I just returned today from a week long trip to WDW. I was a little disappointed by the amount of cast members who DIDN'T have pin lanyards on!!! Even some managers didn't have them!! I understand some of the roles don't call for the cast member who wear a pin lanyard, but merchandise cast, character attendants, janitors, etc. didn't have lanyards...anyone else notice this lately? :rant: :down:
 
It was about 50/50 on my days there
But I did have a great pin day at the Magic Kingdom, just about every CM there had pins
 
I noticed last time we were there we said the same thing. when we asked different cast members they all had different reasons why they did not have them.
 
WDW CMs are not required to wear lanyards, although probably more than half in merchandising do. Not all managers wear lanyards either. Many of the custodial staff wear lanyards and often have some of the best pins for trade as most guests will not even notice their lanyards or approach them even if they do notice.
 
CM's that work "safety critical" rides are not allowed to wear pin lanyards when they are in "safety critical" positions. When the CM gets bumped to a position that is permits pin trading, they normally do not have time to go get their pin lanyard from their locker, book bag, etc.
 
I was at WDW at Christmas and that's where we got into pin trading; it seemed like there were TONS of CMs with lanyards there. (Though my friend is extra-good at spotting them.) We spent more time in Hollywood Studios than anywhere else, if that makes a difference. By contrast there seemed to be fewer CMs pin trading at DLR this past Memorial Day weekend.
 
Custodians =/= Janitors

During very hot summer months a lot of the outdoors CMs don't wear lanyards because it cause you to become hotter faster. (the way custodial shirts are the lanyard cuts off air flow and such). the more you wear the hotter it is you know? Alot of them will carry them in their little hip bags. Custodians also aren't given the choice of a lanyard or hip thing, they are given lanyards and if they care enough they can buy a hip thing...

It's hard to say but I know more people wear them in the mornings and take them off as the day progresses.

Sometimes it helps if you ask them if they might have their with them too. A lot of them will...
 
DLR was pretty similar last month I went, but it really depends where you are; for example, in mainstreet there are more cms with lanyards than at toontown. In addition, the time of day. We should create a petition!
 

I found most of my Stitch pins at Hollywood Studios, a few at Magic Kingdom, maybe 2 at Animal Kingdom, and I don't recall if I found any at Epcot or not
 
Were spent 11 days at WDW at the beginning of June and there were plenty of lanyards around. My son traded about 50 pins/day - he spent most of his time between rides checking out every cast member for pins. There seemed to be a lot of hip lanyards around and they are harder to see. My son has been trading for 8 years and it seems that his pin 'hit rate' has been the same for the last 2-3 years; overall, probably 60% of cast members (in non-food, non-safety critical roles) had pins.
 
Yeah WDW isn't the best about pin trading. even when you find a CM with pins a lot of the time if is clearly a fake pin. So sad =(
 
Alas I've never been to WDW, but when I still lived in LA and went to DLR all of the time they were horrible about wearing lanyards and in some cases rude about sharing. I would say I've never seen more than 25% wore lanyards at the most, many times less than that. Sometimes the ones behind the counter don't wear them and keep them in a drawer so I always ask, but it seems as if for a lot of them wearing lanyards and trading has become a chore to them. I guess with so many sharks just waiting to go in for the kill every time they get new pins it takes some of the fun out of it.
 
I was just really pumped to trade pins with CMs because, although they typically have the same "booster set" pins on their lanyard, occasionally they have some really cool pins I've never seen before. I wish the rule for CMs having to wear lanyards was enforced more because it IS considered part of their "costume"
 
As someone who goes to WDW quite often (usually bi monthly, sometimes more), I would say the CMs wearing lanyards fluctuates. When it's crowded, they tend to hide their lanyards, for obvious reasons, they are busy. Pin traders need to remember the CMs job is not only to trade pins, matter of fact, that's at the bottom of the list.

Plus, being nice/polite, following the rules, waiting in line when they are busy, goes a long way. You'd be amazed how many lanyards will show up, if one is kind and considerate.
