What art should I auction?

I'm going to start an auction - eventually - for my artwork and have a few questions? Do you like to see the actual artwork? That is - should I already have a painting? Or should it be a "custom" artwork that you tell me what you like?

I am thinking about auctioning either 3" x 3" squares or maybe 8" x 8" - something that would be easier to ship than a 16 x 20. :drool:

She was thinking that, but now onto the size - 3" x 3" (nice square), 8" x 8", or 8 x 10" - it will be acrylic on canvas, of course.

I'm thinking the bigger the painting, the better the bids, but of course this is just a guess.

And I second what disneycrazee said - Offering a custom piece of artwork will probably interest more members.

As an art collector, 3x3 is incredibly small. Do you only use square canvases? 8x10 and 4x6 are great sizes. I think custom is better, but make absolutely sure that the bidders are familiar with your style, since they won't be seeing the piece until after the auction/trade you wouldn't want someone coming back and backing out because they felt like what they got wasn't what they wanted. Perhaps an auction format is better for a piece that is completed and an open trade for a custom piece. If you're worried about excluding certain collectors because of the subject matter, than paint something that is popular like Rapunzel, and Brave is still pretty hot or Haunted Mansion. Just my 2, or maybe 3 cents.

Thanks Ruby for your insight. My art, thus far, has been limited to 16 x 20. But I know that is sometimes difficult to frame and I know it's difficult to ship (sis hasn't yet found me a box to ship a 16 x 20), so I was thinking of going smaller. But maybe not too small. I can probably ship an 8 x 10 and a 4 x 6 fairly easily.

My favorite subject to paint is Belle, but I think I should be able to paint Rapunzel. You have given me some interesting ideas and I thank you for it!
