Thoughts On Breaking Up Sets

Today, I went to the Disney Store in Times Square to look and see what pins were avaliable for purchase. All I saw was a Tinker Bell NYC pin and a set of NYC pins with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy and Donald. I was thinking about picking up the set and keeping only Goofy and Donald, trading the other 3 for pins I wanted.

What is the opinion of everyone on breaking up sets to get what they want? Is that that something collectors normally do or is that kinda taboo as most collectors try to complete sets? Or would the pins not be desirable since they came from a broken set.

I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks.

Thank you,

Mike

I think it's all up to the collector. Since some people only collect certain characters I am sure some would trade the others... on the other hand there will always be wanting to try and collect a certain full set of pins!

I wouldn't say it is taboo.

Its not taboo at all. A lot of collectors break up sets. Some collectors collect sets so they won't break them up but many collectors just collect specific characters. I break up sets all the time. I keep the one or two pins I like and trade the rest. The only sets I haven't broken up/won't break up are my Snow White sets since Snow White is my main collection.

If you dont like all the pins in the set, I recommend breaking it up and just keeping the ones you like.

I didn't like the thought of breaking up sets. Then this happened: Someone offered a Lion King Beloved Tales for my Designer Ursula and I passed cause it was the only one I had and it was part of my never opened Designer Villains set. I thought I'd be keeping it forever, until I needed money to buy a grail. I sold them all individually at prices I felt were below market value, just to watch the Lion King Beloved Tales sky rocket into gold. Biggest regret ever in the pin trading world so now I don't care if I break up a set. If I want something and a pin from a set can get it, I will gladly do so!

I have been trading for a pretty long time. I have always traded my pins like stocks. Sale/Trade away when their value is high. Buy/Trade for when their value is low. Mostly I have been successful. The problem is, like stocks it's all speculation. I have sold/ traded away some pins only to see them skyrocket. Other pins I have waited patiently for as long as ten years and eventually acquired them for very reasonable prices. So, yes I have split up sets when certain pins values are high, and then waited patiently for my chance to acquire them again at a deal.

I'm still struggling with the idea of a Disney Store that sells pins. My local one certainly doesn't. Anyway, I am a completionist, so I don't often break up sets. On the rare occasion that a pin is really not to my taste, I have no problem breaking up sets.

I would think it would be much easier to trade pins if you broke them up. Like some others already mentioned, a lot of people only want certain characters. And even if I like the character, I may just not like the look of that particular pin. I'm not a completist though, so I might not be the best one to answer.

I break up sets all the time. However, there are some sets I will not break up, either due to extreme rarity (LE 10-25 and even then its iffy) or if its a nice themed set that everything matches, ie a set of all the same movie or character. If its a mix of different characters that different people like, the faster I break it up.

Exactly the way it should be. If you don't really want a pin/pins and they are part of a set that you acquire, why not dispose of them for pins you really want? Keep what you like, not what you feel you should just because they're "part of a set". If you find you like the set enough, then fine, keep it, but if they mean nothing to you, why keep them? Especially if they have value to others who would like them and cannot get them. Take advantage of the opportunity to get something you would like instead.

I only collect hercules so would break up a set and keep the herc pins. not sure how I feel about framed sets, I dont think I could make myself buy one and split it but if there was a herc pin I would trade for a split one no problem.

I'll echo what most people are saying here. I like to have complete sets, but would have no reservations about breaking up sets if it means getting pins I really want!
