for how rare or HTF it really is. The Now generation is in full swing. I am 32yrs old and I can see it. The 20 somethings. They go from what's hot now, and often not even what they like, they go for what will get them street cred instantly. Whether it's PTD's, BT's, Frozen, Marquee's, etc. So many don't even appreciate the rise and fall of Tangled. Frozen has replaced it as the hot thing. I know the new "hot thing" has happened many times over the years, but Frozen seems to be the granddaddy of all "new hot things." I don't see anything on the horizon to dethrone it. Big Hero 6, nope. That just announced Polynesian Princess thing will get a little attention but will turn out to be the next Brave. I don't see anything but maybe a Frozen 2 moving the needle and that will only make Frozen 1 stuff go higher. So, Mark's advice...even if you hate it, buy up the Frozen and hide it for a few years. Or if you don't care about others, buy it up and sell it right away for profit like most of the DSF people these days. God help us when the first Frozen PTD comes out. I want statistics on how many speeding tickets, fights, riots, stabbings, PTD line clothes changes, homeless people employments, etc. happen for that one!
 
Hey thanks...sort of suspected that. I will still try and sell some "old" collectibles to fans like me. I guess it is in younger people's nature to go with the trendy stuff as long as it last...till the next thing.

It is interesting economics for sure. The older folks have valued their pins very high, probably rightfully so, but then they are so highly valued it's a barrier to entry for the newer traders to quickly dismiss them. Then the newer traders create their own new economy of new pins and inflate the prices. The worlds collide at large events like the WDW events, DSF trading nights, etc. Most of the time the older traders are frustrated they can't get the new pin for a decent trade and the newer people are upset with them because their new pin is $80 on eBay, the older persons pin is $65 on eBay yet the older person flat out rejects them. Tortoise and the hair situation. I tend to think in the long run the older stuff wins out, I'm interested to see in 2-3 years how Tangled continues to do and how Frozen does. As well as the rise/fall/rise of PTD's, Marquee, BT's, PTN's, and WDI Hats. The most consistent, low edition size genre's still being released.
 
I think a lot of the current people in this hobby aren't even aware of the older pins, which is sad as the quality of pins like the DA LE100s top anything made since.

But some of us oldtimers (yeah, when did I become an oldtimer or maybe just old lol - I think when 75%+ of the people currently involved haven't been around for more than a year!) still are hunting for some older pieces but they are harder to find because so many people who have them simply left the community and took their pins with them. :/
 

This is it exactly. As a collector I would always rather have older DA pins over any of the new stuff. It is getting so hard to find anybody getting rid of any of the old stuff. Even if money is no object, you can't find the older stuff to buy. There will always be people selling the new stuff at inflated prices.

Given the counterfeiting/overruns situation, I prefer to collect the old stuff as well. Plus, the older stuff is more tied to vacation memories for me. So I'm always looking for old stuff, but with so many themes out there, and already having so many pins, it's hard to find people with stuff that I would like, as opposed to already owning or not being the right theme.

Most of the pins that I want badly are actually old LEs that I cannot find, either because they are not popular characters, or the ones I do find are in a damaged state that is not worth the price to me. There's also the problem of being new to the hobby, so I am unfamiliar with what pins that I like have been commonly scrapped/counterfeited or not in the past. It's hard to know without seeing good photos of both a real and a fake to compare, and again, with less popular pins it's difficult to find information on them.

Because of this, I feel "safer" when I buy new releases. If I get them from pre-order pickups and such, I am pretty confident that they are authentic and new. Anything old could have so many problems that I don't know about. I do try my best to be smart about making purchase decisions on old pins, but even when I do all of the usual checks, I still feel unsure sometimes, and it's very irritating to my anxiety and OCD.

So I would have to say that I desire old pins way more than new ones, I just feel "safer" buying the new ones.
 
I'm with Ninpin and MaidMarian. I am brand new to pin collecting, but I do not feel "safe" buying older pins from eBay. If I order directly from Disney or from someone doing a pick up of new releases at Disney, I feel I am more likely to get a real pin instead of a scrapper or fake. I love the old pins and really wish I hadn't missed out, but I don't want to risk ending up with tons of scrappers in my collection.
 
As someone who came into the pin collecting world relatively late I covet the older pins. Especially the DA ones. I am trying to collect every Jiminy Cricket pin there is and it will probably take me the rest of my life. That is the fun part of collecting for me, finding an older Jiminy pin at the price I am willing to pay for it. So if you have any Jiminy pins, I am always interested.
 
I don't really get the people that hate pins with words. I don't really mind words or dates or whatever. But the older DA pins and DS.com pins were large, heavy, great art, correct color paint, etc. But I enjoy my DALE100 Tink reading just as much as my LE300 WDI Tink World of Color pin. Both are equally cool to me. But I do have to admit, the LE pins at the parks in 2014 have been seriously lame. The only ones I actually wanted to collect were the perfume bottles and I just gave up. If you can't go on Friday night or Saturday and still get a Thursday released LE2000 I'm not _that_ interested. Now all I want is the Candlelight Processional to keep that collection going, but I'm sure those will sit a while. I think last years sat until May and they probably got pulled from the shelf eventually.
 
I adore the older stuff. The problem is that I only started really hardcore collecting and trading withing the past year. The majority of my older pins are ones for my collection, since those are what I was willing or could afford to spend my money on back then. So the only pins I have available to me are the newer pins. People with the older pins generally don't want to trade them for the newer stuff; I made an offer of multiple pins on an older Robin Hood pin a few weeks back and was flatly told that they wouldn't trade an older, hard to find pin for newer pins. Another person was trading a different Robin Hood pin on Facebook and I offered things off of her wishlist; were were talking and had almost made a deal and then her communication just dropped off, and then a week later she had the same pin up in a different trade post. I understand where they are coming from but it's a bit discouraging to try and go for older pins when all you can get are newer ones.

Take Robin Hood for example. The majority of my collection is PTDs, and the "older" (released just a few years ago) pins I have I had to buy because I didn't have anything people wanted for them or the only people who had them available were selling only. The older stuff seems unobtainable unless I purchase, which is also difficult because Robin Hood seems to have become one of the "new big things" and all the older stuff is going for $100 or more each pin.

I could save up and buy the pins I want off of the bay, but I much prefer trading. I lose interest in the hobby if all I am doing is buying. So I go to DSF and get PTDs and release pins and trade for other newer pins, because then at least I have pins people want and can do *some* trading.

I don't mean for this post to be whiny or boo-hoo me, just explaining that it's hard for newer collectors who appreciate the older pins.

With all that being said, I'd be interested to see what you have for offer, especially if you have any Lion King, Robin Hood, Daisy, or Clarabelle pins.
 
I will buy old pins, it just takes me a lot longer to decide and causes a lot more angst for me than scheduling a pick-up. The old pins are what I want, mainly for the reason MMiano stated, but as I'm learning I do tend to buy more new pins. I tried to find out which pins in my main theme were known to have counterfeits or scrappers, but didn't make much headway.

Also, I'd vastly prefer trading to buying, but I have very few decent traders and few chances to get together with other pin collectors.

Timeerkat, I find that I have the exact opposite reaction from people. When I try to trade for a
popular DSF pin, no one wants my "old" pins. I understand the whole Robin Hood situation. I
love that movie and it is very difficult to get pins from it.
 
I have the feeling Mark thought you meant pre-ordering DSF pins, like when someone posts on Facebook saying "I'm going to Friday's release, $150 for the set paid up front!" rather than Speezard's DLR pickup thread.
