After seeing a few similar threads, I thought of a possible idea for a new form of trading here on DPF…

It is called a Grail Chain, where more than 2 parties work together to make a trade successful and help another find their grail…

This may be confusing at first, but if it catches on… it would become as normal as any other trade request…

Here is how I envision it could work…

A Member looking for one specific pin would start a new chain trade thread asking for this pin to be found…

Another member who has the requested pin for trade would then post that they would be willing to trade that specific pin for one of the following pins… They would then list pins they would accept for the pin needed for that link of the chain…

This continues until the member starting the thread is able to make a trade agreement with the last posted link on their chain… Thus closing the trade loop and everyone can send their pins…

Of course there are immediate questions popping up in your heads… mine too… But with a resourceful member starting the thread who truly wants one specific pin, this could be possible…

First concern would have to be with time limits… As anyone committing a specific pin into a chain may not want to wait too long for the chain to end, I believe there should be a Maximum time allotted for the starting member to complete the attempted chain… I would feel that 7 Days should be a fair time limit as it is enough time for the thread to be seen by all and enough time for the starting member to get things linked up…

Next concern would be reliability of all linked members… As any single link can ruin a chain, it would benefit the starting thread member to work hard to close the thread as soon as possible to avoid a trading headache…

Another concern would be with what link the thread is on and what is needed to complete the chain… This would require the ability to edit the original post to show all current links in the chain and what is needed for the next link… If the member starting the thread continuously edits their original post, then it would be easy to go from one chain to the next and see what chain you may be able to help on… Please edit original post rather than re-posting as then it would be a pain for others otherwise…

To avoid this from also overwhelming the boards as my Trade Auctions and my Game Ideas have done in the past, I would ask the no member ever attempt more than one chain at any given time…

For now I would post it in the Pins Wanted Sub-Forum with the Title “Wanted - Grail Chainâ€, so others know to check often to see if they could help with the current link needed…

As with other ideas in the past, if this catches on, it could be its own stand alone sub-forum where we can work on solely finding our grails and helping others find theirs…

I am curious to hear your thoughts on this idea and whether we should come up with some guidelines in addition to those mentioned above that would help make this idea work… If you guys like the idea, I will begin my first one later today…

This sounds cool! I'll have to read your post a few more times, just to make sure I've got it right, but it sounds very good! So, say if someone *cough* *cough* Marissa*cough* *cough* has I don't know 29 pins for trade on my wants list and a bunch of them are grails, she would post whatever she wants for said pin(s) and someone else who has them will trade them to me, to trade them to her? Is that right? :dunno:

i think this is a great idea! we have lots of pins, ( a few ones to a worthy level) but finding it hard to obtain for pins we want. i would happily start a chain!

I think this is a great idea as I said above, but in the intial posting, the wanted "grail" should be listed. Bottom line is if there is nobody that has the grail for trade on these boards, the thread will die quickly.

I agree, which is why I tried my first one with a pin a few members have as a trader... Not a super hard pin to find, but still very much a grail to me...

thinking about doing this for myself but im beggining to think that my grail on trades list is a myth xD I hope you both get yours, I will help where I can.

I have one suggestion for consideration: members should only post in the thread if they are offering to be the next link in the chain - otherwise it might become unwieldy.

I really like this idea. People seem to have have similar ideas on mind when searching for a pin and they would get responses like "sending out trade requests", etc. but this would be a way to work directly with people and keep all trades relating to the original request together. I like it!

took a couple times of reading it to figure this out. ((coffee hasnt kicked in yet))

So... Basically, its like a 3 way trade, but with more people?

trader A wants a pin trader D has, but trader A doesnt have anything for it. So trader D, trades with C, who trades with B, who trades with A?

like this?:coffee:
  1. trader A posts thread, "I want pin #1234"
  2. Trader D says "I have 1234, but you dont have anything i want."
  3. Trader C says, "I have pin #4567 that trader D wants."
  4. Trader B says, "I have pin 8901 that Trader C wants. AND trader A has 2468 that I want!"
  5. So trader D gives pin #1234 to Trader C for 4567.
  6. Then trader C gives 1234 to trader B for 8901.
  7. And finally Trader A gives Trader B 2468 for 1234.
  8. But to avoid all the shipping hassles; Trader D just ships the pin directly to trader A and everyone ships at once to eachother?

Correct me if I am wrong. But this is how it sounded in my head after I read it the 3rd time.

now... finally, one question....

Is it only going to be for grail hunting? And what qualifies a "grail" for this chain trade? Or will it be for random harder to locate pins, not just grails?

I think this is a great idea. I'm sure it will a few rounds to get used to it but like you said, it would basically become second nature.

As for Psycho Pixie's question: Personally I think a grail is the eye of the beholder. I think any pin should be allowed to be listed.

Pixie, it could also work out in a more complicated manner. Perhaps A wants a grail the B has. C has one or two pins that B wants, but it's not enough, but D has another two pins which would then be enough. A could end up sending pins to C and D, and even C and D could work out something else to make everything equitable.

Bottom line, it's a free-for-all, but as long as people are happy with what they're giving and receiving, everything is fine.
