Hope you all know that this is really serious and WILL wreck your pins. PLEASE don't take this lightly. I am talking from experience and don't want the same thing to happen to you.

well, if you think about how those pin backs work, it's pretty obvious they would cause damage. the part you tighten is on the side, midway down the post. when you tighten something like this with a wrench, you are forcing a column inside to push against the thing you are tightening it to. we should all know how easy pin posts are to bend, so when you imagine holding your pin back and pushing a metal bar into the middle of it super hard, it just makes sense that it would bend it.

but, of course, that's only if you think about the mechanics. normally, you wouldn't expect a product to cause damage doing what it was designed to do. talk about a design flaw...

They do work the problem that most people tighten it till it won't move that's what damages the pin, it's only supposed to be a snug fit not a tight fit.

I hear you BUT even slight tightening leaves a mark AND if you tighten too loose it will come off and people generally over tighten things anyway. So why take the chance. Good input though, thanks. Oh and if for some reason you put the pins down somewhere, like on a lanyard,the length of the pin back is long and can sometimes bend the pin.

I so agree with you and if it's a very valuable pin, why take the chance.

I have some and boy do they hold the pins in place hard as anything to get them off but don't wreck the backs

i don't think many still use these much, i have noticed only new traders buy these since we mostly all use the plunger style backs, just an observation.

I recently bought the hat backs for my pins and I love them!! thanks for the heads up. I was just using regular Mickey head rubber backs, but those fall off quite easily. now I have enough hat backs for two lanyards and I feel safe!

I always find a good soft rubber mickey head back and I push the pin post throught the solid rubber and make my own new hole. My pins never fall off and I check them everytime before I wear each lanyard. If one of the backs is feeling hard, like it's dying out, I just grab a new softer rubber back and redo.

WOWEE....Thanks for posting this WARNING thread. I have heard, from more then one person, as a matter of FACT, from a CM at DLR, that guests have come in and complained that the wrench/lock pin backs have broken off the pin.

I have purchased the silver push on pin backs from a seller on eBay. They do seem to be reliable.

After reading this, I will be changing all the pin backs on my lanyards now. Thanks again for posting this thread, and to all who replied.
